THE BLACK FOLDER RANG / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - Exhibit A

The first gasp came before the curtain finished falling.

Emily Halston stood at the center of the Pacific Heights living room, one hand still gripping the burgundy velvet fabric she had torn from the wall. Behind her, an enormous framed photograph dominated the room.

Nathan was in Emily’s bed.

Brooke was in his arms.

They were fully covered, their faces unmistakable, Brooke’s diamond bracelet resting against Nathan’s shoulder as though it belonged there.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The chandeliers glittered above tables crowded with white flowers, untouched champagne and silver dinnerware. Beyond the tall arched windows, San Francisco glowed beneath the pale evening sky.

Then Nathan’s chair struck the marble floor.

He stumbled forward and dropped to his knees.

“Emily.”

His voice was barely audible.

Brooke remained frozen beside the dining table. Her elegant pale dress made her look almost innocent, but her hand immediately covered the bracelet on her wrist.

That movement told Emily everything she needed to know.

Emily turned toward the stunned relatives surrounding them.

“Welcome,” she said. “Tonight, you meet the real family.”

Charles Halston rose slowly from the head of the table.

At sixty-eight, Nathan’s father still carried the authority of a man accustomed to rooms becoming silent when he entered them. His silver hair was perfectly combed. His black tuxedo had been tailored in London. Even his anger looked controlled.

Until he saw Brooke’s bracelet.

His wife’s bracelet.

The one he had given her on their twentieth anniversary.

Charles looked from Brooke to Nathan and then to the photograph.

“Tell me that photograph is fake.”

Brooke opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

Nathan crawled one step closer to Emily.

“Destroy it before anyone sees the files.”

Every whisper in the room stopped.

Emily looked down at him.

“The photograph only proved the affair.”

She crossed to the sideboard and lifted three thick evidence binders. Each one carried the black-and-gold emblem of Halston Crown Holdings.

She placed them beneath the photograph.

The first binder was marked PRIVATE ACCOUNTS.

The second was marked EMPLOYEE PENSION TRUST.

The third was marked PROJECT LIGHTHOUSE.

Brooke began moving backward toward the front doors.

Emily reached beneath the table and lifted a final sealed black folder. The company emblem had been pressed into its surface in silver.

“This proves what you stole,” Emily said, “and who helped you hide it.”

Charles’s face changed.

It was only a flicker, but Emily saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

Not anger at his son.

Not shock at his wife.

Fear of the folder.

A phone began ringing inside it.

The sound was old-fashioned and metallic, completely out of place in the elegant room.

Brooke stopped breathing.

“That number was supposed to be dead.”

Emily broke the seal.

Inside the folder lay a small black phone, a brass key and a company access badge.

The phone continued ringing.

The badge was turned facedown.

Emily lifted the phone.

Nathan shook his head.

“Don’t answer it.”

Charles stepped away from the table.

“Give me that folder.”

Emily pressed the answer button.

For a moment, she heard only static.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

“Emily, do not trust anyone in that room.”

The call ended.

The chandeliers went dark.

Several relatives shouted. Chairs scraped against the floor. Someone dropped a glass.

Emily held the phone tightly as emergency lights glowed along the baseboards.

“Brooke?” Charles called.

No answer came.

When the chandeliers returned less than ten seconds later, Brooke was gone.

The front doors remained closed.

The terrace doors remained locked.

Her chair was empty, and the bracelet she had tried to hide lay on the table.

Nathan was still on his knees.

Charles stared at the black folder.

Emily turned over the access badge.

Her own photograph stared back at her.

The badge carried her name, her employee number and a security clearance she had never possessed.

At the bottom was a date.

It had been issued three years before Emily joined Halston Crown Holdings.

Nathan looked at the date and whispered, “That’s impossible.”

Charles did not appear surprised.

Emily faced him.

“You knew this existed.”

Charles straightened his jacket.

“I know someone has worked very hard to destroy my family.”

“No,” Emily said. “Someone worked very hard to build it.”

A soft mechanical click came from behind the enormous framed photograph.

The frame shifted forward by half an inch.

Nathan looked up sharply.

“What did you put behind it?”

Emily had put nothing there.

She approached the photograph and pressed her fingers against its heavy wooden edge. A hidden compartment had opened inside the wall.

Within it sat a small metal box.

The brass key from the folder fit the lock.

Charles moved toward her.

“Emily, stop.”

She inserted the key.

Charles’s control finally broke.

“Do not open that box.”

Every relative turned toward him.

Emily twisted the key.

The lock released.

Inside was a single flash drive and a handwritten note.

She unfolded the note.

It contained only one sentence.

ASK CHARLES WHAT HAPPENED TO SIMON REDD.

Emily looked up.

Charles had gone pale.

May you like

Nathan stopped pretending to be afraid of Emily.

For the first time that evening, he looked afraid of his father.
