Chapter 10 - The Wedding Performance

The ceremony began under white orchids and a ceiling of crystal light.
Four hundred guests watched Adrian wait at the altar. News cameras broadcast the event as a society wedding between two powerful families.
Margaret entered alone.
Whispers followed her. Rumors about her health had already spread. Several guests looked at her wig, then quickly away.
Celeste Vale smiled from the front row.
The ceremony proceeded without interruption. Natalie walked down the aisle in ivory silk, radiant and composed. Adrian’s face softened when he saw her.
Margaret wished, for one painful moment, that everything she suspected was false.
The vows were brief.
When the officiant asked whether anyone objected, no one spoke.
Margaret did not move.
That silence surprised Celeste.
The marriage was declared.
Applause filled the ballroom.
Dinner followed. Toasts were made. Conrad praised the union of two legacies. Celeste spoke of family loyalty while looking directly at Margaret.
Then Natalie took the microphone.
“There is one person,” she said, “who never welcomed me.”
Guests shifted.
Adrian whispered her name, but Natalie raised a hand.
“Tonight I want truth. No secrets. No masks.”
A bridesmaid brought the ceremonial scissors.
Laughter moved nervously through the room.
Natalie stepped behind Margaret.
“Your illness is nothing to hide,” she said. “So why hide it?”
Adrian rose.
“Natalie, stop.”
Celeste touched his arm. “Let her make peace.”
Margaret remained seated.
Natalie cut through the wig.
The first piece fell.
Gasps.
Another cut.
Then Natalie lifted the ruined wig away, revealing Margaret’s shaved head beneath the chandeliers.
The ballroom fell silent.
Natalie laughed.
“Now you finally look like the pathetic old hag you are.”
Adrian lowered his head.
Not in shame for his mother.
In shame for himself.
Margaret stood slowly.
The cameras moved closer.
She touched her bare scalp.
“Thank you,” she said.
Natalie blinked.
“For proving that cruelty was always part of the ceremony.”
Margaret walked to the podium and removed the folded note from her purse.
“You recognize this handwriting, don’t you, Natalie?”
The bride’s smile froze.
Margaret held up Celeste’s instructions for the shaving.
Celeste stood. “Forgery.”
“Perhaps.”
Margaret placed the thick financial folder on the podium. The forensic accountant stepped beside her.
“The one hundred twenty million dollars will never reach you.”
Natalie’s face turned white.
“You can’t do that.”
“The trust requires verified identity and no concealed financial claims. You failed both.”
Conrad rushed toward the podium, but undercover investigators moved between the tables.
Then Margaret unfolded the final document.
“Before anyone celebrates,” she said, “there is one more truth.”
The ballroom doors opened.
Inspector Rusk entered with Nora Vale, Evelyn, and armed officers.
“Mrs. Whitmore,” he called. “We’re here.”
The scene unfolded exactly as it had in Margaret’s nightmares and plans.
Evidence case.
Warrant.
Nora’s arrival.
The empty envelope.
Then the lights failed.
A gunshot.
Emergency lights.
Nora gone.
Chaos spread faster than security could contain it.
Guests screamed and pushed toward the exits. Officers blocked the doors. Adrian searched beneath tables. Natalie stood frozen near the podium.
Margaret heard Arthur’s voice in memory.
When the lights fail, follow my voice.
A recording began through the ballroom speakers.
Arthur’s voice.
Margaret, the vault opens when the trust presentation begins. Go beneath the west stage. Do not follow the bride.
The lights flickered.
Natalie grabbed Margaret’s wrist.
“That recording is wrong,” she whispered. “The west stage is trapped.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because Nora was never at the doors.”
Margaret stared at her.
“I saw her.”
“You saw someone trained to look like us.”
A second gunshot sounded from the corridor.
Adrian ran toward them.
The ballroom floor trembled.
A section of the west stage lowered, revealing steel stairs descending into darkness.
Guests screamed again.
Celeste vanished into the crowd.
Inspector Rusk shouted orders.
Margaret looked at Natalie.
“Where is the real Nora?”
Natalie’s eyes filled with tears.
“In the vault.”
The stage continued to descend.
Adrian reached them.
“What is happening?”
Margaret took his hand.
“Your father is about to answer us.”
They entered the stairwell together.

Behind them, the steel doors closed.
And from somewhere below came the sound of a woman crying for help.
