THE BRACELET IN THE WILL / Chapter 1 / 9

Chapter 1 - the second bracelet

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Emma walked slowly down the center aisle. Her black coat was wet from the rain, and strands of dark hair clung to her cheeks. She looked exhausted, but her eyes remained fixed on Vanessa.

The second bracelet rested in her palm.

It appeared identical to the one on Vanessa’s wrist.

Margaret rose from the front pew.

“Emma.”

Emma did not look at her grandmother.

She stopped beside the coffin and placed the bracelet on the white cloth covering Claire’s hands.

“This is my mother’s bracelet,” she said.

Vanessa recovered quickly.

“That’s impossible. Claire gave this one to me.”

Emma finally looked at her.

“My mother would never give you anything that belonged to her.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Enough. This is a funeral.”

Emma gave him a cold stare.

“You stopped being allowed to tell me what to do when you brought your mistress to my mother’s funeral wearing my mother’s jewelry.”

A murmur passed through the relatives.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Vanessa was Claire’s friend.”

“Then why did Mom hire a private investigator to follow both of you?”

Daniel’s expression froze.

Vanessa glanced toward the chapel doors.

Two uniformed officers stood outside beneath the stone entrance.

They had not entered, but Vanessa noticed them.

So did Daniel.

Adrian closed the black folder.

“Miss Hale, where did you obtain that bracelet?”

“It was delivered to me this morning.”

“By whom?”

“There was no name.”

Emma removed a folded note from her coat pocket and handed it to him.

Adrian read it silently.

Margaret moved closer.

“What does it say?”

Emma answered before he could.

“Bring this to the funeral. Do not let Vanessa remove hers. Do not allow Daniel to leave before the will is read.”

Daniel laughed, though there was no humor in it.

“This is absurd. Someone is manipulating you.”

“Mom knew you would say that.”

Emma produced another envelope.

On the front was Claire’s handwriting.

For Emma, if Daniel calls the truth manipulation.

Daniel stared at it.

Vanessa’s hand trembled over the bracelet.

Adrian inspected the seal.

“This was prepared by my office,” he said.

“You knew about it?” Margaret asked.

“No. Claire used several sealed-delivery instructions. Some were scheduled to be delivered only after specific conditions were met.”

“What condition was met this morning?”

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“The original bracelet was detected inside this chapel.”

Vanessa took a step backward.

Daniel turned toward her.

“You said it had no tracking function.”

“I didn’t know it did.”

Emma picked up the bracelet she had placed beside the coffin.

“This one isn’t the original,” she said. “It’s a key.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“A key to what?”

Emma opened Claire’s envelope.

Inside was a single handwritten sentence.

The bracelet she wears contains the confession. The bracelet I sent you contains the missing minute.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel reached for the envelope.

Emma pulled it away.

Adrian stepped between them.

“Mr. Hale, do not touch anything.”

“I am Claire’s husband.”

“And I am the executor of Claire’s will.”

“You work for my family.”

“I worked for Claire.”

The distinction landed hard.

Adrian turned to Emma.

“Did you listen to the file?”

“No. The bracelet won’t open for me.”

“Then how do you know what it contains?”

“The note says the recording can only be unlocked during the official reading of the will.”

Margaret looked toward the coffin.

Even in death, her daughter had planned every step.

Adrian asked the funeral director to lock the chapel doors. The relatives protested, but nobody left.

Daniel moved close to Vanessa.

“What exactly did Claire record?”

Vanessa’s lips barely moved.

“I don’t know.”

“You were there.”

“So were you.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Vanessa looked at the officers waiting outside.

“I heard the bracelet hit the floor. I thought it broke.”

Emma heard her.

“Where did it hit the floor?”

Vanessa said nothing.

“Where did my mother die, Vanessa?”

“The police report says her car left the road.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Daniel grabbed Emma’s arm.

Margaret struck his hand away.

It was the first time she had touched him since Claire’s death.

“Never put your hands on my granddaughter again.”

Daniel stared at her in disbelief.

For years, Margaret had defended him. She had praised his leadership, excused his arrogance, and overlooked the fractures in his marriage to Claire.

But the woman standing in front of him now looked nothing like the mother-in-law he remembered.

Adrian placed Emma’s bracelet beside the black device.

A small blue light appeared.

The device recognized it.

A screen displayed a message.

SECOND KEY REQUIRED.

Everyone looked at Vanessa’s wrist.

Adrian extended his hand.

“Remove the bracelet.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“It was a gift.”

“It may be evidence in an active investigation.”

“No one has proved that.”

Emma moved closer.

“My mother’s last recording is inside it.”

Vanessa backed into a pew.

“She gave it to me.”

“Then you shouldn’t be afraid to prove it.”

Daniel whispered something into Vanessa’s ear.

She looked at him sharply.

Margaret saw it.

“What did he say?”

Neither answered.

Margaret turned toward the officers outside.

“I believe someone is attempting to leave with evidence connected to my daughter’s death.”

Vanessa immediately unfastened the bracelet.

She placed it in Adrian’s hand.

The blue light changed to green.

A new message appeared.

BOTH KEYS ACCEPTED.

Adrian pressed play.

Claire’s voice returned.

The chapel listened as she argued with Daniel and Vanessa inside an unknown room. They demanded that she sign documents. She refused. A third man warned her to stop investigating the family accounts.

Footsteps followed.

A door opened.

Wind filled the recording.

Claire whispered directly into the bracelet.

“If Emma hears this, tell her I was right about the lake house.”

Then there was the sound of a car engine.

A man spoke from close beside her.

“Take the mountain road.”

Claire answered, “The brakes won’t hold.”

The recording ended.

Adrian stared at the device.

Margaret’s face drained of color.

“The lake house,” she whispered.

Daniel stepped away from Vanessa.

Emma noticed.

“What is at the lake house?”

Margaret did not answer immediately.

May you like

She looked toward the coffin as though Claire might sit up and accuse her.

Finally, Margaret said, “A room your mother was never supposed to find.”
