Chapter 9 - Seraphina Comes Back

Seraphina requested the meeting herself.

Emilia almost refused.

Then Lydia said something that changed her mind.

“She’s afraid.”

Emilia looked at her.

“Of losing money?”

“No.”

Lydia shook her head.

“Seraphina was never afraid of being poor.”

“What is she afraid of?”

Lydia hesitated.

“Victor Langford.”

The meeting took place inside a private legal office.

No press.

No family.

Only Emilia, Carter, their attorney, Seraphina, and Seraphina’s lawyer.

Seraphina looked different.

Not transformed.

Not humbled into sainthood.

Simply tired.

The expensive clothing remained.

The perfect posture remained.

But the certainty was gone.

She placed a small flash drive on the table.

“What is this?” Carter asked.

“Insurance.”

“Against whom?”

Seraphina gave him a bitter smile.

“Against the people who taught me never to exist without insurance.”

Emilia said nothing.

Seraphina turned toward her.

“You probably think I’m doing this because I grew a conscience.”

“Did you?”

Seraphina almost laughed.

“I’m not sure.”

At least she was honest.

She explained that Victor Langford’s investment group had quietly financed Vale Concierge Aviation during its most aggressive expansion.

In exchange, Vale supplied more than aircraft.

It supplied access.

Information about wealthy clients.

Schedules.

Preferences.

Staffing vulnerabilities.

Family disputes.

Not formal espionage.

Nothing so theatrical.

Information gathered by people who became invisible in wealthy households.

Drivers heard phone calls.

Assistants saw documents.

Flight crews knew travel schedules.

Housekeepers knew who slept where.

Most employees never reported anything.

But managers sometimes did.

Seraphina had known.

She had told herself it was customer intelligence.

Until one employee disappeared from the company after refusing to cooperate.

“What happened to her?” Emilia asked.

“I don’t know.”

Seraphina’s voice cracked slightly.

“And that is the answer that finally started frightening me.”

Carter picked up the flash drive.

“Why keep this?”

“Because Victor never trusted me.”

She looked at Emilia.

“And I finally learned not to trust him.”

The drive contained emails.

Internal memos.

Financial transfers.

And one list.

Thirty-seven names.

Former employees who had filed complaints.

Beside several names was a single word.

Resolved.

Rachel’s name appeared near the bottom.

Emilia felt cold.

Beside Rachel’s name, the space remained blank.

Then she saw another.

Marta Ruiz.

Resolved.

Marta was alive.

Safe.

But suddenly that word meant something they did not understand.

Carter reached for his phone.

Emilia stopped him.

“Before we call anyone…”

She looked at Seraphina.

“What does resolved mean?”

May you like

Seraphina stared at the table.

“I was hoping you could tell me.”
