Chapter 6 - Caldwell Ventures)

Grant did not answer for several seconds.
Claire waited.
He finally said, "It's an investment account."
"Why doesn't your wife know about it?"
"It was temporary."
"That wasn't my question."
Grant reached for the bank statement.
Claire pulled it away.
"Get out."
"This is my house."
"So you've said."
"I don't have to explain my finances to you."
"No. You have to explain them to Amelia."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"Where is she?"
Claire turned toward the stairs.
"Her attorney will contact you."
"Claire."
She stopped.
Grant lowered his voice.
"Please."
Claire looked back.
For the first time, his fear seemed genuine.
"Is she okay?"
"She's alive."
"That's not what I asked."
"It's the answer you earned."
Claire walked downstairs.
Grant remained in the nursery.
He looked at the stain.
Then at the empty bassinet.
Then at his watch on the dresser.
Finally he sat on the floor.
Caldwell Ventures had begun seven months earlier.
Grant had created the limited liability company with Jason.
At first it really had been an investment project.
Jason knew a developer buying small vacation rentals.
Grant wanted in.
Amelia had been pregnant.
They had agreed to build their emergency savings before making large investments.
Grant knew she would say no.
So he did not ask.
He told himself he was protecting her from unnecessary worry.
The first transfer was five thousand dollars.
Then three thousand.
Then another four.
When the development deal fell through, Grant planned to return the money.
Before he could, Jason suggested a different opportunity.
Grant transferred more.
The account grew smaller.
Then the birthday trip approached.
Grant used part of what remained to upgrade the hotel package.
He told himself he would replace everything after his annual bonus.
He had believed there was time.
Grant sat in the nursery holding his head.
He had not considered himself a liar.
He had considered himself a man who delayed difficult conversations.
Now an attorney would choose the language.
At Claire's home, Amelia sat on the couch with Owen sleeping against her.
She had been discharged that morning.
Claire had converted the downstairs guest room into a temporary nursery.
A bassinet stood beside the bed.
Diapers filled one drawer.
Bottles had been sterilized.
A soft lamp glowed in the corner.
It was not home.
But Amelia could breathe there.
Naomi sat across from her.
"The company exists."
Amelia looked down at Owen.
"How long?"
"Seven months."
Amelia closed her eyes.
"So while I was pregnant."
"Yes."
"How much money?"
"We're still tracing it."
"At least eighteen thousand?"
"At least."
Amelia shook her head.
"We were saving that for my unpaid leave."
Naomi nodded.
That money had been the reason Amelia believed she could take twelve weeks away from work.
Without it, the future changed.
Mortgage.
Medical bills.
Childcare.
Food.
Everything.
Claire sat beside her.
"You'll be okay."
Amelia laughed quietly.
"People keep saying that."
Claire immediately understood.
"I'm sorry."
"No."
Amelia touched her sister's hand.
"You mean it differently."
Naomi closed the folder.
"Amelia, there is something you need to decide soon."
"What?"
"Whether Grant can stay in the house while you're separated."
Amelia looked around Claire's living room.
"I don't want to go back there yet."
"You don't have to."
"But it's my house too."
"Correct."
Amelia looked at Owen.
"If he stays, he'll act like I left."
Naomi did not answer.
Amelia understood the silence.
Grant was already building a record.
Messages.
Flowers.
Cleaning.
Offers to help.
Evidence of a husband trying to reconcile.
Amelia's fear and anger could be reframed as instability.
The thought made her stomach turn.
"What do you recommend?"
"I recommend facts."
Naomi opened another folder.
"The baby monitor recording."
Amelia stiffened.
"We don't have to use it."
"No."
Amelia took a breath.
"Use it."
Claire looked at her.
"Are you sure?"
"I crawled across that floor because I was alone."
Her voice shook.
"I'm done protecting the person who left me there."
Naomi nodded.
"Then we preserve everything."
That evening, Grant called.
Amelia stared at the screen.
Naomi had recommended written communication.
She declined.
A message arrived.
Please let me see Owen.
Amelia read it.
She typed slowly.
You can see him tomorrow at Claire's from 2 to 3. Claire will remain present.
Grant replied immediately.
Why does Claire need to be there?
Amelia stared.
Then typed:
Because I need her there.
Grant's answer took longer.
Okay.
The next afternoon he arrived early.
Claire opened the door.
"No arguing."
Grant looked exhausted.
"I came to see my son."
"And Amelia."
"If she wants."
Claire stepped aside.
Grant entered.
Amelia sat in the living room.
Owen was awake in her arms.
Grant stopped when he saw them.
For several seconds no one spoke.
Then Amelia stood carefully.
She handed Owen to him.
Grant's hands trembled.
"Hey."
His voice cracked.
Owen stared up at him.
Grant smiled through tears.
"Hey, buddy."
Amelia watched.
This was the hardest part.
Grant loved Owen.
She knew that.
A person could love someone and still fail them.
That truth was more complicated than hatred.
Grant sat.
For twenty minutes, he held his son.
Then he looked at Amelia.
"I'm closing Caldwell Ventures."
She said nothing.
"I'll repay everything."
"With what?"
"My retirement account."
"That creates penalties."
"I don't care."
"I do. Because it's marital money too."
Grant looked down.
"Naomi told you."
"She explained what you didn't."
Grant flinched.
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
"After the investment paid."
"And if it lost everything?"
He had no answer.
Amelia nodded.
"Exactly."
Grant looked at Owen.
"I thought I could fix it before you knew."
"That's how you handle everything."
"What does that mean?"
"You wait until consequences arrive, then you become sorry."
Grant's face tightened.
"That's not fair."
Amelia almost laughed.
"Fair?"
Claire shifted but stayed silent.
Amelia continued.
"I asked you to stay home because I couldn't stand without getting dizzy."
"I know."
"You told me I was making the trip into a test."
"I know."
"I asked you to come home."
"I know."
"You ignored me."
Grant looked down.
"I know."
"Then I nearly died."
His eyes filled.
"I know."
Amelia's voice softened.
"And somehow your biggest concern is whether I'm being fair."
Grant looked at her.
He finally understood there was no argument that could win.
Owen began fussing.
Grant handed him back.
Amelia took her son.
The hour ended.
Grant stood.
At the doorway he turned.
"Can I ask one thing?"
Amelia waited.
"Are you going to divorce me?"
Claire looked at her sister.
Amelia stared at Grant.
"I don't know."
Hope appeared in his face.
Then Amelia continued.
"But I'm going to find out who I am when I'm no longer spending all my energy making excuses for you."
Grant's hope vanished.
He left.
That night, Jason called Amelia.
She almost ignored it.
Then answered.
"Hello?"
Jason sounded nervous.
"Amelia, I think there's something you need to know."
Her hand tightened around the phone.
"What?"
"It's about the weekend."
Amelia looked toward Claire.
Jason took a breath.
"Grant didn't tell us you asked him to come home."
Amelia said nothing.
"He told us something very different."
"What did he tell you?"
Jason hesitated.
May you like
Then answered.
"He said you were perfectly fine."
