Chapter 11 - The Twin Claim

By noon, Harrison Global’s stock had fallen eighteen percent.

News channels repeated Vanessa’s accusations every few minutes. Photographs of Mark entering Saint Augustine Hospital appeared beside headlines describing him as unstable, violent and dangerous.

Gerald claimed the underground clinic had been a rehabilitation center operated by Evelyn Shaw, not a prison.

Vanessa presented bruises from the lake house struggle as evidence Mark had assaulted her.

Most damaging of all, she produced a birth certificate for a girl named Lillian Harrison, born seven minutes after Leo.

Anna watched the coverage from her hospital bed.

“It’s false.”

“The document has an official seal,” Moreno said.

“Bellweather created official documents for years.”

Mark looked at the birth date.

It matched Leo’s.

Vanessa claimed Lillian had been hidden by Anna and then murdered during an illegal adoption. She argued that Mark’s supposed mental collapse began when he discovered the truth.

“Why invent a twin?” Mark asked.

Anna studied the name.

“Because the original trust may use the phrase youngest surviving child.”

“If Leo had a younger twin, that child would receive controlling interest.”

“And whoever controls that child controls the company,” Moreno said.

Mark looked at the television.

Vanessa did not merely want to escape prison.

She wanted to take everything.

A court hearing was scheduled for the following morning.

Mark’s lawyers warned that his refusal to disclose Anna’s survival earlier would be portrayed as deception. His decision to take Leo from the mansion during an active investigation would be called abduction.

Moreno’s body camera footage from the underground clinic should have destroyed Vanessa’s claims, but the recordings had been corrupted.

Someone inside the police evidence system was helping Gerald.

They needed proof outside official channels.

Anna asked for the red phone.

Leo brought it to her.

She entered a code Mark had never seen.

A hidden folder appeared.

It contained only one audio file.

Anna pressed play.

Richard Harrison’s voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this, Gerald has made his move.”

Mark recognized his father immediately.

The recording continued.

“I committed crimes in the name of preserving this family. I allowed Bellweather to use my son’s genetic material without consent. I believed an additional heir would protect the company. Instead, I created children who became targets.”

Mark clenched his jaw.

Richard sounded older than he remembered.

“I cannot undo the harm. I can only leave evidence where Gerald cannot easily destroy it.”

Richard described a secure archive beneath the Harrison family mausoleum.

Inside was a master ledger listing Bellweather patients, doctors, financial transactions and genetic records.

The ledger would prove Vanessa’s identity, Gerald’s involvement and Elise’s birth.

It could also collapse Harrison Global.

The company had received investments connected to Bellweather’s hidden profits.

Mark’s lawyers urged caution.

“Releasing the ledger could lead to criminal investigations across the entire corporation,” one attorney said. “Thousands of employees could lose their jobs.”

Mark looked at Anna.

Vanessa had warned him of the same consequence.

But hiding the truth had already destroyed lives.

“We release it,” he said.

“First we must obtain it,” Moreno replied.

The Harrison mausoleum stood on private land two hours away.

Mark, Moreno and two trusted officers left immediately.

Anna remained under protection with Leo.

At the cemetery, they found the mausoleum door open.

Fresh tire tracks crossed the mud.

Gerald had reached it first.

Inside, stone coffins lined the walls. Richard’s name was carved above the central crypt.

The hidden archive had been broken open.

Shelves stood empty.

On the floor lay burned pages and shattered computer drives.

Moreno searched the debris.

“He destroyed it.”

Mark noticed a small metal box beneath a fallen shelf.

It contained a letter and a key card.

The letter was addressed to Anna.

Richard had anticipated Gerald might find the mausoleum.

The true archive had been moved to a bank vault under the name Lillian Harrison.

Mark read the final line.

Lillian is not Leo’s twin.

She is the name I gave the first Harrison child after Elise disappeared.

There had been another girl before Elise.

Mark stared at the words.

One biological child created through Bellweather.

One adopted child hidden under a false identity.

One daughter somewhere in Grayhaven.

The family history was becoming more complicated with every answer.

A sound came from outside.

Moreno raised her weapon.

A woman stepped into the mausoleum.

It was Celia Whitmore, Vanessa’s closest friend from the garden party.

Her diamond earrings were gone, and fear had replaced her socialite confidence.

“I know where Gerald took the ledger,” she said.

“Why should we trust you?” Mark asked.

“Because Vanessa is going to kill me.”

“What do you know?”

Celia looked over her shoulder.

“She didn’t marry you only for the trust.”

“Then why?”

Celia handed him a photograph.

It showed Vanessa as a teenage girl standing beside Anna.

They were holding hands.

“Vanessa believed Anna belonged to her,” Celia said. “And she has spent six years punishing everyone Anna loved.”
