Chapter 12 - The House Testifies

Detective Mercer refused to let Sadie leave the hospital. Sadie left anyway.
Wyatt found a wheelchair, Leah found an exit not watched by reporters, and Rosa found the authority in her voice to stop a nurse from following. Twenty minutes later, they reached Rosemont behind a line of police vehicles.
The mansion's windows were dark. Investigators had cut the main power, yet one green pulse glowed beneath the garden fuse line. Daniel stood near the opened tunnel wearing a protective mask and leaning on a crutch.
"Celeste entered through the conservatory before the warrant team arrived," he said. "The tunnel cameras show her near the hidden server. Then the feed died."
Mercer came across the lawn. "I told you to remain at the hospital."
"Arrest me after my mother."
"That can be arranged."
The detective looked at Sadie's pale face and sighed. "You stay behind the tactical team. If I say leave, you leave."
Officers entered through the coal chute while a second team opened the rose wall from outside. The steel cabinet had been removed, revealing a reinforced door with a brass lock.
Eleanor's key turned.
Beyond the door lay a room no one had seen on any architectural plan. Racks of servers lined both walls. Screens displayed camera views from bedrooms, offices, cars, and Halston hotels across the country. The surveillance network was far larger than Rosemont.
Celeste stood at the central console. A metal trash can burned beside her. She held stacks of paper over the flames.
"Step away," Mercer ordered.
Celeste dropped the papers. Officers extinguished the fire and placed her in handcuffs. She did not resist.
"You think this is mine?" she asked Sadie. "I was allowed to use it. That is not the same thing."
"Where is Thomas Cole?"
"Safe, if Vance followed instructions."
"And Mara?"
Celeste smiled faintly. "Still the only question that matters."
Mercer led her out. As she passed Daniel, Celeste said, "Your father was paid twice. Once to install the system, once to pretend he regretted it."
Daniel's face hardened, but he gave her no answer.
Forensic technicians isolated the servers. Most files had been encrypted, but Eleanor had left a directory keyed to Sadie's brass key. A chip embedded inside the key provided the password.
The house began to testify.
Video showed Everett striking employees, Vance carrying boxes of records into the tunnel, and Celeste coaching witnesses before police interviews. Audio captured secret board votes and instructions to shift pension money through the Valerian account. The carriage clocks had recorded enough crimes to fill entire shelves of evidence.
One file showed the night Eleanor died. Harold Vance entered her apartment carrying a medical case. He left forty minutes later with her black notebook. Her doctor arrived ten minutes after that and signed the certificate before examining the body.
Mercer issued warrants for both men.
Everett was denied release. Celeste was booked for arson, kidnapping conspiracy, evidence destruction, and administration of a controlled drug. The doctor was arrested at his clinic. Harold Vance remained missing.
Just before dawn, state police found Thomas Cole alive in a roadside motel registered under one of Vance's shell companies. He had been drugged and tied to a radiator. His injuries were not life threatening.
Wyatt spoke to his father by video from Rosemont's library. Thomas looked older than he had two days earlier.
"I am sorry," he said before Wyatt could speak.
"For what?"
"For helping Mara disappear. For letting you carry questions that belonged to me."
"Did she survive?"
"She crossed into Canada with her daughter. I saw them reach the other side. Three months later, I received a postcard with no message, only a bluebird. I believed they were safe."
"Why did Vance take you now?"
Thomas looked off camera. "He wanted the duplicate gate logs. He also wanted to know whether Mara had contacted me this year."
"Had she?"
Thomas hesitated.
Sadie moved closer to the screen.
"Mr. Cole, did Mara contact you?"
"Not Mara," he said. "Her daughter."
He told them a woman had called six weeks earlier using the name Nora Vale. She knew the three-note melody and asked whether Sadie still lived at Rosemont. Thomas warned her never to approach the estate. Before she hung up, she said Eleanor had been murdered and V.H. was returning for the board vote.
Leah searched the guest list from the engagement party.
There was no Nora Vale.
But at the bottom of the temporary staff roster was a server named Nora Voss. She had entered Rosemont two hours before Everett lifted the brick and had never signed out.
Security footage showed her carrying a tray toward Sadie in the garden.
Then, just before the attack, she removed a blond wig and looked directly into the camera.

She had Mara's face.
