Chapter 7 - The Wedding That Continued

The police wanted the ballroom evacuated.

Claire refused.

She had no authority over the investigation, but she understood panic. Sending hundreds of guests into the hotel lobby would create confusion, contaminate possible evidence, and give Julian more opportunities to escape.

The police commander reluctantly agreed to keep the guests inside while officers secured the elevators and exits.

Theodore addressed the ballroom from the stage.

He said there had been a serious security incident on an upper floor. He asked everyone to remain calm and cooperate.

No one believed it was minor.

Whispers spread beneath the chandeliers.

Claire entered through a side door with Noah beside her. She had covered his bloody shirt with Daniel’s tuxedo jacket. The sleeves extended beyond his hands.

Guests stared.

Noah gripped Claire’s fingers.

“Where is my dad?”

“Adrian is at the hospital.”

“He isn’t my dad.”

Claire crouched so they were eye level.

“He loves you like one.”

Noah looked toward Vanessa, who was being escorted across the lobby behind glass doors.

“She said Uncle Adrian stole me.”

“What do you remember?”

“My father put me in a car with Uncle Adrian. He said we were playing a game. He said I had to use a different last name until he came back.”

“How old were you?”

“Three.”

“Do you remember your father’s face?”

Noah nodded.

“Sometimes.”

Daniel joined them.

The right shoulder of his tuxedo was torn from the struggle. Blood from a cut above his eyebrow marked his cheek.

“The hospital called,” he said. “Adrian survived surgery.”

Noah closed his eyes in relief.

“He is still unconscious,” Daniel added gently, “but the doctors are hopeful.”

A detective approached.

“Mr. Mercer, we need to locate Julian Cross.”

Daniel looked toward the stage.

“My father’s security team is checking the building.”

“We found Mr. Cross’s phone in the parking garage.”

“Did he leave?”

“No vehicle exited under his name.”

Claire scanned the tables.

Julian had spent years beside Daniel. He knew the hotel’s hidden passages, security procedures, and emergency plans. He might still be among them.

The detective turned to Claire.

“We also found an injured man in Room 3308.”

Claire’s pulse quickened.

“Who?”

“He had no identification. He was conscious for less than a minute. He asked for you.”

“Me?”

“He said your father sent him.”

They followed the detective to a private lounge beside the ballroom.

A paramedic treated an elderly man with gray hair and a bruised face. Claire recognized him after several seconds.

“Mr. Harlan?”

Samuel Harlan had been her father’s private investigator. He disappeared from Claire’s life after Robert Whitmore died.

He opened his eyes.

“You look like him,” he said.

“What happened?”

“Julian found me before I reached you.”

“You sent the message this morning.”

“Yes.”

“And the photograph?”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

“Because Noah returned.”

Claire sat beside him.

“Returned from where?”

Harlan looked at Daniel.

“Your mother’s list included seven children. Noah is the last one still unaccounted for.”

Daniel stiffened.

“Vanessa said my name was on the first file.”

Harlan’s silence confirmed it.

“Am I one of the Legacies?”

“No,” Harlan said. “You were the reason the program began.”

Theodore entered the room.

“Harlan, don’t.”

“You kept the truth buried long enough.”

Daniel looked between them.

“What happened to me?”

Harlan struggled upright.

“Margaret gave birth to a son at Saint Catherine’s Hospital thirty-four years ago.”

“That was me.”

“No.”

The word struck harder than a blow.

Harlan continued.

“Her child was born with a severe heart defect. Doctors attempted emergency surgery. The infant died before dawn.”

Daniel turned toward Theodore.

“No.”

Theodore’s eyes filled.

“I saw you in the nursery.”

“You saw a child.”

“You were my son.”

“You knew?”

“Not at first.”

Daniel backed away.

Claire reached for him, but he did not seem to see her.

Harlan spoke quietly.

“The Circle replaced Margaret’s baby with another newborn. A child whose mother had died and whose father had powerful enemies.”

“Who was my biological father?”

“I never found proof.”

“Did Margaret know?”

“She discovered the truth when you were twelve.”

“The year she died.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at the bronze charm.

“The boy in the recording was me.”

Harlan nodded.

Claire understood what Margaret meant.

My son must never know what was done in his name.

Daniel stared at Theodore.

“You built your empire while they placed a stolen child in your home.”

Theodore’s voice broke.

“You are my son.”

“Then tell me whose child I was.”

May you like

Before Theodore could answer, all the ballroom lights went out.

In the darkness, a single gunshot sounded.
