Chapter 5 - Victor’s Final Threat
Victor was waiting outside the room.
“You have heard one side of a complicated situation,” he said.
Matthew closed the door behind him.
“You forged Anne’s signature.”
Victor remained calm. “I protected you.”
“You stole twelve years from me and five years from my daughter.”
Victor glanced toward Sarah, who sat across the hallway holding the cardboard box.
“You do not know that child is yours.”
Matthew stepped between them.
“You knew Anne was pregnant.”
“I knew she claimed to be pregnant.”
“You threatened her mother’s treatment.”
“I prevented a desperate young woman from trapping you.”
Matthew had spent his life watching people surrender when Victor spoke with that cold certainty. Employees apologized for his mistakes. Board members changed their votes. Family members learned to call control a form of protection.
Matthew had surrendered too.
Not this time.
He removed the hospital board identification card from his pocket and placed it in Victor’s hand.
“You once told me the Sullivan name was the most valuable thing I would ever own.”
“It is.”
“No. It is the thing you used to excuse every cruel decision you made.”
Victor’s face tightened.
“If you fund this surgery against the board’s decision, I will remove you from the company and freeze every trust connected to your name.”
“Do it.”
“You will lose everything.”
Matthew looked at Sarah.
The child was repairing a loose ribbon on one of her dolls, unaware that a fortune was being placed against her life.
“I already lost something more important.”
Victor turned to the attorneys.
“Record that my son has voluntarily resigned from all executive authority.”
Matthew nodded.
“Also record that I am requesting an independent investigation into the foundation’s billing system, including Anne Miller’s canceled insurance policy.”
