Chapter 23 - What Carter Built Next
Carter remained unemployed for four days.
On the fifth, he founded Hale Works.
Not a giant corporation.
Not yet.
A private investment company with one unusual requirement.
Any business receiving money from Hale Works had to disclose labor practices with the same seriousness it disclosed financial performance.
Investors called it idealistic.
Then twelve institutional funds asked to participate.
Carter declined nine.
Emilia enjoyed watching that.
“You like saying no.”
“I’ve recently developed the skill.”
Meanwhile, the Dignity Standard expanded.
Hospitals asked for versions adapted to contracted cleaners and home health workers.
Hotels asked for training.
Private schools asked for domestic employment guides for wealthy families.
One airline adopted the standards voluntarily.
Then another.
Emilia insisted the program not become a Carter branding campaign.
Her name appeared nowhere in the certification title.
“If this becomes about us,” she told the board, “it dies when people get bored with us.”
The foundation became more independent.
Workers gained voting seats.
Marta chaired the advisory council.
Rachel designed aviation standards.
Lydia, from law school, sent overly detailed emails correcting policy language.
June corrected everyone’s grammar.
Then Emilia received a package from Portland.
Claire Donnelly.
Inside was the old settlement check.
Never cashed.
Claire had kept it for nine years.
There was a note.
I used other money to start again. I kept this because I needed proof that they knew.
Emilia called her.
Claire agreed to let the check be displayed in the foundation archive.
Not as a trophy.
As evidence.
At the opening, Oliver stared at it.
“That piece of paper is important?”
“Yes,” Emilia said.
“Why?”
“Because sometimes a piece of paper shows what people were trying not to say.”
Oliver nodded.
Then he pointed to the uniform Emilia had worn at the airfield, now displayed nearby.
“And that?”
