Chapter 5 - The Missing Seven Minutes

Darkness swallowed the room.
Mateo squeezed Claire's hand.
“Mom.”
“I'm here.”
The emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
Enough to see.
Not enough to feel safe.
Richard was no longer outside the office.
Claire opened the back door.
They escaped through the garage.
The black SUV was gone.
For the first time in seven years, Claire wondered where Richard went when he said he had business.
They reached a small guest cottage behind the property.
Maria locked the door.
Claire finally allowed herself to breathe.
“What did he mean?”
Maria sat down.
“Your mother-in-law knows about the missing seven minutes.”
Claire stared at her.
“What missing seven minutes?”
Maria looked at Mateo.
“Your son knows.”
Mateo nodded.
Claire crouched beside him.
“Tell me.”
Mateo closed his eyes.
“I remember the car.”
“Okay.”
“Grandma was driving.”
Claire's heart stopped.
“Richard wasn't driving?”
Mateo shook his head.
“Grandma was.”
“What happened?”
“She took us somewhere.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Who else was there?”
“Pamela.”
Claire swallowed.
“And Dad?”
“He came later.”
The pieces began shifting.
Claire had always believed Richard had been with Mateo that night.
But the recording showed Evelyn in the passenger seat.
Mateo said she was driving.
Why?
Claire suddenly remembered something else.
A hospital bracelet.
A number.
A name she had never understood.
Claire stood.
“Maria.”
“Yes?”
“Do you remember the hospital where Mateo was treated after that night?”
“St. Vincent.”
Claire grabbed her phone.
She called the hospital.
They refused to provide records.
But Claire knew someone.
A former nurse who had worked there.
Twenty minutes later, the nurse sent her a photograph.
It was a handwritten admission note.
Claire stared.
The patient had been admitted under a different name.
Not Mateo Bennett.
Her hands shook.
“Why would they use another name?”
Maria read the note.
“Because someone wanted him off the official record.”
Claire looked at Mateo.
“What happened to you that night?”
He didn't answer.
Then he whispered.
“I wasn't sick.”
Claire closed her eyes.
She had spent seven years believing her child had suffered a mysterious medical condition.
But maybe he hadn't.
Maybe someone had made sure everyone believed he had.
The next morning, Claire went to Richard's company.
She entered his private office using an access code she had been given years ago.
Inside, she found a locked drawer.
She broke it open.
There was a folder.
PROPERTY TRANSFER.
Underneath it was a document with her name.
Claire read it.
Then reread it.
Her entire company had been placed into a trust.
A trust she had never authorized.
The beneficiary was not Richard.
It was a company she had never heard of.
Bennett Family Holdings.
Claire's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman's voice whispered.
“Claire?”
“Who is this?”
“Pamela.”
Claire froze.
“Where are you?”
“I don't have much time.”
“Tell me everything.”
Pamela breathed heavily.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard isn't the person you need to be afraid of.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
“Then who?”
Silence.
Then Pamela said:
“Your father-in-law.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“But he's dead.”
May you like
Pamela replied quietly.
“That is what they wanted you to believe.”
