Chapter 14 - The Dead Sister
“Nina,” Reyes whispered.
Her sister looked older than the photograph in Reyes’s wallet, but there was no doubt.
The same dark eyes.
The same small scar near her chin.
The same silver pendant around her neck.
Reyes lowered her weapon by an inch.
“You are alive.”
Nina Reyes looked at Mason.
“Put the gun down.”
Mason aimed at Daniel.
“You told me the Mercy Option was a myth.”
“It was.”
“The upload reached ninety-seven percent.”
“Which is why your role is finished.”
Mason turned toward her.
Confusion crossed his face.
Nina fired once.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
Mason dropped the pistol.
Reyes kicked it away and forced him to the ground.
Daniel looked at Nina.
“You sent the warning through Lily’s ventilator.”
“Yes.”
“You photographed me in the hospital.”
“Yes.”
“You admitted Lily under Maria Bell’s name.”
Nina nodded.
“Maria helped me enter the hospital. She is alive.”
“Why not come to us directly?”
“Because I did not know who had already been compromised.”
Reyes stared at her sister.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
Nina’s expression broke for the first time.
“I was given the same choice as Aaron. Serve or disappear. I chose to serve long enough to find the Guardian.”
“Gabriel Voss?”
“No.”
Daniel looked toward Mason.
“Then who?”
Nina glanced at Dr. Ward.
“The Guardian is not a single person. Gabriel created a distributed identity. Anyone with access to the fourth voice could issue orders while appearing to speak for the Guardian.”
“The voice changer,” Daniel said.
“Gabriel wanted every family to believe someone else controlled him. He turned the Order into a machine without a visible leader.”
Ward examined the upload screen.
“What happened to the final three percent?”
Nina approached the terminal.
“The Ledger separated it.”
“Why?”
“Because those records relate to operations still active.”
Reyes stepped closer to her sister.
“Who are the targets?”
Nina entered a code.
A list appeared.
Lily Mercer’s name was first.
Daniel Mercer was second.
Dr. Elias Ward.
Sofia Reyes.
Connor Vale.
Bryce Hale.
Thousands of additional names followed.
“They are not targets,” Nina said. “They are candidates.”
“For what?” Daniel asked.
“A replacement network.”
Mason laughed from the floor.
Blood spread across his sleeve.
“You still do not understand.”
Reyes tightened the restraints around his wrists.
“Explain.”
“The Order was never about the university.”
“We know,” Daniel said.
“It was not about the families either.”
“We know that too.”
Mason smiled through the pain.
“It was a test.”
The chamber fell silent.
“A test for whom?” Ward asked.
“For governments, corporations, courts, hospitals, universities. The Ledger measured how easily institutions could be controlled through shame, money, fear, and loyalty.”
Daniel looked at the remaining records.
“Who was measuring them?”
Mason’s smile widened.
“The people who built the first system.”
Nina raised her weapon.
“Do not listen to him.”
“He knows,” Mason said. “That is why she shot me before I could tell you.”
Reyes moved between them.
“Nina?”
Her sister looked toward the server core.
“The Mercy release transmitted enough evidence to break the three families. Senator Hale, Malcolm Cross, Nathaniel Vale, Voss, Pike, Denning, and dozens of others will face prosecution.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Nina’s eyes filled with something Reyes had not expected.
Fear.
“I do not know who built the original network.”
“Then why stop him from speaking?”
“Because Gabriel warned that certain names activate dormant protocols.”
Daniel remembered the courtroom voice from the future he had not yet reached.
Do not let her play the final minute.
“What kind of protocols?”
“Assassinations. Financial collapses. Evidence releases. Automated commands hidden inside systems around the world.”
Ward looked at the frozen upload.
“The remaining three percent.”
Nina nodded.
“If opened incorrectly, it does not expose the final operators. It alerts them.”
A phone vibrated inside Mason’s coat.
Reyes removed it.
The screen showed a live video feed.
Lily’s medical transport vehicle stood abandoned beneath a highway bridge.
The rear doors were open.
The guards lay unconscious on the road.
Daniel grabbed the phone.
Lily’s wheelchair was empty.
A message appeared.
THE HEIR HAS BEEN RECEIVED.
Daniel seized Mason by the collar.
“Where is she?”
Mason looked genuinely surprised.
“I do not know.”
“You arranged this.”
“No.”
The phone displayed another image.
Lily awake inside a moving vehicle.
Beside her sat Gabriel Voss.
His face was pale and narrow, with dark hair and a burn scar across one cheek.
He leaned toward the camera.
“The Mercy Option was a beautiful idea,” Gabriel said. “Your wife always believed truth could be controlled.”
Daniel’s hands shook.
“Where are you taking her?”
Gabriel smiled.

The feed ended.
