Chapter 7 - THE BRUISE UNDER THE SLEEVE

Thursday morning brought a new problem.
A bruise.
Emily noticed it when Noah reached for cereal.
His pajama sleeve moved upward.
Dark fingerprints marked the inside of his upper arm.
Emily’s stomach dropped.
“Noah.”
He pulled the sleeve down immediately.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“Noah.”
He looked at Robert.
That was the first thing he did.
Not Rachel.
Robert.
Emily followed his gaze.
Robert looked uncomfortable.
“Kids bruise.”
Emily ignored him.
“Did your mom do that?”
Noah’s eyes filled.
“No.”
Emily knew the difference between a child answering and a child surviving.
She crouched as much as her knee allowed.
“You won’t get in trouble.”
Noah whispered, “Grandpa said Mommy could lose me.”
Emily looked at Robert.
“What?”
Robert stood.
“I didn’t say that.”
Noah flinched.
Emily’s voice became cold.
“What did you say?”
“I told him families can get broken apart when people exaggerate.”
Emily stared at him.
“You told a seven-year-old that telling the truth could destroy his family.”
“I told him to be accurate.”
“He is seven.”
Robert’s face hardened.
“And you’re encouraging him to accuse his mother.”
Emily reached for her phone.
Robert’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you doing?”
“Taking a picture of the bruise.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Robert stepped closer.
“You will not turn this into some custody war.”
“This became a custody problem when Rachel started hurting him.”
“She did not hurt him.”
Emily laughed.
“Do you want to watch the recordings again?”
Robert looked away.
Noah whispered, “It was Uncle Steven.”
The room stopped.
Emily slowly looked at him.
“What?”
Noah stared at the table.
“He grabbed me.”
“When?”
“At my house.”
“Why?”
“I opened Mommy’s office.”
Robert cursed under his breath.
Emily’s pulse raced.
“What did you see?”
Noah’s hands started shaking.
“A bag.”
“What kind of bag?”
“Black.”
“What was inside?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you open it?”
Noah nodded.
“What did you see?”
“Money.”
Robert sat down heavily.
Emily stared at him.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Stop lying.”
“I didn’t know about a bag.”
Noah continued.
“Uncle Steven came in.”
“What did he do?”
“He said I wasn’t supposed to touch it.”
Emily looked at the bruise.
“He grabbed you?”
Noah nodded.
“Did Rachel see?”
“She came after.”
“What did she say?”
Noah started crying.
“She said I was stealing.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Of course.
The accusation about food.
The punishment.
The secret cameras.
Rachel wasn’t simply controlling Noah.
She had been conditioning everyone to believe he lied and stole.
Because Noah had seen something.
Emily opened the cloud archive again.
She searched by date.
“When did this happen?”
Noah thought.
“After my school picture day.”
Emily checked the calendar.
Three weeks earlier.
She scanned footage.
Hallway.
Kitchen.
Noah’s room.
Then one clip appeared from 3:12 p.m.
Steven entered carrying a black duffel bag.
Rachel followed him.
The recording had audio.
“You can’t keep bringing it here.”
“It’s temporary.”
“Daniel could come home.”
“He’s in Dallas.”
“That doesn’t mean his sister won’t come over.”
Steven laughed.
“Emily?”
“Don’t underestimate her.”
Emily almost smiled.
Rachel had been right about one thing.
Steven placed the bag near Rachel’s office.
“How much is left?”
“Enough.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“Two hundred.”
Rachel whispered, “Thousand?”
Steven shushed her.
Emily stared at the screen.
Robert looked like he might be sick.
“What did he do?”
Emily turned toward him.
“You really don’t know.”
He shook his head.
Emily believed him.
For the first time.
Because Robert looked terrified.
The footage continued.
Rachel said, “You told me this was gambling debt.”
Steven replied, “It was.”
“Was?”
“Things changed.”
“What things?”
Steven moved closer.
“The kind you don’t ask about.”
Rachel crossed her arms.
“You brought two hundred thousand dollars into my house.”
“Our house.”
Rachel stared at him.
“Excuse me?”
“You think Daniel owns everything because his name is on the mortgage?”
Emily looked at Robert.
Robert whispered, “What the hell does that mean?”
Then a door opened.
Noah entered the frame.
Steven spun.
“What are you doing?”
The boy froze.
Rachel shouted, “Noah, go upstairs.”
But Noah saw the open bag.
Stacks of cash.
Steven grabbed his arm.
Hard.
The exact place of the bruise.
Emily felt rage take over.
Noah cried.
Rachel looked toward the camera.
Then she did something strange.
She reached up.
The screen went black.
Someone had intentionally disconnected it.
Emily whispered, “She knew the camera was recording.”
Robert said nothing.
Emily turned toward him.
“She wasn’t using those cameras to monitor Noah.”
Robert frowned.
“What?”
“She was using them to monitor everyone else.”
Then the doorbell rang.
Noah froze.
Robert looked toward the front window.
A delivery van sat outside.
Emily relaxed slightly.
Robert opened the door.
A small package waited on the porch.
No return address.
Addressed to Emily.
She opened it at the kitchen table.
Inside was a cheap burner phone.
One text message appeared on the screen.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE VIDEOS DELETED.
Emily looked at Robert.
Then at Noah.
May you like
Someone knew.
And whoever it was knew Emily had restored the archive.
