Chapter 4 - The Husband Who Needed to Kneel

Emily listened to the recording seventeen times.

Not because she doubted Nathan’s voice.

Because she wanted to find hesitation in it.

Regret.

Fear.

Any evidence that the man she had married had not calmly discussed destroying her life.

There was none.

At home, Nathan was cooking dinner.

He had opened a bottle of wine they had bought during their honeymoon. Music played softly in the kitchen. He smiled when Emily entered.

For a moment, the scene was so ordinary that she understood how people remained trapped inside false lives. The truth could be unbearable when a lie offered warm light, familiar music and someone asking whether you wanted more wine.

Nathan kissed her cheek.

“You look tired.”

Emily placed her briefcase on the counter.

“Tell me about Project Lighthouse.”

The knife in Nathan’s hand stopped.

A piece of rosemary fell onto the cutting board.

“I don’t know what that is.”

Emily took out the photograph and placed it beside him.

Nathan stared at it.

All color left his face.

“Where did you get this?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“More than what it shows?”

Nathan turned off the stove.

“Emily, listen to me.”

“You brought Brooke into our bed.”

“It wasn’t what you think.”

“Did she fall there by accident?”

“She was using me.”

Emily laughed once, without humor.

“You approved a false security badge in my name before we met.”

His expression changed again.

That struck deeper than the photograph.

“Who showed you that?”

“Was our first meeting arranged?”

Nathan looked toward the kitchen cameras, unaware that Emily already knew they existed.

He lowered his voice.

“My father identified you years ago.”

“Why?”

“Because of your mother.”

“What did she find?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“Then tell me what you know.”

Nathan pushed the wine away.

“Your mother audited a property division Charles used before Halston Crown existed. She found transfers connected to an account called Lighthouse. She believed money was being removed from employee trusts.”

“She was right.”

“She collected evidence.”

“What happened to it?”

“It disappeared after she died.”

Emily kept her breathing steady.

“And Charles thought I might have it.”

“He thought she had left something for you.”

“So he ordered you to marry me?”

“No.”

Nathan’s answer came too quickly.

Emily watched him.

“He asked me to get close to you. That’s true. But I chose to marry you.”

“How generous.”

“I fell in love with you.”

“You were monitoring me before our first date.”

“I was supposed to find out whether you knew about your mother’s records. I stopped reporting to him after we got engaged.”

“Then why create the badge?”

Nathan looked down.

Emily understood.

“You never stopped.”

“I was protecting you.”

“You stole my credentials.”

“To keep Charles from creating something worse.”

“You approved nine million dollars in transfers under my name.”

“I thought the accounts were temporary.”

“You are a company director.”

“I don’t control anything.”

“You controlled whether you slept with your stepmother.”

Nathan flinched.

Brooke had power over him. Emily could see it now, but coercion did not erase the choices he had made.

“How long?” Emily asked.

“Eight months.”

“Did Charles know?”

“No.”

“Why Brooke?”

Nathan sat down.

“She found out I had been moving money away from Lighthouse.”

“For yourself?”

“For you.”

Emily’s expression hardened.

“I created a reserve account. I thought we might need to disappear.”

“Using stolen pension funds?”

“I was going to return it.”

“People always plan to return stolen money after they are safe.”

Nathan pressed his hands together.

“Brooke threatened to tell Charles about the account. She said she would protect us if I helped her access your audit files.”

“And you believed her?”

“I believed she hated him as much as I did.”

“You also believed betraying me was easier than telling me the truth.”

He did not answer.

Emily gathered the photograph.

Nathan reached for her wrist but stopped before touching her.

“You can’t confront Charles.”

“I’m not asking permission.”

“He will destroy you.”

“He already tried.”

“You don’t understand him.”

“No, Nathan. You never understood me.”

She walked toward the door.

Nathan followed.

“Emily, wait.”

She turned.

“I need one honest answer.”

“Anything.”

“Did you ever love me before you needed something from me?”

Nathan’s eyes filled with a pain she might once have trusted.

“Yes.”

Emily opened the door.

“That was not the question.”

She left him standing beneath the kitchen cameras.

At midnight, her private phone rang.

The number displayed no caller information.

Emily answered from Lena’s secure office.

A man spoke.

“You showed him the photograph.”

“How do you know?”

“You’re still being watched.”

“Who are you?”

“You already searched my name.”

Emily looked at Lena.

“Simon Redd is dead.”

“That is what Charles paid people to believe.”

Emily’s grip tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?”

“The truth displayed where nobody can bury it.”

“Why send me the photograph?”

“Because people ignore stolen money. They do not ignore humiliation.”

“You used my marriage.”

“Your marriage was already being used.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Where are you?”

“Not somewhere Charles can reach.”

“Then give me the evidence.”

“You have most of it.”

“I have accounts and recordings. I need proof of who controls Lighthouse.”

“You need Charles to expose himself.”

“How?”

“Invite the family to dinner.”

Emily looked at the photograph.

“Make them all watch,” Simon said. “When the folder rings, answer it.”

“What folder?”

The line went silent for several seconds.

Then Simon said, “The one your mother prepared sixteen years ago.”

The call ended.

Lena searched the number.

It matched Simon Redd’s disconnected office extension.

One second later, a calendar invitation appeared on Emily’s computer.

HALSTON FAMILY DINNER.

Six weeks away.

The guest list already included every board member, senior relative and trustee connected to Halston Crown.

The invitation had been created from Emily’s account.

At the bottom was a message.
