THE BLUE EVIDENCE FOLDER / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The Message Beneath the Floor

Police searched Willowmere Road again.

Adrian had delayed renovations, so the kitchen remained almost exactly as the Vale family had left it. Elias checked the speakers, electrical outlets, cabinets, and walls.

Nothing appeared dangerous.

Then Claire noticed scratches along the tile beneath the old dining table.

The marks formed a narrow rectangle.

Workers lifted the flooring.

Underneath was a sealed compartment containing a microphone control unit, two flash drives, and a small remote receiver.

The first flash drive held hundreds of audio files.

The recordings included Claire’s conversations during earlier visits, arguments with Gloria, and discussions between the Vale family after she left.

Nathan had labeled selected sentences.

Claire says she wants money.

Claire admits emotional instability.

Claire threatens family.

Claire agrees to private settlement.

The phrases were taken out of context.

Some had been rearranged.

Others were synthetic combinations created from Claire’s voice.

The second flash drive contained video templates. A digital version of Claire sat at a desk and appeared to authorize a $400,000 transfer.

The image was imperfect, but with lower-quality bank verification, it might pass.

“They planned multiple paths,” Hale said. “Electronic fraud first. Direct pressure if that failed.”

Elias examined the remote receiver.

“This system was activated recently.”

“By whom?” Adrian asked.

“The signal came from close range. Possibly a vehicle outside.”

The house became the center of a surveillance operation. Hale wanted to leave the hidden equipment in place and monitor anyone who returned to access it.

Claire agreed.

Adrian remained cautious.

“They know we found Nathan’s office. Why would they risk entering?”

“Because something else is hidden here,” Claire said.

Thomas had chosen the kitchen wall for his folder. Nathan had used the kitchen floor for recordings. The room had become a shared battlefield without Claire ever realizing it.

Daniel searched the blue folder again.

One of Thomas’s property diagrams showed measurements of the kitchen.

At first, they appeared to be renovation notes. But the dimensions did not match the current room.

An additional space existed behind the pantry.

Elias removed the shelving and discovered a narrow door concealed beneath layers of paint.

Behind it was a small storage room.

The room was empty except for a desk and a wall covered in pinholes where documents had once been attached.

On the desk lay an old answering machine.

Claire pressed play.

Thomas’s voice filled the room.

“Claire, if you are hearing this, I was unable to complete the report.”

She covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“Raymond discovered I was speaking with victims. He believes the evidence concerns only the Willowmere Avenue property, but the records show a larger network. Nathan is not the person in control.”

Claire looked at Hale.

Thomas coughed on the recording, then resumed.

“Raymond receives instructions through someone using the name Director. I have not identified that person. The blue folders are numbered. Eleanor Price was file 7. Adrian Cole’s mother may have been file 3.”

Adrian stepped closer to the machine.

Thomas continued.

“Our family house was selected as file 12. They intended to create a false inherited claim after my death. I changed the trust to protect Claire, but they may still attempt to force a settlement.”

The message contained a pause.

Then Thomas spoke more quietly.

“Raymond is dangerous when cornered, but Gloria is more involved than she appears. Lauren gathers information. Nathan prepares documents. The Director chooses targets.”

The recording ended abruptly.

Hale played it again, hoping for more.

Nothing followed.

Claire stood inside the hidden room, surrounded by the silence Thomas had left behind.

“He knew they would come after me.”

“He tried to protect you,” Adrian said.

“He should have told me.”

“He may have believed silence protected you longer.”

Claire looked at the empty wall.

The folders had once been here.

Someone removed them before the family left.

Hale examined the dust patterns.

“Large boxes stood against this wall recently.”

“Raymond moved them,” Claire said.

“Possibly.”

Elias found tire marks near the service entrance. Security footage from the removal day showed a white moving truck arriving while Claire was meeting Daniel.

The company logo was fake.

Traffic cameras traced the truck to an industrial district before losing it.

A search of warehouses owned by Vale Strategic Holdings produced nothing.

Then Michael Price called Claire.

He had found a storage receipt among Eleanor’s papers.

The storage company still operated.

The unit number was 12.

Hale obtained a warrant.

Inside the unit stood thirteen metal cabinets.

Each cabinet contained blue folders.

The twelfth cabinet was empty.

On its door, someone had taped a photograph of Claire.
