Chapter 13 - The Daughter Celeste Chose

The hidden vault opened.
Margaret stepped into the outer chamber as the countdown reached eight minutes.
Celeste turned the pistol toward her.
“Where were you?”
“Listening to Arthur.”
Natalie, the original, stood free from the chair now. The chain hung from one wrist. The bullet had barely touched her shoulder. She held the purge device.
The bride, Nora living as Natalie, faced Celeste with blood on her white gown.
Adrian stood between them.
“Nora,” Margaret said.
Both women turned.
That alone revealed the damage Bellweather had done. Each had answered to the name.
Margaret looked at the bride.
“You are Nora.”
Her eyes filled.
Adrian whispered, “Is that true?”
Nora looked at him.
“Yes.”
The word broke something in his face.
“Was anything real?”
“My name was not.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Nora’s breath trembled.
“My love was.”
Original Natalie laughed.
“She studied you for years.”
Nora turned on her.
“So did you.”
Celeste raised the pistol. “Enough.”
Margaret placed the codicil beside the scanner.
“The archive purges in seven minutes. Give me the gun.”
Celeste smiled. “You still think you are negotiating.”
“No. I think you are afraid.”
For the first time, Celeste’s composure cracked.
Margaret continued. “You built your power on interchangeable girls. Now both of them are here, and neither belongs to you.”
Original Natalie’s smile disappeared.
Nora stepped closer to Celeste.
“You left me in that basement.”
“I rescued you.”
“You renamed me.”
“I gave you a life.”
“You gave me orders.”
Celeste pointed the gun at her.
“And you followed them.”
Nora looked at Adrian, then Margaret.
“Not tonight.”
She lunged.
The gun fired.
Adrian tackled Celeste sideways. Evelyn seized her wrist. Inspector Rusk, barely conscious, kicked the weapon away.
Original Natalie ran for the scanner.
Margaret blocked her.
“Move.”
“No.”
“The archive belongs to us.”
“It belongs to the people you hurt.”
Natalie’s face twisted.
“You know nothing about what happened to me.”
“I know pain does not grant ownership of other lives.”
Natalie struck her.
Margaret fell against the table. The codicil slid toward the edge.
Nora caught it.
For one suspended second, both sisters stared at the document.
Then Nora placed it in Margaret’s hand.
“Choose,” she said.
The countdown showed four minutes.
Celeste struggled beneath Evelyn and Adrian.
“Do not release it,” she shouted. “You will destroy hundreds of innocent women.”
Lydia entered the chamber.
“They can be protected through the tribunal level.”
Celeste looked at her with hatred.
“You.”
Lydia touched the scar across her throat. “You should have made certain I was dead.”
Original Natalie grabbed the purge device again.
Nora blocked her.
They fought beside the scanner, identical faces twisted with opposite intent. Adrian moved to help, but Margaret stopped him.
“This is not a fight you understand.”
“It’s my life.”
“It was their life first.”
The sisters crashed into the black table.
The codicil nearly fell again.
Two minutes.
Lydia activated the voiceprint.
Arthur’s recorded phrase filled the chamber.
When the lights fail, follow my voice.
The scanner glowed.
IDENTITY CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.
Margaret placed her hand on the biometric panel.
A second prompt appeared.
SELECT SPOUSAL IDENTITY.
NATALIE VALE
NORA VALE
UNVERIFIED
Adrian stared at Nora.
“If I choose Nora, our marriage is invalid.”
Margaret said, “Legally, yes.”
Nora’s face crumpled.
Adrian walked toward her.
“Tell me the truth without training.”
She swallowed.
“I knew your favorite song because they taught me. I knew your grief because they recorded it. I approached you because Celeste ordered me. But I stayed because you made me imagine a person I could become.”
“Did you plan to take the money?”
“At first.”
“And later?”
“I planned to use the transfer to free the survivors.”
Original Natalie laughed. “She planned to steal it for herself.”
Nora looked at her sister.
“Like you did?”
The countdown reached sixty seconds.
Margaret selected UNVERIFIED.
The system rejected it.
VALID SPOUSAL IDENTITY REQUIRED.
Adrian looked at Margaret.
“What happens if we choose Nora?”
“The marriage condition fails. The trust will not transfer.”
“And the archive?”
Lydia said, “It may still release if Arthur built an override.”
“May?”
“Ten seconds,” Evelyn warned.
Adrian took Nora’s hand.
“My legal spouse used a false identity. Select Nora.”
Margaret pressed NORA VALE.
The system flashed red.
MARRIAGE INVALID.
TRUST TRANSFER CANCELED.
The countdown reached zero.
Original Natalie smiled.
Then every light in the chamber turned white.
A new message appeared.
ETHICAL OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.
PROTECTED DISCLOSURE INITIATED.
Celeste screamed.
Data transmission bars raced across the monitors.
Names, accounts, files, and witness records began uploading to sealed judicial servers.
Margaret exhaled.
Arthur had not required a perfect wedding.
He had required the truth.
Inspector Rusk’s radio erupted with voices. Federal teams were raiding properties across three states. Judges issued emergency warrants. The Circle’s financial accounts were freezing in real time.
Original Natalie stared at the screens in disbelief.
Nora began to cry.
Adrian released her hand.
Not cruelly.
But completely.
The protected disclosure reached eighty percent.
Then one of the monitors went black.
Another followed.
Lydia rushed to the controls.
“What is happening?” Margaret asked.
“Someone outside is interrupting the tribunal route.”
“Can they erase it?”
“No.”
“Can they redirect it?”
Lydia’s face went pale.
“Yes.”
The final monitor displayed a new destination.
WHITMORE GLOBAL INTERNAL SERVER.
Margaret stared.
The archive was not going to the tribunal.
May you like
It was being sent directly into her company.
And someone inside Whitmore Global had just accepted the transfer.
