Chapter 13 - The DNA Envelope)

Corinne agreed to DNA testing.
Not because Ethan asked.
Because she needed to know.
Results came through expedited forensic comparison using preserved biological material from Martin Vale's medical records.
Martin Vale was not Corinne's biological father.
Corinne sat alone when prosecutors told her.
Ethan watched through glass.
She did not cry.
She simply stared at the wall for nearly ten minutes.
The next comparison was more disturbing.
Daniel Mercer was not her father either.
Neither was any known Mercer relative.
Marcus returned to Claire's notebook.
Arthur Vale.
Public records showed Arthur had one recognized son.
Martin.
But old correspondence suggested another child.
A son born outside his marriage.
Name unknown.
Possibly raised elsewhere.
Claire had underlined one sentence three times.
Find Robert.
Marcus searched births connected to Arthur's known movements.
They found Robert Haines.
Born sixty years earlier.
Adopted.
No public connection to the Vale family.
Current address?
Unknown.
Last confirmed employment?
Vehicle electronics engineer.
Ethan felt the room go cold.
"What kind of vehicle electronics?"
Marcus read.
"Remote diagnostics. Fleet systems. Electronic braking controls."
Claire's car.
Samuel whispered, "Find him."
They did.
Robert Haines had died twelve years earlier.
But he had one son.
Julian Haines.
Forty-one.
Current occupation?
Automotive cybersecurity consultant.
Ethan stood.
"Where is he?"
Marcus turned his laptop.
Julian Haines lived forty minutes away.
Police went to the address.
Empty.
Neighbors had not seen him in days.
His phone was disconnected.
His bank accounts had been cleared.
Marcus brought up a driver's-license photograph.
Ethan stared.
He had seen the man before.
Not in Claire's files.
At Claire's funeral.
A man standing beneath a tree across from the cemetery.
Ethan remembered him because he had been the only person not carrying an umbrella.
"What does this mean?" Rachel asked.
Marcus spoke slowly.
"If Robert Haines was Arthur Vale's son, Julian is Arthur's grandson."
"Making him a Vale heir."
"Yes."
"And Corinne?"
"We still don't know her father."
They received the answer from the most unexpected source.
Maisie's pediatrician called Ethan.
An old envelope had been delivered to the office months earlier with instructions to give it to Ethan if anyone ever requested unusual custody documentation.
Claire had left it.
Inside was a sealed DNA report.
Claire had tested Corinne's hair against a sample obtained from Daniel Mercer.
No match beyond ordinary population probability.
She had also tested Corinne against preserved material from Arthur Vale contained in an archived medical collection.
The probability of a direct grandparent relationship was extremely high.
Corinne was Arthur Vale's granddaughter.
But not through Martin.
Meaning Arthur had another son.
Possibly Robert Haines.
The lab compared newly obtained Corinne DNA with a surviving medical sample from Robert.
The result was definitive.
Robert Haines was Corinne's biological father.
Corinne and Julian Haines were half-siblings.
Everything changed.
Daniel had not manipulated a distant niece.
He had manipulated an heiress whose identity had been hidden.
Why?
Samuel found the answer in the original Shaw Vale charter.
If a direct Vale descendant and a direct Shaw descendant jointly authorized dissolution, dormant assets worth hundreds of millions could be transferred.
Corinne represented the Vale line.
Maisie represented the Shaw line.
Daniel needed control over both.
He had Corinne emotionally.
He had attempted to gain legal control over Maisie through guardianship.
Ethan finally understood the architecture of the plan.
But Claire had discovered it.
So Claire became dangerous.
The question remained whether Daniel had killed her.
Then police found Julian Haines.
Not alive.
He had been discovered unconscious in a rented storage facility, dehydrated and injured but breathing.
At the hospital, Julian asked for one person.
Ethan.
The room was guarded when Ethan entered.
Julian looked weak.
"Claire's husband."
"Ethan."
Julian nodded.
"She told me you might come."
"You knew Claire?"
"She found me."
"When?"
"Two weeks before she died."
Ethan pulled a chair closer.
"What did she want?"
"To know about Daniel."
"Why you?"
"Because I worked for him."
Ethan's stomach tightened.
"On her car?"
Julian closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Ethan stood so fast the chair nearly fell.
"You sabotaged it."
"No."
"Don't lie to me."
"I installed a diagnostic module."
"Why?"
"Daniel said he was monitoring a corporate vehicle."
"It was my wife's car."
"I didn't know until later."
"What could the module do?"
"Read systems. Location. Speed. Some limited electronic commands."
"Brakes?"
Julian did not answer.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Could it affect the brakes?"
"Indirectly."
Ethan's voice shook.
"Did Daniel use it?"
"I don't know."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"Claire came to me because she found the module."
Ethan froze.
"What?"
"She knew someone was tracking her."
"Then why did she keep driving?"
"She had it disabled."
Ethan stared.
Julian opened his eyes.
"The module wasn't active when she crashed."
Silence filled the room.
"Then what caused the crash?"
Julian whispered, "That's why Daniel kidnapped me."
"Why?"
"Because I found the vehicle logs."
Ethan leaned closer.
"What did they show?"
Julian looked toward the guarded door.
Then back at Ethan.
"Claire's brakes worked."
"What?"
"Her steering worked."
"Then why did she leave the road?"
May you like
Julian swallowed.
"Because another car hit her."
