Chapter 4 - Anna’s Last Secret

Detective Moreno survived the gunshot.

The bullet passed through her shoulder without striking an artery, but the attack confirmed what Mark already suspected. Vanessa had not acted alone, and someone with access to the estate was willing to kill to protect the secret beneath it.

Police evacuated the guests and declared the mansion a crime scene.

Mark drove Leo away in the old utility vehicle while officers searched the grounds.

Rain began falling as they left the city.

Leo slept beneath a blanket in the passenger seat, his head resting against the window. Every few minutes, he whimpered and pulled his knees closer to his chest.

Mark drove one-handed, keeping his injured palm wrapped in a handkerchief.

His mind returned to the words on the cellar wall.

She is still alive.

There was only one woman those words could mean.

Anna.

But Mark had identified Anna’s body after the accident.

Or believed he had.

The crash had happened on a mountain road during a storm. Her car had broken through a barrier and burned in a ravine. The medical examiner said identification had been made through dental records and personal jewelry.

Mark had not been permitted to see her face.

He had accepted the sealed coffin because everyone told him there was nothing recognizable left.

What if there had never been a body?

The lake house appeared near dawn.

It stood among pine trees beside black water, small and weathered compared with the mansion. Mark unlocked the door and carried Leo inside.

The air smelled of cedar and dust.

He placed the boy in Anna’s old bedroom and sat beside him until his breathing became steady.

Then Mark searched the house.

Anna had kept journals, boxes of photographs and old legal documents there. Mark had avoided touching them after her death.

Inside the attic, beneath a stack of winter blankets, he found a locked cedar chest.

The key was taped beneath Anna’s writing desk.

Inside lay three journals, a digital recorder and a sealed envelope addressed to Mark.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Mark,

If you are reading this, then something has gone wrong, and I was not able to explain in person.

Do not trust the official story of my death.

Mark stopped breathing.

He read the line again.

Then continued.

The Harrison family has a secret that began before you were born. Your father believed he buried it, but he only gave it new life.

There is another child.

She is yours.

Mark dropped into the chair.

The paper trembled in his hands.

That cannot be true.

Yet Anna’s message continued.

Her name is Elise. She was born eight months before Leo.

You did not betray me. You did not know she existed.

The circumstances of her birth are complicated, and I need you to believe that I tried to protect both children.

Vanessa knows about Elise.

She also knows what your father did.

If Vanessa enters your life after I am gone, it is not a coincidence.

Mark stood abruptly, knocking the chair backward.

Vanessa had first approached him at a charity auction three years after Anna’s death. She had seemed like a stranger.

According to Anna, she had been waiting.

He unfolded the next page.

Evelyn Shaw can explain everything.

She helped deliver Elise and hid the original medical records. I gave Leo a secure phone programmed with your number and hers.

I pray he never has to use it.

If he does, take both children and disappear before they are used against you.

Mark read the final sentence twice.

Both children.

Where was Elise?

He turned on the digital recorder.

Static filled the room.

Then Anna’s voice emerged.

“Mark, I don’t know how much time I have.”

He covered his mouth.

Six years had passed since he last heard her speak.

“The story begins with your father and a medical foundation called Bellweather. Publicly, it funded fertility research and treatment for women who could not afford care. Privately, it arranged illegal surrogacies for powerful families.”

Mark remembered the Bellweather Foundation. His father had donated millions to it before it closed following a financial scandal.

Anna continued.

“Your biological material was stored without your knowledge after surgery when you were twenty-three. Years later, it was used to create embryos. One child survived.”

Mark felt as though the floor shifted beneath him.

“Elise was born to a surrogate named Evelyn Shaw. Your father wanted a backup heir because he believed I could not have children. Then I became pregnant with Leo.”

A long silence followed on the recording.

“When your father learned Leo was healthy, Elise became a problem. He ordered all records destroyed. Evelyn refused to surrender her. I found them and helped them disappear.”

Mark’s father, Richard Harrison, had died seven years earlier.

Mark had respected him.

Feared him.

But never imagined this.

“Vanessa worked for Bellweather,” Anna said. “She was younger then, but she helped recruit vulnerable women. She knows Elise exists. She believes controlling the child will give her access to the Harrison trust.”

Mark paused the recording.

The family trust would eventually transfer billions of dollars to Mark’s biological children.

If Elise could be proven to be his daughter, she would be entitled to half.

Vanessa had married Mark, targeted Leo and searched for Elise.

The kennel was not punishment alone.

It had been an interrogation.

Mark pressed play.

“If you receive this, find Evelyn before Vanessa does. The last safe address is hidden beneath the floorboard under Leo’s bed at the lake house.”

Mark ran downstairs.

He entered the room where Leo slept and carefully moved the small wooden bed.

Beneath it, one floorboard was newer than the others.

He pried it loose.

Inside was a sealed plastic envelope containing a map, a brass key and a photograph.

The photograph showed Anna beside a dark-haired woman holding a baby girl.

On the back was written:

Elise Harrison. Born October 14.

Alive.

Loved.

Hidden.

Leo stirred.

Mark quickly replaced the board, but the boy opened his eyes.

“Did you find Evelyn?”

“I found where she might be.”

Leo sat up.

“Is Mommy with her?”

Mark did not know how to answer.

Before he could speak, headlights moved between the trees outside.

A vehicle stopped near the house.

Mark switched off the bedroom lamp and moved toward the window.

A black SUV waited in the rain.

The driver’s door opened.

Vanessa stepped out.

She looked directly up at the bedroom window.

Then she raised Mark’s missing photograph in one hand and a gun in the other.
