Chapter 11 - The House of False Walls

Bradley entered the room calmly.
“I wondered how long it would take you to find this place.”
Eugene moved in front of Carol.
Martin did not raise the weapon, but its presence controlled the room.
“You opened the vault,” Eugene said.
Bradley looked at the empty shelves.
“I found what my mother wanted me to find.”
“And took it.”
“For safekeeping.”
“From whom?”
“You.”
Bradley walked to the desk.
He saw Daniel Mercer’s confession in Carol’s hands.
“So that is where she hid it.”
“You knew my father survived,” Carol said.
“I knew there was no body.”
“You threatened me because I was searching for him.”
“I offered you a job.”
“And after I refused?”
Bradley looked at her crutches.
“I had nothing to do with your accident.”
“Your mother believed otherwise.”
“My mother believed many convenient things near the end.”
Eugene removed Helen’s letter from his jacket.
“She understood you perfectly.”
Bradley’s expression tightened.
“You are embarrassing yourself for a woman who lied to you for decades.”
“She lied because she was afraid of you.”
“She was afraid of losing control.”
The words carried something deeper than anger.
Bradley had spent his life competing with the version of Helen that existed in his mind. He wanted her approval, her fortune, and proof that she had chosen him above everyone else.
The villa was supposed to provide that proof.
Instead, Helen had used his greed to expose him.
“You thought the vault contained Victor’s money,” Eugene said.
Bradley smiled faintly.
“So did my mother.”
“She knew it contained evidence.”
“Then why give it to me?”
“To make you open it.”
For the first time, Bradley glanced toward the camera above the vault door.
Martin looked sharply at him.
Bradley understood.
“You recorded us.”
“Helen recorded you,” Carol said.
Martin raised the weapon slightly.
“Where is the upload?”
“Beyond your reach.”
Martin turned to Luca.
“You should have retired when we allowed you to.”
Luca showed no fear.
“You were a better liar when you were younger.”
Martin’s face became colder.
“You signed the police report when my father disappeared,” Carol said. “You forged Margaret Vale’s transfer. You managed Helen’s estate. Every road leads back to you.”
“Every road leads to paperwork,” Martin replied. “Paperwork can be corrected.”
“Not after it becomes public.”
Bradley moved toward Carol.
“Give me the confession.”
“No.”
“You don’t know what Daniel did.”
“He protected Helen.”
“He worked for Victor before he worked for her.”
Carol froze.
Bradley continued.
“Your father built the accounting system that hid the money. He did not become a hero until Victor threatened him.”
“That doesn’t erase what Martin did.”
“No. But it should make you question the story you were given.”
Eugene realized Bradley was not simply trying to recover evidence.
He was trying to divide them.
“That’s enough,” Eugene said.
Bradley turned toward him.
“No, Eugene. You deserve the truth you keep demanding.”
He removed a folded document from his coat.
It was a medical report from the clinic where Helen had died.
“Your wife’s final appointment was not on the date you remember.”
Eugene did not take it.
“What are you talking about?”
“She visited the clinic three days after the date listed on her death certificate.”
“That is impossible.”
“Is it?”
Bradley placed the document on the desk.
The signature belonged to Helen.
Eugene recognized it immediately.
Carol examined the date.
“This could be forged.”
“Of course it could,” Bradley said. “That is the useful thing about living among liars. Every truth looks like another forgery.”
A siren sounded near the main road.
Martin glanced toward the passage.
Bradley appeared surprised.
“You called the police?” he asked.
“No,” Eugene said.
Carol looked at her prepaid phone.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
THE FILES ARE PUBLIC.
Martin’s face changed.
He raised the weapon.
Before anyone moved, Luca stepped forward and pressed a switch beneath the desk.
A steel partition dropped between Martin and the others.
The room split in two.
Martin shouted from the other side.
Bradley remained trapped with Eugene, Carol, and Luca.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
The police were coming.
May you like
The files had been released.
And Bradley no longer controlled which side of the wall protected him.
