Chapter 1 - THE DOCUMENT HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEE

“Marissa… what the hell did you do?”
Anthony Cole’s voice cracked across the polished stone driveway.
For the first time since Marissa had known him, he did not sound angry.
He sounded afraid.
A black government sedan had stopped outside the wrought-iron gates of the Manhattan townhouse. Two officials stepped out, their expressions unreadable as they approached the entrance.
Behind Marissa, two uniformed military personnel remained perfectly still.
Eleanor Cole, still clutching the expensive shopping bag she had emptied across the driveway moments earlier, stared at the approaching officials.
Her fury disappeared.
“What is this?” she whispered.
Marissa did not answer.
She held the black folder against her chest.
Anthony stepped toward her.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Marissa looked at him calmly.
“You said that twelve years ago.”
His jaw tightened.
“I’m warning you.”
“No,” she said. “You’re remembering.”
One of the officials stopped several feet away.
He looked at Marissa.
Then at the sealed document in her hand.
Then at Anthony.
His expression changed.
“Ma’am,” he said quietly, “does he know what this proves?”
Marissa’s eyes remained on her former husband.
“He’s about to.”
Anthony swallowed.
“Marissa.”
She slowly turned the sealed document over.
A red government stamp was visible on the back.
Anthony’s face went pale.
“What did you find?”
Marissa almost smiled.
“Not what I found.”
She lifted the black folder slightly.
“What you left behind.”
Eleanor suddenly stepped forward.
“You cannot come into this house and destroy my family because you’re bitter about a divorce.”
Marissa finally looked at her.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
Eleanor’s eyes flashed.
“You ungrateful little—”
“Enough.”
The single word came from the senior official.
Everyone fell silent.
He opened a leather identification case.
“My name is Thomas Reed. I represent the federal financial investigations division.”
Anthony stared at him.
“I have nothing to do with any investigation.”
Thomas looked directly at him.
“That is not what our records indicate.”
Anthony’s breathing changed.
Eleanor moved closer to her son.
“What records?”
Thomas did not answer her.
Instead, he looked at Marissa.
“Are you certain you want to proceed?”
Marissa glanced down at the folder.
For twelve years, she had carried the truth alone.
Twelve years of being called obedient.
Twelve years of being called lucky.
Twelve years of being told that her husband’s success was the reason she had a beautiful home, expensive clothes, and a comfortable life.
Twelve years of signing papers she was told were routine.
Twelve years of watching money disappear from accounts she did not understand.
Twelve years of hearing Anthony say, “Trust me.”
She had trusted him.
Until the night she stopped.
Marissa lifted her eyes.
“Yes.”
Thomas nodded.
Anthony stepped forward.
“You don't understand what you're doing.”
Marissa’s voice remained calm.
“I understand exactly what I’m doing.”
She opened the folder.
Only the first page was visible.
Anthony saw one number.
His expression collapsed.
Eleanor looked over his shoulder.
“What is it?”
Anthony did not answer.
“What is it, Anthony?”
He slowly backed away.
Marissa closed the folder.
“You should have asked me before you stole from me.”
Anthony stared at her.
“I never stole anything.”
Marissa nodded toward the folder.
“Then you won't mind seeing what's inside.”
Anthony said nothing.
Thomas glanced toward his colleagues.
“Proceed.”
The townhouse gates began to close.
Eleanor turned toward them.
“Wait!”
The iron gates moved slowly.
Anthony remained frozen.
Marissa stood on the other side.
For the first time in twelve years, he was outside.
And she was inside.
The folder was still closed.
May you like
But Anthony had already seen enough to know that whatever was inside it could change everything.
He just didn't know how much.
