Chapter 8 - the confession no one expected

Security around Margaret increased immediately.
Emma was transferred to another location, but she refused to remain hidden while investigators waited for Owen, Robert, or the anonymous trustee to make the next move.
The hotel key card belonged to the Grand Ellison, an old hotel near the city’s financial district.
Room 814 had been rented for the following night under Samuel Rhodes’s name.
The police believed it was a trap.
Emma believed whoever sent the photograph expected her to go anyway.
Adrian found a clause in Claire’s will that had not seemed important before.
If evidence confirms my continued survival following the public declaration of my death, Emma must be permitted to make her own decision regarding contact.
“She wrote this before the crash,” Emma said.
“She anticipated the possibility of disappearing,” Adrian replied.
“Why did you not tell me?”
“Until the body was identified as someone else, the clause had no legal effect.”
Margaret looked at him with disgust.
“My daughter turned her own life into a contract.”
“She was trying to create rules her enemies could not change.”
“Her enemies changed everything.”
Emma decided to enter the hotel room.
Police officers occupied the rooms on both sides. Ortiz monitored the hallway. Emma wore a concealed microphone.
At midnight, she used the key card.
Room 814 was dark.
The curtains were open, revealing the city skyline. A lamp illuminated a table near the window.
On the table sat a yellow dress.
Vanessa’s funeral dress.
Beside it was a sealed envelope and a laptop.
Emma entered.
The door locked automatically behind her.
Ortiz’s voice sounded through the earpiece.
“We lost the microphone signal. Leave the room.”
Emma tried the handle.
It would not open.
The laptop turned on.
Vanessa appeared on the screen.
The video had been recorded before her arrest.
“If Emma is seeing this,” Vanessa said, “Daniel has finally told enough of the truth to become dangerous.”
Emma moved closer.
Vanessa continued.
“I lied about Robert being the third voice. Daniel told me to identify him because Robert was already legally dead. He believed no one could prove otherwise.”
Emma felt anger rise in her throat.
“The third voice belonged to Owen,” Vanessa said. “But not Owen Vale.”
A photograph appeared on the screen.
It showed two young men with identical faces.
“Owen had a twin brother named Elias. Arthur used both men in the early trials. Owen became the public employee. Elias became the private one.”
Emma remembered the phone call from the archive.
Owen’s voice.
The voice in the bracelet had sounded similar, but not identical.
Vanessa explained that Owen handled the finances while Elias controlled the surviving research network. Elias lived under different identities and had overseen clinics in Europe, Canada, and South America.
Robert feared Elias.
Daniel worked for him.
“So did I,” Vanessa confessed.
Emma stared at the screen.
Vanessa’s affair with Daniel had been real, but it was not how she entered the Hale family.
Elias had hired her years earlier to observe Daniel and Claire.
“When Claire discovered the accounts, Elias ordered me to convince Daniel she was unstable. Daniel believed we could take control of the company and leave together. I let him believe that.”
Vanessa looked away from the camera.
“I did not know Elias planned to use Emma.”
The laptop displayed Emma’s stolen blood test.
The active marker in her blood was stronger than Claire’s.
Elias believed Emma’s cells could stabilize the compound and eliminate its delayed neurological effects.
Claire disappeared to prevent him from reaching her daughter.
“Claire agreed to cooperate,” Vanessa said, “but only if Elias allowed Emma to believe she was dead. Claire knew Emma would search for her otherwise.”
Emma clenched her fists.
Her mother had not abandoned her because she did not love her.
She had abandoned her because she believed grief would be safer than the truth.
Vanessa’s video continued.
“The body in the car belonged to a research patient who died at one of Elias’s clinics. Robert arranged the crash and falsified the identification.”
Robert had tried to protect Claire.
But he had also helped conceal an innocent person’s death.
“Daniel learned Claire survived,” Vanessa said. “He agreed to remain silent because Elias promised to erase the evidence of his financial crimes. When the evidence survived, Daniel tried to blame Owen.”
The screen changed.
A security video showed Daniel meeting Elias in a parking structure three days after Claire’s disappearance.
Daniel gave him a storage drive.
In return, Elias gave Daniel the bracelet.
Daniel had not merely remained silent.
He had traded information for protection.
The video ended with Vanessa facing the camera.
“I copied Daniel’s drive before his arrest. Elias will kill me if he learns I made this recording.”
She took a breath.
“The hotel room is controlled by him. The door will remain locked until Emma opens the envelope.”
Emma looked at the table.
Ortiz’s voice was still absent.
Emma opened the envelope.
Inside was a legal document transferring Vanessa’s hidden accounts, property, and evidence files to Claire’s foundation.
There was also a handwritten note.
Claire asked me to wear the bracelet to the funeral.
Emma stopped.
Vanessa’s note continued.
She needed Daniel to believe I was still loyal to him. She also needed Elias to believe the bracelet was secure.
My smile beside the coffin was for the cameras.
My words to Margaret were the final phrase Claire instructed me to say.
I won.
The phrase activated the bracelet’s emergency transmission.
Vanessa had not worn it only as a trophy.
She had triggered the release of Claire’s evidence.
Emma reconsidered everything Vanessa had done.
She had lied.
She had helped Daniel steal.
She had manipulated Claire and participated in the attempt to remove her from the company.
But before the funeral, she had changed sides.
The laptop screen displayed one final message.
VANESSA COLE HAS REQUESTED PROTECTIVE TESTIMONY.
Emma had believed Vanessa was bargaining only to save herself.
She had also been continuing Claire’s plan.
A section of the wall opened.
Behind it stood Owen Vale.
He appeared exhausted and older than he had at the funeral. Snow had burned the skin around his cheeks. One arm was bandaged.
Emma stepped back.
“You sent the hotel key.”
“Yes.”
“You burned the lake house.”
“I burned records that would have led Elias to Samuel.”
“You left a message accusing Adrian.”
“To see whether Elias was monitoring the police.”
“You used me.”
“I used the same method Claire used. I gave our enemy information he could not resist.”
Emma looked toward the locked door.
“Where is my mother?”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Elias moves her every seventy-two hours.”
“Why are you helping him?”
“I’m not.”
“You stole from the foundation.”
“I moved money into accounts Elias controlled because he threatened my family.”
“You never had a family.”
Owen’s expression hardened.
“That is what Arthur wanted people to believe.”
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Owen with a woman and a young boy.
The boy wore a raven pendant.
“Elias took my son twenty-one years ago,” Owen said. “He raised him inside the research program.”
Emma looked at the boy’s face.
May you like
She recognized him.
Adrian Mercer.
