Chapter 8 - The Investigation Robert Feared
Three days after the engagement dinner, Robert received another shock.
His company was selected for a federal compliance review.
For more than twenty years, Hale Development Group had managed public construction projects, including several contracts involving military housing.
Robert immediately assumed Claire was responsible.
He called her office repeatedly.
She did not answer.
He left messages accusing her of using government authority to punish him. He contacted Evan and claimed Claire intended to destroy the family.
Evan refused to intervene.
Finally, Robert traveled to Washington and demanded to see her.
Security stopped him in the lobby of the National Defense Integrity Command.
He stood beneath a massive seal bearing the words Duty, Truth, Accountability.
Claire appeared twenty minutes later in uniform.
Three silver stars rested on each shoulder.
Robert had seen photographs online, but the sight still stunned him.
Officers passing through the lobby greeted her respectfully.
Claire led him into a private conference room.
“Did you order an investigation into my company?” he asked.
“No.”
“You expect me to believe the timing is a coincidence?”
“The review began seven months ago.”
Robert hesitated.
“Why?”
“Your company submitted bids through a subcontractor already under investigation.”
“I knew nothing about that.”
“That may be true.”
“Then stop the review.”
“I cannot.”
“You command this entire organization.”
“Which is exactly why I cannot interfere.”
Robert placed both hands on the table.
“I’m your father.”
Claire’s expression did not change.
“Last week, you did not want anyone to know that.”
Robert looked away.
“That was a mistake.”
“It was a pattern.”
“I came here to apologize.”
“You came here because you believe I control an investigation affecting your company.”
He had no answer.
Claire opened a folder.
“To avoid any conflict, I removed myself from every decision connected to Hale Development. An independent team will conduct the review.”
“So you won’t help me.”
“If your company complied with the law, the records will show it.”
“And if someone below me made an error?”
“Then investigators will determine responsibility.”
Robert stood.
“Your mother would never have treated me like this.”
Claire’s eyes sharpened.
“Do not use her memory to request special treatment.”
He recoiled.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Claire removed an envelope from the folder and slid it across the table.
Inside was a copy of Margaret’s letter.
Robert looked confused.
“I have the original.”
“I know. Aunt Diana told me.”
“Then why give me this?”
“Because you keep asking what Mom would have wanted.”
Claire pointed toward the letter.
“She already told you.”
Robert lowered himself into the chair again.
His anger began to collapse.
“I don’t know how to speak to you anymore.”
“You could begin without defending yourself.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That you had become more important than me.”
The honesty surprised both of them.
Robert stared at his hands.
“When you were young, everyone knew me as Robert Hale, the businessman. Then you began doing things I couldn’t understand. People spoke about your courage and your service. I felt as though your life proved mine was small.”
Claire sat across from him.
“My success was never an accusation against you.”
“I made it one.”
“Yes.”
He nodded slowly.
“I cannot ask you to forgive that today.”
“No.”
“But may I ask you to tell me what your command does?”
Claire studied him, searching for manipulation.
This time, she saw none.
She opened the folder between them.
For the next hour, she explained her work.

It was the first ceremony he had ever attended for her, even though there was no audience and no applause.
