Chapter 7 - The Night the Hospital Went Dark

The power failure lasted seven seconds.

It was long enough.

Emergency lights flickered on, filling the intensive care unit with dim red illumination. Backup generators should have restored the monitors immediately, but Daniel’s screen remained black.

Piper reached for his neck.

No pulse.

“Code blue!”

The guard opened the door.

Renata shouted into her radio.

Adrian ran in with a crash cart.

Piper began compressions.

Daniel’s IV line was disconnected.

Not pulled loose.

Cut.

Blood spread across the sheet.

“Someone was in here,” Piper said.

“That’s impossible,” the guard replied. “I was at the door.”

“Then they were already inside.”

Adrian checked Daniel’s pupils.

“Push epinephrine.”

A nurse complied.

Renata searched the bathroom, cabinet, and ceiling access panel.

The room had no other exit.

Piper noticed moisture on the floor beside the bed.

One small shoe print.

Not from a child.

From someone wearing a medical cover over a narrow shoe.

She looked at the supply cabinet.

The lower door was open.

Inside were folded blankets and disposable gowns.

One blanket moved.

Renata drew her weapon.

“Come out.”

No response.

She pulled the blanket away.

The cabinet was empty.

But the back panel had been removed.

Behind it was a maintenance shaft.

Someone had entered before the outage, waited inside the wall, then cut Daniel’s line during the darkness.

Piper continued CPR.

“Daniel, don’t do this.”

Adrian looked at the monitor as power returned.

A flat line.

They shocked him.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

After thirty-two minutes, Adrian stopped.

Piper continued compressions.

“Piper.”

She did not stop.

“Piper.”

“He came back once.”

“He lost too much blood.”

“Get more.”

“We gave him everything.”

She pressed harder.

Adrian caught her wrists.

“He’s gone.”

Piper stared at Daniel’s face.

Six months earlier, he had vanished before giving her the name of the person who entered Isabel’s room.

Now he had returned only to die before revealing the full truth.

Or so the killer intended.

Piper pulled free from Adrian and checked Daniel’s mouth.

“What are you doing?”

“He knew they would come.”

She opened his jaw.

A small plastic capsule had been hidden behind his back molar.

Renata took it with forceps.

Inside was a micro-storage card.

Daniel had protected the evidence until death.

Two hours later, Renata’s cybercrime team opened the card on an isolated computer.

The files were encrypted, but one video was accessible.

Daniel appeared on the screen.

He looked thinner than Piper remembered. The background was dark.

“If you are seeing this, I am probably dead.”

Piper sat beside Renata and Adrian.

Daniel continued.

“Project Lazarus began as an emergency survival study. Malcolm Vane believed the human brain could be preserved after clinical death through rapid cooling, targeted drugs, and electrical stimulation.”

Images appeared.

Early laboratory records.

Animal trials.

Then human charts.

“After Thomas Hale survived prolonged submersion, Vane believed he had found a genetic marker associated with resistance to oxygen deprivation.”

Piper’s throat tightened.

“Thomas was not the first subject,” Daniel said. “But he was the first adult to regain full neurological function.”

A list of patient codes appeared.

“Vane spent years searching for others with the same marker. He tested emergency patients without consent. Most died. Some survived with severe complications.”

The video changed.

A photograph of a young woman.

Then a firefighter.

Then a little girl.

“The survivors became the Lazarus cohort.”

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“Piper, your father discovered the truth. He tried to expose them. They killed him.”

Adrian looked at Piper.

She did not move.

“Years later,” Daniel continued, “Mara Vane restarted the program. She believed the marker might run in families.”

A photograph of Piper appeared.

Taken during medical school.

“They watched Thomas Hale’s children.”

Then photographs of Marcus.

Celeste.

Piper.

“They ruled out Marcus and Celeste.”

The next image showed Piper performing surgery.

“But you carried the marker.”

Piper’s skin went cold.

“Mara needed a physician with the genetic trait. Someone capable of understanding the protocol and performing the procedures. Someone she could control through professional ruin.”

The video showed Isabel Reyes.

“Isabel was selected because she carried a related marker. Her accident was not planned, but her admission created an opportunity. Mara ordered the unauthorized drug after surgery to induce cardiac arrest.”

Piper whispered, “Why?”

“To test whether Piper could recover her,” Daniel said from the recording, as if answering.

The video displayed medication logs.

Piper’s login had been copied.

The fatal dosage appeared under her name.

“Mara expected Piper to revive Isabel using the Lazarus protocol. But Piper did not know the protocol existed. Isabel died.”

Adrian’s hands curled into fists.

Daniel continued.

“I tried to tell Piper. Mara’s people took me before I could meet her. They staged my death and moved me between private facilities.”

The image flickered.

“There are living patients hidden beneath St. Catherine’s. Some have been declared dead. Some have been kept in induced comas for years.”

A map appeared.

The same underground section Thomas had marked.

“Malcolm Vane may still be alive. I never saw his body. Mara refers to someone as the Founder.”

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

“If they find Piper, they will not kill her immediately. They need her.”

The recording paused.

A final line of text appeared.

LOCKER 314. UNION STATION. CHICAGO.

Renata looked at the key recovered beneath Daniel’s chair.

314.

Adrian turned to Piper.

“You’re not going.”

“I am.”

“No.”

“You heard him.”

“I heard that a criminal medical network has been tracking your family for years.”

“And locker 314 may contain the evidence.”

“It may contain a bomb.”

“Then we send a team.”

Renata nodded.

“That is what we’re doing.”

Piper stood.

“When?”

“Now.”

“I’m coming.”

Renata shook her head.

“You are the target.”

“That is exactly why I may recognize what’s inside.”

Adrian stepped in front of her.

“You are emotionally compromised.”

Piper stared at him.

“Daniel died in my hands.”

“Yes.”

“My father was murdered.”

“Probably.”

“A child died because someone used my credentials.”

“Yes.”

“And you want me to sit in a protected room while other people interpret the evidence?”

“I want you alive.”

Piper’s voice softened.

“That may no longer be the safest option.”

Before Adrian could answer, Piper’s phone vibrated.

A video call.

Unknown number.

She answered.

The screen showed Noah asleep in his hospital bed.

Then the camera shifted.

A figure in black stood just outside the glass wall of his room.

The voice was distorted.

“Locker 314 belongs to us.”

Piper ran.
