Chapter 4 - The Call No One Could Reach Him For)

Amelia woke to the sound of a machine.
Slow.
Regular.
Beeping.
For several seconds she did not know where she was.
Then she remembered Owen crying.
The carpet.
The phone under the crib.
Her hand through the bassinet.
Her eyes opened.
A hospital ceiling.
"Amelia?"
Claire's voice.
Amelia turned her head.
Claire sat beside the bed.
Her face was swollen from crying.
"Owen."
"He's okay."
Amelia tried to sit up.
Pain and weakness stopped her.
"Where is he?"
"With the pediatric nurse. He's completely okay."
Amelia closed her eyes.
A tear slid toward her ear.
"Promise."
"I promise."
Claire took her hand.
"He's perfect."
Amelia breathed out.
Only then did she ask, "Grant?"
Claire's fingers tightened slightly.
"He's here."
Amelia opened her eyes again.
"Did he come back?"
"Yes."
"When?"
Claire hesitated.
"After I finally reached him."
Amelia looked toward the window.
It was dark outside.
"How long?"
"What?"
"How long after I called him?"
Claire understood.
"Amelia."
"Tell me."
Claire looked down.
"You called him before noon."
"And when did he get here?"
"Five thirty."
Amelia stared at the ceiling.
Something inside her went quiet.
Not broken.
Quiet.
There was a difference.
She had spent years making excuses for Grant.
He was busy.
He was practical.
He was not good with emotion.
He loved differently.
He did not mean it that way.
Every excuse had functioned like another little board nailed over a crack.
Now there were too many cracks.
The structure could no longer be hidden.
"I asked him to come home."
Claire nodded.
"I know."
"He said not to panic."
"I saw the message."
Amelia turned her head.
"You saw my phone?"
"The paramedics gave it to the hospital. It was under the crib."
Amelia remembered reaching for it.
Her throat tightened.
"Owen was crying."
"I know."
"I couldn't get to him."
"But you touched his foot."
Amelia stared at Claire.
"How do you know?"
"The baby monitor recording."
Amelia's face changed.
"It recorded?"
"Everything."
Amelia looked away.
Claire could see shame cross her face.
"Don't."
"What?"
"Do not be embarrassed."
"I wasn't strong enough to stand."
"You had a medical emergency."
"I was crawling."
"You saved your son."
Amelia looked back at her.
Claire's eyes filled again.
"You called for help when nobody else was there."
Nobody else.
The words sat between them.
Amelia whispered, "I told him."
"I know."
"He looked at me like I was ruining his birthday."
Claire did not answer.
She did not need to.
Amelia closed her eyes.
"Is he asking to see me?"
"Yes."
"Tell them no."
"I already did."
Amelia looked at her sister.
For the first time that day, she almost smiled.
"Thank you."
Outside Amelia's room, Grant sat in the hallway.
He had been there for nearly four hours.
Nobody had invited him inside.
He had spoken with Dr. Harper.
The conversation lasted six minutes.
Grant asked whether Amelia's condition could have been predicted.
The doctor looked at him in a way he did not like.
"She reported symptoms before the emergency?"
Grant hesitated.
"Dizziness."
"Was she alone?"
Grant looked toward the floor.
"Yes."
The doctor nodded once.
"Then she was at increased risk if her symptoms worsened."
Grant heard accusation even though the doctor had not accused him.
"I didn't know."
Dr. Harper answered calmly.
"Now you do."
At 10:30, Claire walked into the hallway.
Grant stood.
"Can I see her?"
"No."
"Claire."
"She doesn't want you in there."
"She's emotional."
Claire stared at him.
Grant immediately regretted the word.
"You should go home."
"I'm not leaving."
"Then get a hotel."
"This is my family."
Claire's expression hardened.
"You left your family."
Grant lowered his voice.
"I made a mistake."
Claire laughed softly.
"That's what you think this is?"
"What do you want me to call it?"
"I don't care what you call it."
"Claire, I came back."
"After she almost died."
Grant flinched.
Claire stepped closer.
"She begged you before she almost died."
"I didn't know."
"You keep saying that like it's a defense."
"It is the truth."
"No. The truth is that you didn't want to know."
Grant's face tightened.
Claire turned away.
He grabbed her arm.
Not violently.
But firmly.
Claire looked down at his hand.
Grant released her immediately.
"Where is Owen?"
"With Amelia now."
"I want to see him."
"Ask the nurse."
"Why are you making everything difficult?"
Claire stared at him.
"I'm not making anything difficult. I'm simply not making anything easier for you."
She walked away.
Grant sat again.
His phone vibrated.
Jason.
Then Marcus.
Then a message from his mother.
Claire called me. What happened?
Grant stared at the screen.
His thumb hovered over the keyboard.
He typed:
Amelia had a postpartum complication. She's stable.
His mother replied quickly.
Thank God. Don't blame yourself. These things happen.
Grant read that sentence several times.
Don't blame yourself.
It was exactly what he needed.
He called her.
"Mom."
"Grant, sweetheart."
Her voice immediately softened him.
"I feel like everyone here thinks I did something."
"You didn't cause a medical complication."
"I left."
"You had a trip planned."
"She asked me not to."
His mother paused.
"Women are emotional after childbirth."
Grant closed his eyes.
"Claire is acting like I abandoned them."
"Claire has always been dramatic when it comes to Amelia."
Grant exhaled.
For several minutes, his mother rebuilt the explanations he had always depended on.
He could not have known.
He had offered to cancel months earlier.
Amelia had said the trip was fine before Owen came early.
He deserved a birthday.
He returned as soon as he understood.
By the end of the call, Grant felt less guilty.
Then he looked up.
Claire stood twenty feet away.
She had heard enough.
Her face was expressionless.
Grant ended the call.
Claire walked toward him.
"What?"
She held out Amelia's phone.
The screen showed his text.
Let's not panic. Claire is coming tonight.
Grant looked at it.
"So?"
Claire scrolled.
I need you to come home.
Then another message.
I'm bleeding more.
Grant stared.
He frowned.
"I never saw that one."
Claire looked at the delivery time.
12:16.
His phone had received it.
He shook his head.
"I was at lunch."
"You received it."
"I didn't read it."
"That is not better."
Grant looked away.
Claire pulled the phone back.
"There's something else you should know."
Grant looked at her.
"The monitor recorded Amelia calling for help."
His jaw tightened.
"Okay."
"It also recorded the smart home announcements."
Grant frowned.
"What announcements?"
Claire's eyes did not leave his.
"Every time the system tried to call you as her emergency contact."
Grant went still.
Claire continued.
"The first call rang."
"The second call rang."
"The third call was automatically declined."
Grant stared at her.
"I didn't decline an emergency call."
"Your phone did."
"What are you talking about?"
Claire looked down at his expensive watch.
"You enabled vacation focus mode."
Grant's face changed.
Claire had already checked.
The setting Grant had activated for the resort automatically blocked calls from the house system after repeated unanswered attempts.
He had designed four days in which nothing from home could interrupt him.
May you like
Claire said quietly, "You didn't just fail to answer."
"You made sure you wouldn't have to."
