Chapter 2 - The Bracelet Lady)

The bracelet had not originally contained a camera.
Ethan remembered that correctly.
The hidden lens had been added twelve days earlier by a woman named Nora Hale.
Nora was not a spy.
She was Clara's temporary occupational therapist.
After Rebecca's death, Clara developed a habit of twisting her hands whenever anxious. Most children eventually outgrew such behaviors, but Ethan wanted professional guidance rather than assumptions.
Nora visited twice each week.
Victoria disliked her almost immediately.
"She encourages Clara to complain," Victoria told Ethan.
"She's helping her communicate."
"She asks leading questions."
"She's a licensed therapist."
Victoria smiled tightly.
"Credentials do not make people infallible."
The real problem began when Nora noticed bruising on Clara's wrist.
It was small.
Faint.
Easy to explain.
"What happened there, sweetheart?" Nora asked during a session.
Clara pulled down her sleeve.
"Door."
"What door?"
Clara glanced toward the hallway.
Victoria was passing.
Clara became silent.
Nora did not push.
Children were unreliable narrators when frightened, but fear itself was information.
She documented the mark.
Two days later, Clara arrived for therapy without Button.
"Where's your rabbit?"
"Victoria put him in jail."
Nora smiled gently.
"What does jail mean?"
"The closet."
"Why?"
"I cried."
Nora's smile disappeared.
After the session she spoke privately with Victoria.
"Clara appears anxious."
"Her mother died."
"Her anxiety increases when you enter the room."
Victoria's eyes cooled.
"Are you accusing me of something?"
"I'm telling you what I'm observing."
"Perhaps you should observe less dramatically."
Nora contacted Ethan.
He was in Boston.
The call lasted four minutes.
"I think you should pay closer attention to household discipline," she said.
Ethan frowned.
"Has Victoria hurt her?"
"I don't have evidence of that."
"Then what exactly are you saying?"
"I'm saying Clara's behavior changes around her."
Ethan was exhausted.
Three negotiations had collapsed that week.
He made a mistake he would despise later.
He chose the interpretation that required the least disruption.
"Victoria is stricter than I am."
"Strict and frightening are different."
"I appreciate the concern."
Nora heard the dismissal.
"So do I."
The next session, Nora arrived carrying Clara's repaired bracelet.
Clara had broken the string several days earlier.
"I fixed your ocean bracelet."
Clara smiled for the first time that afternoon.
Nora crouched beside her.
One bead was now black.
"That one's special."
Clara touched it.
"Why?"
"It helps remember things."
That explanation was all Nora offered.
She had purchased a tiny consumer safety camera after speaking with a former colleague specializing in child protection.
Legally, she was entering dangerous territory.
Ethically, she felt she was already standing in one.
Nora did not intend to spy indefinitely.
She wanted one session.
One afternoon.
Enough to learn whether her instincts were wrong.
Before leaving, she whispered to Clara.
"Keep your bracelet on today."
"Victoria says blue is baby."
"Blue is beautiful."
Clara smiled.
"Don't tell Victoria the black bead is special, okay?"
"Okay."
Nora regretted those words almost immediately.
Asking a child to keep secrets from an adult could itself be harmful.
But by then she had seen too much fear to do nothing.
The camera recorded for ninety minutes before its battery died.
Nora retrieved the bracelet during the following session and copied the footage.
Then she sat alone in her car and watched.
At first there was nothing alarming.
Clara coloring.
Victoria answering a phone call.
Kitchen sounds.
Then Clara dropped a crayon.
Victoria told her to pick it up.
Clara did.
Victoria told her to sit straight.
Clara tried.
Then came the sentence that made Nora stop the video.
"You have to learn that this is my house too now."
Clara said, "It's Daddy's house."
Victoria leaned closer.
"It will be mine."
Nora continued watching.
Victoria made Clara stand facing a wall because she asked for her father.
Twenty two minutes.
A three year old.
Standing against a wall.
When Clara turned around, Victoria reset the timer.
Nora watched until her hands shook.
She copied the file onto two encrypted drives.
Then she called Ethan again.
His assistant answered.
"Mr. Caldwell is in a board session."
"This is urgent."
"Can you provide a subject?"
"His daughter."
There was silence.
"I'll alert him."
Ethan called thirty one minutes later.
Nora began explaining.
Then the call cut out.
She tried again.
No answer.
Five minutes later, Victoria called.
Nora stared at the screen.
She did not answer.
A message followed.
Please discontinue all sessions with Clara. Your services are no longer required.
Nora called Ethan's assistant.
The assistant said Victoria had already informed the office that Ethan approved the change.
Nora knew that was a lie.
She drove directly to the Caldwell estate.
The guard at the gate refused entry.
"Ms. Sterling removed your authorization."
"I need to speak to Mr. Caldwell."
"He's not here."
"Then Maria."
"No household staff are available."
Nora sat in her car outside the gates for forty minutes.
Finally she sent Ethan an encrypted email containing a short excerpt.
The message never reached him.
Someone inside Caldwell Holdings deleted it before it appeared in his inbox.
Nora discovered that two days later.
And by then, Clara was no longer wearing the bracelet.
Victoria had found the black bead.
May you like
But she had not destroyed it.
She had something far more useful in mind.
