Chapter 15 - The Man Who Came Back From the Dead

Piper stared at the photograph until the screen blurred.

“No,” she whispered.

Adrian came closer.

“What is it?”

She handed him the phone.

He looked at the image.

His face drained of color.

“That can’t be Thomas.”

“It looks like him.”

“He would be sixty-two.”

“The man in the car could be that age.”

“Your father died eight years ago.”

“So did Malcolm.”

Adrian enlarged the photograph.

The image was grainy, captured through the windshield of a vehicle passing beneath a traffic camera.

Malcolm sat in front.

The older man sat behind him.

His left hand rested against the window.

On one finger was Thomas’s wedding band.

Piper remembered the ring.

Simple gold, scratched from years of construction work.

After the funeral, Evelyn had said the hospital had lost it.

Piper called Renata.

“Where was the camera?”

“Interstate Fifty-Seven, southbound.”

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“Vehicle?”

“Stolen plates. We lost it after the next exit.”

“The passenger is my father.”

“We’re comparing facial records.”

“He is wearing my father’s ring.”

“Piper, I need you to prepare for the possibility that the image was staged.”

“Mara staged deaths. Malcolm staged his own. Daniel was declared dead while imprisoned. Forty-three living patients were hidden beneath a hospital.”

“I know.”

“Then do not tell me this is impossible.”

“I’m telling you the person wants you to react.”

Piper looked at Noah.

He was awake now, eating pancakes while Marcus adjusted the television.

The child had said a man told him Grandpa was alive.

“What did Noah see while he was underground?” Piper asked.

“We interviewed him carefully. He remembers voices, a bright room, and an older man.”

“What did the man say?”

“That everybody lied.”

“Anything else?”

Renata hesitated.

“Piper.”

“What else?”

“He said the man called himself Thomas.”

Piper closed her eyes.

Marcus heard.

He stood from Noah’s bedside.

“Dad?”

Piper ended the call.

Marcus crossed the room.

“What did she say?”

Piper showed him the photograph.

He took the phone with both hands.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he sat down hard.

“That’s him.”

“You’re sure?”

“I worked beside Dad every summer. That’s his hand.”

Adrian studied Marcus.

“His hand?”

“The little finger was bent after a nail-gun accident. Look.”

The man’s left little finger curved inward.

Thomas had the same injury.

Evelyn was brought to the room.

When she saw the image, she screamed.

Not in surprise.

In recognition.

Piper caught her before she fell.

Evelyn gripped her arm.

“He found me.”

“Who?”

“Thomas.”

“You knew he might be alive?”

“No.”

“You said he found you.”

Evelyn began shaking.

“The night before the reunion, I received a call.”

Piper’s voice became dangerously calm.

“You received a call from Dad?”

“A man said he was Thomas.”

“What did he say?”

“He asked whether you were coming to the lake.”

“And you said yes.”

“I thought it was a cruel trick.”

“You told no one.”

“I was afraid.”

Marcus turned away in disbelief.

Piper held Evelyn’s shoulders.

“What exactly did he say?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“He said Noah would bring you home.”

The room fell silent.

Noah looked up from his pancakes.

“Grandpa said that too.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Piper moved to the bed.

“When did he say it?”

“In the white room.”

“Did you see his face?”

Noah nodded.

“Did he look like the man in the picture?”

Noah studied the phone.

“Yes.”

Marcus whispered, “Dad was underground.”

Piper asked, “Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

“Did he stop your heart?”

Noah frowned.

“The lady did.”

“Mara?”

“The lady with the scar.”

“What did Grandpa do?”

“He told her to wait.”

“For what?”

Noah looked at Piper.

“For you.”

A nurse entered to check his medication.

Piper stood and moved into the corridor.

She needed air.

She needed distance.

She needed one fact she could trust.

Adrian followed.

“If Thomas is alive, he may not be the man you remember.”

“He was held by Vane.”

“For years, perhaps.”

“He may have been part of the project.”

“He was the first successful subject.”

Piper looked at him.

“Or the first successful experiment.”

Renata arrived with two federal agents.

“We confirmed the facial match,” she said.

Piper’s pulse quickened.

“How strong?”

