Chapter 15 - THE LAST ROOM

Nobody slept that night.
The townhouse was surrounded by investigators.
Security cameras were checked.
Doors were inspected.
Windows were sealed.
Nothing was missing.
Nothing looked disturbed.
Yet someone had taken a photograph from inside.
Marissa stood in the hallway.
She looked at every door.
The study.
The guest room.
The library.
The basement.
The storage room.
Then she noticed something.
A hallway that seemed shorter than it should have been.
She measured it.
The difference was nearly six feet.
Thomas looked at the wall.
“Hidden room.”
Marissa nodded.
They searched for the entrance.
Nothing.
David walked slowly toward the old library.
He ran his hand across the shelves.
Then stopped.
“This.”
He pulled one book.
Nothing happened.
He pulled another.
Still nothing.
Anthony approached.
“I remember this.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”
“There used to be a room here.”
Marissa stared.
“When?”
“Before we renovated.”
“Why was it sealed?”
Anthony looked at Eleanor.
She closed her eyes.
Marissa turned toward her.
“Tell me.”
Eleanor remained silent.
Thomas said:
“Mrs. Cole.”
Eleanor finally spoke.
“It wasn't my room.”
“Whose was it?”
She looked at Marissa.
“Yours.”
Marissa froze.
“My room?”
“You were never supposed to know.”
Anthony whispered:
“Mom.”
Eleanor continued.
“Before you left for deployment, you hid something there.”
Marissa stared at the wall.
Her memory returned.
A flash.
A young woman.
A locked room.
A black folder.
David.
A promise.
Then Anthony.
Then darkness.
She touched the wall.
“There.”
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The bookshelf moved.
Behind it was a narrow room.
Dust covered the floor.
A desk stood in the center.
On it was a single black box.
Marissa walked inside.
She opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Letters.
And one final envelope.
Her name was written on it.
Marissa opened it.
The first line made her stop breathing.
If you are reading this, then Anthony failed to protect you.
She continued.
The letter explained what had happened twelve years earlier.
It explained why her identity had been used.
It explained why David had disappeared.
It explained why Eleanor had protected Anthony.
But the letter ended before revealing the most important name.
The final paragraph had been torn away.
Marissa stared at the empty space.
“No.”
Thomas examined the envelope.
“It was removed recently.”
Marissa turned.
“How recently?”
David looked toward the open doorway.
“Very recently.”
Anthony looked terrified.
“Someone was here.”
Marissa turned toward him.
“Who?”
He didn't answer.
Eleanor suddenly whispered:
“Your husband knows.”
Anthony looked at her.
“You promised.”
Marissa stepped closer.
“What promise?”
Anthony said nothing.
Marissa's voice became cold.
“What did you promise?”
Anthony finally looked at her.
“To protect the last name.”
“What last name?”
He swallowed.
“The person behind Northbridge.”
Marissa stared.
“Who?”
Anthony closed his eyes.
“I can't say.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“You can.”
Anthony shook his head.
“If I say it, they'll come.”
Marissa held up the black folder.
“They're already here.”
Silence.
Then the lights in the townhouse went out.
Every screen went black.
The security system shut down.
The doors unlocked simultaneously.
Outside, every vehicle disappeared.
Thomas reached for his phone.
No signal.
David whispered:
“They're inside.”
A sound came from the hidden room.
A soft click.
Marissa turned.
The black box had moved.
A second compartment had opened beneath it.
Inside was a final document.
Not a ledger.
Not a bank statement.
Not a confession.
A photograph.
Marissa picked it up.
She looked at the faces.
Then stopped.
Anthony saw it.
His expression shattered.
Eleanor began to cry.
David stepped backward.
Thomas stared at the photograph.
Nobody spoke.
Marissa slowly turned the picture over.
There was a date.
Tomorrow.
And beneath it, one sentence:
The woman you trusted most is not the woman you think she is.
Marissa looked at Eleanor.
Then at Anthony.
Then at David.
For the first time, she realized the black folder had never contained the whole truth.
It had only contained the evidence they wanted her to find.
She closed the folder.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Approaching.
Everyone turned toward the doorway.
A woman's voice came from the darkness.
“Marissa?”
Marissa knew the voice.
She had heard it countless times.
She had trusted it.
She had defended it.
She had never questioned it.
Until now.
The woman stepped into the faint emergency light.
Marissa's face went completely still.
Anthony whispered her name.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Thomas reached for his weapon but stopped.
David lowered his eyes.
The woman smiled.
“You finally found the folder.”
Marissa stared at her.
“You gave it to me.”
The woman shook her head.
“No.”
She took one more step forward.
“I gave you the first folder.”
Marissa's eyes moved to the black folder in her hands.
“The first?”
The woman smiled.
“There are three.”
Marissa looked toward the hidden room.
Then toward the hallway.
Then at the woman standing before her.
“What happens when I find the third?”
The woman’s smile disappeared.
“You don't.”
The lights suddenly returned.
The woman was gone.
Only a single envelope remained on the floor.
Marissa picked it up.
Her hands were steady.
Her breathing was not.
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph of herself.
Taken twelve years earlier.
Standing beside the woman who had just disappeared.
On the back was a handwritten message.
You were the one who started this.
Marissa stared at the photograph.
For the first time, she questioned not Anthony.
Not Eleanor.
Not David.
Herself.
And somewhere beneath the townhouse, behind a wall nobody had opened in twelve years, a lock clicked.
Once.
Twice.
Then three times.
Marissa slowly turned toward the sound.
Thomas whispered:
“Don't open that door.”
Marissa looked at him.
“Why?”
Thomas stared at the wall.
“Because according to the records…”
He paused.
“That room was never supposed to exist.”
The hidden door began to open.
And from inside came the sound of a phone ringing.
Marissa stepped forward.
The black folder remained closed in her hand.
She had finally discovered the truth about Anthony.
She had uncovered Eleanor's secret.
She had found David.
She had exposed Northbridge.
But she still had no idea who had been protecting her all along.
The phone kept ringing.
Marissa reached for the door.
And just before her fingers touched the handle, the voice on the other side whispered:
“Marissa…”
She froze.
The voice continued.
“Whatever you do…”
May you like
A pause.
“Don't trust the person standing behind you.”
