THE CABIN WASN’T EMPTY / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The Room Beneath the Stairs

The confrontation at the cabin lasted less than ten minutes.

It changed everything.

Bradley stood on the porch with Martin Sloane while a second vehicle waited near the road. He demanded the deed. Martin claimed the documents inside the steel compartment belonged to Helen’s estate.

Eugene refused to open the door.

Carol revealed the hidden property record naming Alden Vale as the former owner of Villa Belladonna.

Then she showed Eugene the photograph dated eleven months earlier.

Alden appeared to be alive.

Bradley saw the photograph through the glass.

For the first time, genuine shock broke through his controlled expression.

“Where did you get that?” he demanded.

Eugene held it closer to the window.

“You recognize him.”

“No.”

“You didn’t even look at his face.”

Martin touched Bradley’s arm.

It was a small movement, but Eugene understood the warning.

Stop talking.

Carol placed the old ledgers beneath the groceries and retrieved the brass key.

A message appeared on the prepaid phone.

Luca Ferri had written only three words.

USE THE BOATHOUSE EXIT.

Carol led Eugene toward the back room.

Behind a shelf filled with blankets was a narrow door opening onto wooden steps. The passage descended beneath the cabin and continued toward the shore.

“Helen built this?” Eugene asked.

“It was already here. Smugglers used parts of this coast during Prohibition.”

They emerged inside an abandoned boathouse hidden below the cliff.

Carol moved steadily with her crutches while Eugene carried the grocery bag containing the documents. They crossed a short dock to a small paved lot on the opposite side of the inlet.

A black sedan waited there.

Luca Ferri sat behind the wheel.

He was a thin man in his sixties with silver hair and tired eyes.

“You brought the key?” he asked.

Carol held it up.

Luca drove them to a private airfield two hours away.

Helen had prepared everything.

Three tickets to Milan waited under false reservation numbers. A legal packet in Eugene’s name authorized him to challenge the villa sale as a beneficiary of Margaret Vale’s trust.

“You knew about my mother?” Eugene asked Luca.

“I met her once.”

“When?”

“1988.”

Twenty years after Alden disappeared.

“Was my father with her?”

Luca looked at him through the mirror.

“No.”

“Was he alive?”

Luca did not answer.

Eugene leaned forward.

“I am done accepting silence as protection.”

Luca tightened his hands on the steering wheel.

“Yes. Alden was alive in 1988.”

“Where?”

“At Villa Belladonna.”

Carol turned toward Luca.

“You told Helen you never met him.”

“Helen knew that was not true.”

“Why lie to her?”

“Because Alden asked me to.”

Eugene felt anger rise again.

“Everyone seems very loyal to a man who abandoned his family.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

“You think he stayed away because he wanted another life?”

“What else am I supposed to think?”

“That Victor Kessler threatened to kill you if Alden returned.”

The sedan became silent.

Luca explained that Alden survived the attempt to remove him from Belladonna Holdings. He spent years collecting evidence while living under false identities.

Margaret agreed to hide the truth from Eugene.

Alden intended to return once Victor was exposed.

But Victor discovered the investigation.

“He sent Alden a photograph of you walking home from school,” Luca said. “The message was clear.”

“So my father chose to disappear forever.”

“He chose for you to grow up.”

Eugene looked through the window at the dark highway.

“Where is Nicholas?”

Luca’s eyes shifted toward him.

“You know that name?”

“Helen left a photograph.”

Luca muttered something in Italian.

“Who is he?” Eugene demanded.

“A mistake Alden tried to protect.”

“My brother?”

“Not exactly.”

Before Luca could explain, his phone rang.

He answered through the car speaker.

A woman spoke rapidly in Italian.

Luca’s face changed.

“What happened?” Carol asked.

“The hotel representatives have left the villa.”

“Is the sale delayed?”

“No.”

May you like

Luca looked at Eugene.

“Bradley opened the lower vault.”
