Chapter 8 - Diane’s Final Bargain

Two days later, Diane appeared at Caroline’s new apartment.
Caroline had moved into a quiet building near the harbor. There were still boxes stacked against the walls and only one chair in the living room.
Diane remained standing.
“You have destroyed Marcus.”
“No. Evidence exposed Marcus.”
“He may lose his position.”
“He may face consequences.”
Diane placed her handbag on a box.
“What do you want?”
Caroline almost laughed.
For years, Diane had insisted Caroline wanted too much. Now she assumed every act had a price.
“I want you to leave.”
“I can convince him to accept the divorce quietly.”
“The divorce is already final.”
“I can return some of the money.”
“All of it will be reviewed by investigators.”
Diane stepped closer.
“You were nothing before this family.”
Caroline met her eyes.
“I had a career, a father who loved me, and a home in my own name.”
“You abandoned your career willingly.”
“No. Marcus asked me to prove I loved him. Every sacrifice became proof, and every proof became a new requirement.”
Diane’s confidence began to crack.
Caroline walked to the door and opened it.
“You taught him that women exist to protect men from consequences. You taught him that silence was loyalty. You taught me that I would never earn your respect.”
She paused.
“Thank you.”
Diane stared at her.
“For what?”
“For making me stop trying.”
Diane left without another word.
Three months later, investigators recovered most of the missing charitable funds. The consulting company was shut down. Marcus was removed from his administrative position while the case proceeded.

Diane sold her house to repay money traced to false event expenses.
For the first time in her life, she could not point at someone else and command them to carry the blame.
