Chapter 4 - WHAT RACHEL CAME TO DESTROY

Rachel walked inside without waiting to be invited.
She looked at Emily.
Then at the crutch.
Then smiled.
“I heard we have a misunderstanding.”
Emily looked at the black bag.
“What’s that?”
“Birthday decorations.”
“At eleven at night?”
Rachel ignored the question.
“Where’s Noah?”
“Asleep.”
“Good.”
Emily tightened her grip on the railing.
“You need to leave.”
Rachel laughed.
“This is my father-in-law’s house.”
“And Noah is your son. Apparently neither fact stops you from treating people like garbage.”
Robert stepped between them.
“Enough.”
“No,” Emily said. “Not enough.”
Rachel’s smile vanished.
“You saw one recording.”
“One was enough.”
“You have no idea what it’s like raising him alone half the month.”
“Then ask for help.”
“I did.”
Rachel looked toward Robert.
Emily followed her gaze.
A realization formed.
“You’ve been helping her.”
Robert sighed.
“Emily.”
“How long?”
Rachel crossed her arms.
“This is ridiculous.”
“How long has Dad known?”
No one answered.
Emily felt sick.
Rachel moved toward the stairs.
“I’m taking Noah home.”
Emily blocked her path.
“No.”
Rachel stopped.
“You don’t have authority over my child.”
“You’re not taking him tonight.”
“Move.”
“No.”
Rachel came closer.
“You think being Daniel’s sister makes you important?”
Emily stared into her eyes.
“No. I think Noah being scared of you makes this important.”
Rachel’s face changed.
For one moment, the mask disappeared.
Emily saw rage.
Pure rage.
Then Rachel smiled again.
“Where’s the tablet?”
Emily’s suspicion became certainty.
“So that’s why you’re here.”
“I want my property.”
“It belongs to Noah.”
“I bought it.”
Emily shook her head.
“You’re not getting it.”
Rachel turned toward Robert.
“Are you going to allow this?”
Robert looked exhausted.
“Emily, give her the tablet.”
“No.”
“It’s hers.”
“It contains evidence.”
Robert’s face tightened.
“Evidence is a dramatic word.”
Rachel smiled.
“See?”
Emily looked between them.
Something became horribly clear.
They were more afraid of Daniel learning the truth than of Noah living through it.
Emily took her phone from her pocket.
“Then I’ll send the video to Daniel now.”
Rachel lunged.
Emily moved backward.
Pain shot through her knee.
Her crutch slipped.
Rachel reached for the phone.
Emily shouted.
Robert grabbed Rachel’s arm.
“Stop!”
Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Mommy?”
Everyone froze.
Rachel looked up.
Her face transformed.
Instantly gentle.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
Noah stepped backward.
That tiny motion exposed everything.
Rachel saw it too.
Her expression hardened.
“Come downstairs.”
Noah shook his head.
Rachel’s voice sharpened.
“Now.”
Emily yelled, “Noah, stay there.”
Robert cursed.
Rachel turned on Emily.
“You are poisoning him against me.”
“No. He’s afraid because of what you do when nobody’s watching.”
Rachel’s eyes became wet.
Not from sadness.
From fury.
“You know what? Fine. Show Daniel.”
Emily blinked.
Rachel continued.
“Show him thirty seconds. Show him the worst moment of my life. Show him a mother losing her temper after months of being abandoned by her husband.”
Emily stared at her.
“Daniel didn’t abandon you.”
“He’s gone more than he’s here!”
“So you punish Noah?”
“I discipline my child.”
“You lock him in rooms.”
Rachel’s face went still.
Robert whispered, “Emily.”
Noah began crying upstairs.
Emily heard him say, “Don’t make her mad.”
Rachel’s confidence disappeared.
The sentence hung in the room.
Robert looked down.
Emily looked at Rachel.
Rachel looked toward her son.
Then she said something that chilled Emily more than shouting would have.
“You see what you’ve done?”
She was speaking to Noah.
Not herself.
“You’ve turned everyone against me.”
Noah covered his face.
Emily snapped.
She moved toward Rachel.
“Get out.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“Excuse me?”
“Get out of this house.”
“You don’t own it.”
Emily looked at Robert.
“If she stays, I call the police.”
Robert looked stunned.
“You wouldn’t.”
Emily lifted her phone.
“Try me.”
Rachel laughed.
But she backed toward the door.
Before leaving, she looked at Noah.
“Your birthday is Friday.”
Noah stared down.
Rachel’s voice softened.
“Think carefully about whether you want to destroy it.”
Then she walked out.
Emily wanted to follow her.
Instead she went upstairs.
Noah had disappeared into his room.
Emily found him beneath the blanket.
She sat beside him.
“I’m sorry.”
He peeked out.
“For what?”
“For letting her come here.”
“She was mad because of me.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Noah, look at me.”
He did.
“Adults are responsible for what adults do.”
His eyes filled.
“Even moms?”
“Especially moms.”
He cried quietly.
Emily stayed until he fell asleep.
Then she returned to her room.
She opened the tablet.
The video folder was gone.
Emily stared at the screen.
Her breath stopped.
She searched again.
Nothing.
She ran downstairs.
Robert was cleaning the kitchen.
“The video is gone.”
He turned.
“What?”
“The recording. It’s deleted.”
Robert frowned.
“I didn’t touch it.”
“Rachel didn’t touch the tablet.”
They looked at each other.
Then Emily remembered the black trash bag.
Birthday decorations.
She walked toward the trash can beside the back door.
Inside were pieces of plastic.
A small shattered device.
Black casing.
Tiny wires.
Emily pulled one piece out.
A home security camera.
Robert went pale.
Emily whispered, “What the hell is this?”
Robert stared at the broken camera.
May you like
Then said something Emily would remember for the rest of her life.
“You were never supposed to find that.”
