Chapter 8 - The Boy Who Confessed

They escaped through an underground passage beneath the observatory.

Reyes discovered the entrance behind a rusted equipment cabinet, exactly where her sister’s campus map indicated.

The tunnel led beneath the athletic field and emerged inside an abandoned boiler room.

Daniel, Reyes, Connor, and Bryce moved through darkness while footsteps echoed behind them.

Mason was gone.

The shooter remained somewhere above.

Reyes guided them through the service passages until they reached a locked door beneath the library.

Connor knew the access code.

317.

The same number as Reyes’s storage locker.

She stared at him.

“What does that number mean?”

Connor hesitated.

“The seventeenth of March. Founders’ Day.”

Reyes thought of her sister.

“She chose that locker because of the Order.”

“She wanted someone to recognize it.”

Beyond the door was a narrow archive room.

Shelves held old university records, security tapes, medical folders, and sealed disciplinary files.

Daniel moved his flashlight across the labels.

Most files contained only identification numbers.

Bryce sat on the floor, breathing hard.

“They are going to kill us.”

Connor looked at him.

“You should have thought about that before you told everyone she pulled away.”

“You were the one who confessed.”

“I was the one holding a gun I never wanted.”

Bryce laughed bitterly.

“You think that makes you innocent?”

“No.”

Connor looked toward Daniel.

“I am not innocent.”

It was the first honest thing Daniel had heard from him.

Reyes found an emergency telephone mounted on the wall. The line was dead.

Her personal phone showed no signal.

Daniel checked his watch.

Lily had been out of surgery for nearly two hours.

He needed to return to the hospital.

Connor noticed the urgency in his face.

“There is another exit. The tunnel reaches the medical research center across the street.”

“How do you know?” Reyes asked.

“We used the tunnels during initiation.”

“Into the Order?”

Connor nodded.

Bryce whispered, “Stop telling them things.”

Connor turned on him.

“They left us in that building to die.”

“My father will fix this.”

“Your father sent the shooter.”

Bryce stood.

“You do not know that.”

“Who else knew where we were?”

“Mason.”

Reyes examined both of them.

“Mason called Daniel. Mason selected the observatory. Mason fled before the shooting.”

Connor’s face changed.

“He arranged it.”

“To eliminate witnesses,” Daniel said.

Bryce shook his head.

“Mason is my friend.”

“He dropped Lily’s apology letter on the hospital floor while she was dying,” Daniel replied. “Does that sound like a loyal person?”

Bryce said nothing.

Reyes began opening archive boxes.

“Help me find anything connected to the Black Ledger.”

For twenty minutes, they searched.

Daniel found surveillance photographs of students entering counseling offices, dormitories, clinics, and private homes.

Reyes found payment receipts from the Hale Foundation to families whose children had withdrawn from Westbridge.

Connor uncovered a list of Correction candidates.

Lily’s name appeared at the bottom.

Beside it were two instructions.

RECOVER LEDGER ACCESS.

ASSESS FOR RECRUITMENT.

Daniel read the line again.

“They wanted to recruit her.”

Connor nodded.

“She was brilliant. Top of her class. No criminal history. No wealthy relatives. No one important enough to protect her.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“She had me.”

Connor looked away.

Bryce found a small cassette tape inside a file labeled BELL, AARON.

There was no player in the room.

Daniel placed the tape in his pocket.

Reyes discovered a digital access terminal beneath a cloth. The computer was connected to an internal university network.

Connor entered his family credentials.

The screen displayed four pillars.

HALE.

CROSS.

VALE.

The fourth was blank.

A password field appeared beneath it.

Connor tried several codes.

Access denied.

Bryce tried his father’s birthday.

Denied.

Daniel remembered Lily’s finger tracing the symbol in his palm.

Two lines.

A circle.

Perhaps she had not been drawing the Founders’ Seal.

Perhaps she had been drawing a pause symbol inside a recording icon.

Two lines inside a circle.

He removed the old voice recorder’s spare memory card from his wallet. Before leaving the train station, he had copied the audio file to it.

Beside the password field was a memory-card slot.

Daniel inserted it.

The system analyzed the recording.

When the fourth voice said, “Take her to the stairwell,” the screen changed.

VOICEPRINT ACCEPTED.

Connor stepped back.

“My grandfather’s voice is the password.”

The fourth pillar gained a name.

WARD.

Daniel stared at it.

Not Vale.

Not an unknown family.

Ward.

The trauma surgeon treating Lily.

The screen opened a directory containing thousands of records.

At the top was a live security feed from the hospital.

Lily lay in bed.

Dr. Ward stood beside her.

Hospital Administrator Pike entered the room carrying a syringe.

Daniel’s blood went cold.

Pike locked the door.

May you like

Ward turned toward the camera.

Then he reached up and disconnected it.
