Chapter 4 - The Recording

They waited until midnight.

The mansion was silent.

Claire sat inside the small office above the garage.

Maria locked the door.

Mateo sat beside his mother.

Claire inserted the memory card into an old laptop.

The screen flickered.

A folder appeared.

There was only one file.

DATE_07_14.

Claire clicked it.

The footage began.

The black SUV was parked outside the old Bennett house.

Rain covered the windshield.

Richard was in the driver's seat.

Evelyn sat beside him.

A younger Pamela sat in the back.

And between them was Mateo.

Claire covered her mouth.

The footage had no sound.

But it was enough.

Mateo was crying.

Evelyn held a small amber bottle.

Richard turned around.

Pamela looked frightened.

Then Richard said something.

Claire couldn't hear it.

She paused the footage.

“What is he saying?”

Maria shook her head.

“There's no audio.”

Claire continued.

Richard opened the rear door.

A few seconds later, Claire appeared in the driveway.

She ran toward them.

The footage stopped.

Claire stared at the frozen screen.

“That can't be all.”

Maria pointed at the file information.

“Look.”

There was another folder.

Hidden.

Claire opened it.

Inside were seventeen recordings.

Different dates.

Different locations.

But the same SUV.

The same people.

And sometimes Mateo.

Claire clicked the oldest file.

Then another.

Then another.

She began to understand.

The silence had not begun that rainy night.

It had been created afterward.

There were recordings of therapy appointments.

Arguments.

Richard talking to doctors.

Evelyn telling relatives that Claire was unstable.

And one recording showed Richard alone with Mateo.

The boy was younger.

Maybe five.

Richard sat across from him.

Even without sound, his body language was unmistakable.

He was threatening the child.

Mateo looked terrified.

Claire couldn't breathe.

Then the recording changed.

A different room.

A different year.

Pamela was speaking to Richard.

This file had audio.

Her voice was clear.

“I told you this would eventually come back.”

Richard answered.

“Not if Claire never sees the documents.”

“What about the boy?”

“He doesn't remember enough.”

Pamela hesitated.

“He remembers more than you think.”

Richard leaned closer.

“Then make sure he stays quiet.”

Claire stopped the video.

She turned toward Mateo.

“Did you hear that?”

He nodded.

“I remember Pamela.”

“From the car?”

“Yes.”

“What did she do?”

Mateo looked at Maria.

Maria nodded.

“You can tell her.”

Mateo took a breath.

“She tried to help me.”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Why didn't she?”

“Dad stopped her.”

A sound came from outside.

Footsteps.

Maria immediately closed the laptop.

Someone tried the office door.

Claire froze.

Richard's voice came through the wood.

“Claire?”

Nobody answered.

“Are you awake?”

Claire looked at Maria.

Maria pointed toward the back exit.

Claire took Mateo's hand.

They moved quietly.

But before Claire could open the second door, Richard spoke again.

“I know you're in there.”

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

“Your son isn't the only person who remembers that night.”

Claire stopped.

Richard continued.

“Ask your mother-in-law.”

Evelyn's voice suddenly came from the hallway.

“Richard.”

He answered.

“It's time.”

Claire stared at Maria.

“Time for what?”

May you like

Maria shook her head.

Then the lights went out.