“Ninety-four percent.”

Marcus stepped into the corridor.

“That’s him.”

Renata nodded.

“We also recovered a recording from the Bellweather servers.”

“What recording?”

“Thomas Hale, dated three weeks after his reported death.”

Evelyn appeared in the doorway behind Marcus.

Renata played the file.

Thomas sat in a white room.

He looked injured but alive.

He spoke directly to the camera.

“My name is Thomas Hale. Malcolm Vane saved my life twice.”

Piper felt cold.

Thomas continued.

“The first time, he pulled me back from the lake. The second time, he pulled me back after the construction site.”

Marcus gripped the wall.

The construction accident had not killed Thomas.

It had returned him to Lazarus.

“I allowed my family to believe I was dead because they were being watched,” Thomas said. “I believed distance would protect them.”

Piper looked at Adrian.

The words sounded painfully familiar.

Thomas continued.

“I was wrong.”

His face tightened.

“Piper carries the strongest expression of the marker. She is capable of completing the work, but she must choose freely.”

Piper whispered, “I will never choose it.”

On the video, Thomas looked directly into the camera.

“If you force her, she will destroy everything.”

A door opened behind him.

Malcolm entered the room.

Thomas turned.

The recording ended.

Renata stopped the playback.

“There’s more,” she said.

She opened another file.

A list of locations appeared.

Chicago.

Bellweather.

Boston.

Denver.

London.

Prague.

Bangkok.

Each location was connected to patient numbers.

Adrian stared.

“Lazarus is international.”

Renata nodded.

“The underground facility was only one branch.”

Piper looked at the final location.

A secure medical complex outside New Orleans.

Beside it was a recent date.

Tomorrow.

“What happens there?” she asked.

“We don’t know.”

A message appeared on Renata’s secure tablet.

Sender unknown.

It contained coordinates and a video attachment.

Piper played it.

Thomas Hale stood in a dim room.

He was older, thinner, and more exhausted than the father she remembered.

But he was alive.

He looked into the camera.

“Piper.”

Her knees nearly failed.

His voice was the same.

Warm.

Steady.

The voice that had once told her not to be afraid of storms.

“I know you believe Malcolm took me,” Thomas said. “I know you believe Mara forced me to help them.”

He paused.

“But the truth is more dangerous.”

Behind him, rows of medical pods filled a vast chamber.

Inside each pod lay a child.

Some appeared asleep.

Others were connected to machines.

Thomas stepped closer to the camera.

“Malcolm did not create Lazarus.”

Piper stopped breathing.

Thomas continued.

“He found it.”

A warning alarm sounded in the background.

Thomas looked over his shoulder.

Then back at the camera.

“If you want Noah to remain safe, do not trust the federal team.”

Renata stiffened.

The two agents beside her reached for their weapons.

Thomas spoke faster.

“Do not trust Adrian.”

Piper turned toward Adrian.

His face showed shock.

“And whatever you do,” Thomas said, “do not let them take you to New Orleans.”

The video shook.

A gunshot sounded.

Thomas fell out of frame.

The image went black.

At the same moment, one of the federal agents drew his weapon and aimed at Piper.

Adrian pushed her down.

The first shot shattered the window behind them.

Renata fired.

The corridor erupted into screams.

Marcus dragged Noah’s bed away from the doorway while Evelyn dropped to the floor.

The second federal agent locked the emergency doors.

Red lights flashed.

A hospital announcement ordered everyone to shelter in place.

Piper crawled behind the nurses’ station.

Adrian lay beside her, blood spreading across his shoulder.

“Are you hit?” she asked.

“It went through.”

Renata exchanged fire with the armed agents.

One agent shouted into a radio.

“L-02 confirmed. Extraction underway.”

Piper heard the code.

Subject L-02.

Her childhood designation.

The elevator doors at the end of the corridor opened.

Six people in black tactical uniforms stepped out.

They were not police.

They were not hospital security.

Each carried the silver serpent symbol on the shoulder.

The lead figure removed his helmet.

Piper recognized Daniel Voss.

Alive again.

He looked directly at her.

May you like

“Dr. Hale,” he said, “your father is waiting.”

Then the hospital lights went out.
