Chapter 9 - Earning a Place
Matthew did not move into Anne’s apartment.
He did not arrive with expensive gifts or demand to be called Dad.
He began with Tuesday afternoons.
Every Tuesday, he met Sarah at the community library. They read books, drew pictures, and repaired dolls together. His stitching was still terrible.
Anne watched carefully.
Trust returned slowly, not because Matthew promised he had changed, but because he kept appearing when he said he would.
He attended Sarah’s school performance and sat in the back row. He brought Anne groceries during her recovery but left them with Mrs. Delgado when Anne needed space. He answered every difficult question without blaming Victor for all his own failures.
“I stopped searching,” he admitted one evening. “That part belongs to me.”
Anne appreciated the honesty more than any apology.
A DNA test confirmed what they already knew.
Matthew was Sarah’s father.
Sarah decided to call him Matthew for another month. Then, while he was helping her build a cardboard hospital for her dolls, she accidentally called him Dad.
Both adults froze.
Sarah looked embarrassed.
“Can I take it back?”
Matthew’s eyes filled with tears.
“You never have to say it again unless you want to.”
Sarah considered this.
“I think I want to.”
Anne turned away to hide her smile.
Matthew did not ask Anne to restore the relationship they had lost. Instead, they built a new one around the people they had become.
