Chapter 5 - The Woman in Burgundy

Theodore told them the truth in fragments.

Margaret Mercer had founded the Saint Orison Children’s Fund twenty-five years earlier. The charity built shelters, supported foster families, and paid medical expenses for children whose cases had been abandoned by the system.

For its first decade, the fund saved thousands of lives.

Then someone began using it.

Money moved through construction contracts, medical suppliers, temporary housing companies, and overseas development accounts. Most payments appeared legitimate. Only a careful comparison of records revealed that the same addresses, directors, and signatures repeated beneath different company names.

Margaret discovered the pattern.

She suspected that a group of donors and board members were laundering money through the charity. She began collecting documents.

Before she could report them, she died.

“What does Vanessa have to do with it?” Daniel asked.

“She grew up in one of Margaret’s shelters,” Theodore replied. “So did Adrian and his older brother, Gabriel.”

“Gabriel is alive?”

“I don’t know.”

“Adrian said Vanessa married him.”

Theodore removed his glasses.

“Vanessa was seventeen when she met Gabriel. He was brilliant, angry, and completely devoted to Margaret. After her death, he became convinced that I had killed her.”

“Did you?”

Theodore’s voice hardened.

“No.”

“Did you know who did?”

“I knew enough to be afraid.”

Claire thought of her father.

“What evidence killed my father?”

Theodore looked at her.

“Robert Whitmore helped Margaret create a private archive. After her death, he continued investigating. Years later, he told me he had located one surviving witness.”

“My father died of a heart attack.”

“He suffered a heart attack after someone entered his office and injected him with a drug that could not be detected by the initial examination.”

Claire felt cold.

“You knew?”

“I discovered it too late.”

“You let me believe he died naturally.”

“I wanted you protected.”

“You wanted silence.”

Theodore accepted the accusation without argument.

Daniel paced toward the window.

“Adrian found the same financial network.”

“Yes.”

“And you denied everything.”

“I did not know whether I could trust him.”

“So you let him disappear.”

“I gave him money and a route out of the country. He refused to leave without Noah.”

Claire remembered Adrian’s words.

Vanessa is not my wife.

“Why did Vanessa call Noah her son?”

Theodore’s eyes moved to the ballroom ceiling below them.

“Because Noah is Gabriel’s child.”

Daniel stared.

“Adrian is his uncle?”

“Yes.”

Claire tried to assemble the pieces.

“Where is Gabriel?”

“He disappeared eight years ago, shortly after Noah was born.”

“And Vanessa?”

“She claimed Gabriel died. Then she presented Adrian as Noah’s father to protect the child from questions.”

“Why would Adrian agree?”

“Because someone wanted Gabriel’s son.”

“Who?”

Theodore did not answer.

Music began below them.

The wedding processional.

The coordinator was keeping the guests occupied.

Daniel stepped closer to his father.

“You know who is behind this.”

“I know the name used by the organization.”

“What name?”

“The Equestrian Circle.”

Claire looked at the bronze horse.

Theodore nodded.

“Each senior member carried one. Margaret’s charm was different. It contained a hidden key.”

Daniel examined the horse, pressing along the dented side.

A panel opened beneath the base.

Inside was a narrow strip of metal.

Theodore closed his eyes.

“She found it.”

“Vanessa?” Claire asked.

“No. Margaret.”

Before they could ask more, Emily called.

Claire answered immediately.

“I saw Noah,” Emily whispered. “He’s on the twenty-seventh floor. Vanessa is with him.”

“Are you safe?”

“I’m following them.”

“Stop following them.”

“They entered Room 2714.”

The line went dead.

Claire ran.

Daniel and Theodore followed.

Room 2714 stood at the end of a quiet corridor reserved for foreign guests. The electronic lock displayed a red light.

Daniel used a master key.

The door opened.

Emily was tied to a chair beside the bed.

Claire rushed to her.

“Where is Noah?”

Emily nodded toward the balcony.

The glass door stood open.

A rope hung over the railing.

Daniel ran outside.

Twenty-seven floors below, the wedding guests’ cars looked like toys.

The rope descended only one level to the balcony of Room 2614.

Vanessa had not taken Noah down.

She had taken him into the hotel’s central ventilation level, a hidden floor between the two guest stories.

Theodore touched the wall.

“There is an old service chamber behind this room.”

Daniel looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because your mother built it.”

A sound came from inside the wall.

Three slow knocks.

Then Noah’s voice.

“Claire?”
