Chapter 11 - Thomas Ashford's Confession)

Thomas spoke for four hours.
He did not ask to be forgiven.
Perhaps he understood forgiveness was no longer his to request.
He began three months before Emily's birth.
Richard Ashford discovered the terms of Eleanor Whitmore's new trust.
If Margaret had a living child, voting control of several Whitmore companies would eventually pass to that child.
Richard considered the arrangement an attack on the Ashford family.
He pressured Thomas to challenge it.
Thomas refused at first.
Then the hospital fire happened.
Richard recognized chaos as opportunity.
Marianne Vale already worked with private maternity placements.
Helen Voss already owed money and feared prosecution.
A hospital administrator had gambling debts.
A doctor was willing to sign forms he had not witnessed.
Everything necessary for a crime existed before anyone officially decided to commit one.
Richard simply connected the pieces.
Margaret listened without moving.
Thomas described reaching the emergency staging area and learning Emily had survived.
"I saw her."
His voice became quiet.
"She was crying."
Emily's jaw tightened.
Thomas continued.
"Your birthmark was visible. Evelyn Price told me you were healthy."
Margaret whispered, "And you didn't come upstairs to tell me."
"No."
"What did you do?"
"I called my father."
Margaret closed her eyes.
Thomas said Richard arrived twenty minutes later.
He told Thomas the child could be transferred temporarily while they decided what to do.
Thomas agreed.
"Temporary," Emily said.
"That's what I told myself."
"When did temporary become forever?"
"The next morning."
Richard informed Thomas that records had already been altered.
If they reversed course, everyone involved could face prosecution.
Thomas panicked.
He allowed the lie to continue.
At first, he expected Emily to be adopted by a wealthy family through Marianne.
Instead, Marianne moved her between unofficial placements.
Thomas claimed he did not know.
Emily believed him on that point.
Not because she trusted him.
Because the records supported it.
Years later, Thomas learned Emily had entered state foster care.
He considered telling Margaret.
Richard stopped him again.
Then Richard died.
Thomas was finally free of his father.
Emily leaned forward.
"So why didn't you tell her then?"
Thomas looked at Margaret.
"Because by then, the lie belonged to me."
The room became silent.
Thomas continued.
"I had inherited control of the company. The trust had financed acquisitions. Hundreds of employees depended on decisions built around assets that should never have been mine."
Emily said, "So you chose the company."
"Yes."
Margaret whispered, "Again."
Thomas nodded.
"Again."
Six years earlier, Thomas hired private investigators to find Emily.
They discovered her.
Photographs.
School records.
Employment history.
Emily stared at him.
"You watched me."
"Yes."
She felt violated in a way she had not expected.
"What did you see?"
Thomas looked ashamed.
"You graduating."
Emily's eyes filled.
"You were there?"
"Across the street."
Margaret turned toward him in horror.
Thomas continued.
"I watched Nora Carter hug you."
Emily stood abruptly.
"Don't say her name."
Thomas stopped.
Emily struggled for breath.
Nora had attended every parent teacher conference.
Nora had stayed awake when Emily had pneumonia.
Nora had saved for three years to buy Emily a used car.
Nora had once told her that biology might explain where she came from, but love explained where she belonged.
Thomas did not get to use her name as part of his confession.
Emily sat again.
"Continue."
Thomas admitted sending Helen Voss to Bellweather.
Not to harm Emily.
To determine whether Emily knew anything.
Helen became frightened and began contacting Michael.
That eventually led everyone to table seven.
Michael asked about the black car.
Thomas explained it belonged to a private investigator.
He had been ordered to photograph Emily and report anyone approaching her.
"Why?" Margaret asked.
"Because Jacob contacted me months ago."
Jacob frowned.
"I never contacted you until this week."
Thomas looked at him.
"Someone claiming to be you did."
Laura sat forward.
"Who?"
Thomas shook his head.
"I don't know."
Another layer.
Another person.
Thomas showed investigators the emails.
The sender claimed to possess Marianne Vale's complete ledger and demanded two million dollars.
Jacob denied involvement.
Michael examined the address.
"It could have been Helen."
"No," Emily said.
Everyone looked at her.
"Helen came to Bellweather because she wanted to confess. She was scared, but she didn't want money."
Thomas nodded.
"I don't think it was Helen."
Margaret asked, "Then who?"
Thomas looked at Laura.
"There is one living person we haven't discussed."
Laura frowned.
Thomas spoke the name.
"Dr. Samuel Vane."
Michael went pale.
"The physician on the false death certificate."
Thomas nodded.
"I was told he died."
"He didn't."
Thomas opened a document.
"Richard paid to relocate him. Different name. Different state."
Emily stared at him.
"You knew?"
"Only recently."
"Where is he?"
Thomas looked toward the detectives.
"Florida."
One detective left the room immediately.
Thomas turned back to Emily.
"Samuel was the last person my father paid directly."
"For what?"
Thomas hesitated.
"To destroy the original birth records."
Emily looked at the hospital bracelet.
"But he didn't."
"No."
"Why?"
Thomas's expression darkened.
"Because he was smart enough to keep leverage."
Jacob understood first.
"The extortion emails."
Thomas nodded.
"Samuel Vane has been blackmailing the Ashford family for twenty two years."
Margaret stared.
Thomas continued.
"My father paid him until his death."
"And you?"
"I kept paying."
Emily felt disgust.
"So there was another person who knew I was alive."
"Yes."
"And instead of exposing you, he made money."
"Yes."
Emily stood.
"I'm done for today."
She walked toward the door.
Thomas spoke behind her.
"Emily."
She stopped but did not turn.
"I'm sorry."
Emily closed her eyes.
Then she looked back.
"You should be."
She left the room.
Outside, Margaret caught up with her.
Emily expected comfort.
Instead Margaret simply walked beside her.
After several minutes Emily said, "I don't know how to do this."
Margaret understood.
"Neither do I."
Emily looked at her.
Margaret reached for her hand.
This time Emily took it.
They walked outside together.
For the first time, Emily did not feel like a woman searching backward for a family.
May you like
She felt like someone deciding what family could become next.
But before that future could begin, one man in Florida still possessed part of her stolen past.
