Chapter 6 - What Happened After Caroline Walked Away

The beach remained silent for several seconds after Caroline’s announcement.
Then Marcus rushed after her.
“Caroline, stop.”
She continued across the sand.
He caught up near the line of palm trees but did not touch her. Several uniformed officers had turned to watch him.
“You planned this,” he said.
Caroline faced him.
“No. I responded to what you planned.”
“This is my career.”
“You used my signature.”
“I was building something for us.”
“You were building it for Priscilla.”
Marcus glanced toward the canopy. Priscilla stood beside two members of her organization’s legal team. Diane was trying to speak to her, but Priscilla had turned away.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“We can fix this privately.”
“That is what you always said.”
His phone vibrated again.
This time the message came from the base legal office requesting his presence for an immediate administrative review.
Marcus looked frightened.
Caroline had rarely seen him frightened. Angry, disappointed, offended, cold, yes. But never frightened.
“What did you give them?”
“The truth.”
Diane came running across the sand, lifting the hem of her gown.
“How could you do this to your husband in front of everyone?”
Caroline looked at her calmly.
“He is not my husband.”
“You think a judge’s signature erases eight years?”
“No,” Caroline said. “But it ends the ninth.”
Diane’s face twisted.
“You owe this family.”
Caroline turned toward the gathered guests.
“No. This family owes veterans, donors, and every person whose trust you treated like your private account.”
The words carried across the beach.
Guests began taking out their phones.
Diane suddenly understood that the humiliation she had prepared for Caroline had reversed direction.

She had demanded an audience.
Now she had one.
