Chapter 12 - The Voice in the Darkness
The kitchen disappeared into darkness.
Gloria shouted.
Raymond knocked over a chair while reaching for Claire. Lauren cried out near the table.
Then the security speaker activated.
A distorted voice filled the room.
“Raymond, the arrangement has ended.”
Raymond froze.
Even without seeing his face, Claire heard the fear in his breathing.
“Director?”
“You failed to obtain the transfer.”
“The police interrupted us.”
“You invited them by trusting your daughter.”
Lauren moved toward Claire’s voice.
The speaker continued.
“Destroy cabinet 12. Leave through the utility tunnel. Gloria and Lauren are no longer necessary.”
Gloria gasped.
“What does that mean?”
Raymond did not answer.
A red emergency light activated near the floor. In its dim glow, Claire saw him holding a small device.
His thumb hovered over a switch.
Claire remembered the burned folders in Nathan’s office.
A thermal trigger.
Raymond intended to destroy the blue folder.
Lauren saw it too.
She lunged toward him.
Raymond pushed her aside. She struck the overturned chair and fell onto her hands, uninjured but stunned.
Claire seized the folder and pulled it away.
Gloria raised the bat.
Before she could swing, the kitchen door burst open.
Police officers flooded the room.
“Drop it!”
Gloria lowered the bat.
Raymond ran toward the pantry.
Hale followed.
Behind the shelving, the hidden door stood open. Raymond entered the narrow room and pulled at a floor panel revealing the utility tunnel.
Hale caught him before he could descend.
Raymond struggled briefly, then stopped when another officer blocked the tunnel exit.
In the kitchen, Lauren sat against the cabinet while an officer secured her hands. Gloria continued shouting that the house belonged to the family.
Claire remained beside the overturned chair with the folder against her chest.
Adrian entered with two officers after the scene was declared secure.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
The distorted voice no longer came through the speaker.
Elias had been in custody when it activated.
The Director was someone else.
Detective Hale returned with Raymond in handcuffs.
“Where is Nathan Crowe?” Hale asked.
Raymond said nothing.
Hale picked up the folder.
He read the forged medical records, transfer documents, and operational notes.
Then he reached the printed group messages.
The messages showed Lauren arranging bank access, Gloria planning how to frighten Claire, and Raymond discussing transportation to the remote branch.
A final conversation referred to a second objective.
Once transfer completes, move the witness to Site W.
Hale looked at Raymond.
“What is Site W?”
Raymond remained silent.
Claire opened the folder wider.
A photograph slipped onto the floor.
It showed Raymond beside an unidentified man in a room lined with blue folders.
Raymond’s face changed.
Lauren saw the photograph.
“I’ve seen that room,” she whispered.
Hale turned toward her.
“Where?”
“My father took me there once. He told me to wait in the car, but I followed him inside.”
“Who was the other man?”
“I don’t know his name.”
“Where is the building?”
Lauren looked at Raymond.
He shook his head.
Gloria shouted, “Do not say anything.”
Lauren began to cry.
“He said Site W was where they kept people until they signed.”
The room went silent.
Hale read the final message again.
“This wasn’t only a burglary,” he said. “The forged signature connects all three of you to a plan involving unlawful detention and organized property fraud.”
Lauren suddenly lunged toward the folder.
An officer stopped her.
“I wasn’t trying to destroy it,” she said. “There’s another page.”
Claire checked the pocket inside the back cover.
It was empty.
