THE BLUE BEAD / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - Nora's Recording)

Nora's hospital room overlooked the city.

Ethan entered through a service corridor to avoid reporters.

Detective Hale came with him.

Nora looked smaller than Ethan remembered.

Bruising covered one side of her face.

Her left arm was immobilized.

But her eyes were clear.

When she saw Ethan, anger flashed through them.

"How is Clara?"

"Safe."

"Safe now?"

The question landed exactly as Nora intended.

Ethan accepted it.

"Yes."

"Did you find the bracelet?"

"We did."

Nora closed her eyes.

"Thank God."

Ethan sat beside the bed.

"I should have listened."

"Yes."

No comfort.

No easy forgiveness.

He respected her for that.

"I need to know everything."

Nora told him.

The bruised wrist.

The wall punishment.

Button disappearing.

Clara's fear.

The camera.

The deleted email.

Then Ethan asked the question he had been dreading.

"What did the camera record?"

Nora looked toward Detective Hale.

"Some of it is on my cloud account."

"Some?"

"I made two physical copies."

"Where?"

"One was in my office."

"And the other?"

Nora hesitated.

"I mailed it."

"To whom?"

"You."

Ethan stared.

"When?"

"The morning of the crash."

"Where?"

"Your home address. Signature required."

Ethan turned to Detective Hale.

"No package arrived."

Hale was already calling someone.

Nora continued.

"The footage is worse than what I described over the phone."

Ethan forced himself to ask.

"How much worse?"

"Victoria tells Clara that if she keeps asking for you, you'll stop coming home."

His throat tightened.

"She says Rebecca left because Clara cried too much."

Ethan went completely still.

Nora's voice softened.

"I'm sorry."

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Rebecca had spent the final months of her life terrified that Clara would forget her.

Ethan had promised she would not.

Victoria had used that dead mother's absence as a weapon against their child.

"What else?"

Nora looked at him.

"Do you really want to hear it now?"

"Yes."

"She makes Clara apologize to a photograph of Victoria."

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

"She placed a framed engagement photo on a table. When Clara called her Victoria instead of Mommy, she made Clara stand in front of it and apologize."

Detective Hale's jaw tightened.

"Any physical abuse?"

"Nothing severe on the footage I saw. Grabbing. Pulling. Forcing her into a chair. But the emotional abuse is constant."

Ethan looked at the floor.

Constant.

The word was worse than an isolated event.

It meant a world had existed inside his own home that he never saw.

Nora reached toward the bedside table.

"There is one more thing."

She handed Detective Hale a small storage key.

"My office building. Locker 218."

"What's inside?"

"Notes. Copies of Clara's therapy records. And something Victoria didn't know I had."

Ethan looked at her.

"What?"

"A recording from our last conversation."

Nora had begun recording after Victoria accused her of interfering.

In the audio, Victoria spoke with no child present.

Her voice was calm.

Clara will adapt.

Nora responded, She is afraid of you.

Good. Fear creates boundaries.

That isn't discipline.

It works.

Nora then asked what would happen if Ethan disagreed.

Victoria laughed.

Ethan sees what I allow him to see.

The recording continued.

The final sentence was the one that silenced everyone in the hospital room.

By the time we are married, Clara will understand that I decide what she tells him.

Ethan stood.

"I want a copy."

"You'll get one."

Nora watched him.

"Do not use this only to destroy Victoria."

He frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Use it to understand Clara."

Ethan looked toward the window.

"I understand."

"No."

Nora's voice became firmer.

"You understand what Victoria did. You do not understand what Clara learned from it."

Ethan turned back.

"What did she learn?"

"That adults can make reality disappear."

He said nothing.

"Victoria told staff you approved punishments. She told Clara you wanted her disciplined. She told you Clara was having tantrums. Every person around that child received a different version of reality."

Nora's eyes filled.

"Clara learned that telling the truth doesn't guarantee anyone believes you."

The words cut deeper than accusation.

"What do I do?"

"Believe her now."

"I do."

"Not only when there is evidence."

Ethan understood.

The bracelet mattered.

The recordings mattered.

The notebook mattered.

But Clara should never have needed proof.

Before leaving, Ethan stopped at the door.

"Nora."

She looked at him.

"Thank you for trying."

Nora gave a tired nod.

"Make sure it was worth it."

Outside the hospital, Detective Hale received a message.

The package Nora mailed had been signed for.

Not by Ethan.

Not by Maria.

Not by any member of the estate staff.

The signature belonged to a temporary courier subcontractor.

Travis Kern.

The same man now missing.

And security footage showed something else.

After collecting the package, Travis had driven directly to Victoria Sterling's private apartment.
