The Better Question / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - Why Don’t You Know Her?

The silence after Theodore’s question felt heavier than shouting.

Why don’t you know who your own daughter is?

Robert’s face lost its color.

“I know exactly who she is,” he said. “Claire is my daughter, but this evening is about Evan.”

A shocked murmur spread through the guests.

Lydia turned sharply toward Evan.

“You told me she was a family friend.”

Evan looked at Claire.

“I can explain.”

Claire’s expression remained calm.

Robert stepped forward.

“This is a private family misunderstanding.”

“No,” Eleanor said. “It became public when you placed your daughter beside the kitchen and denied her place in the family.”

Robert’s eyes moved between the judges.

“I think there has been some confusion about Claire’s employment.”

Theodore looked almost offended.

“Employment?”

Robert attempted a laugh.

“She has a government position. We’re proud of her, of course, but military titles can sound more dramatic than they are.”

Several guests lowered their eyes.

Claire said nothing.

Theodore faced the room.

“For anyone who is confused, Lieutenant General Claire Hale commands the National Defense Integrity Command.”

A glass slipped from someone’s hand and struck the carpet.

Theodore continued.

“She oversees joint investigations involving military agencies, federal contractors, and national security programs. Her work has recovered billions in public funds and protected thousands of families.”

Eleanor added, “She is one of the most respected officers we have ever worked with.”

Robert stared at Claire.

For the first time that evening, he truly looked at her.

Not at the navy dress.

Not at the daughter who had disobeyed him.

At the woman the judges described.

“You were promoted?” he asked.

Claire held his gaze.

“Six weeks ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I sent you an invitation.”

Robert’s expression shifted.

“I never received it.”

“I mailed it to the house and emailed it to you.”

Robert looked toward Evan.

Claire did too.

Evan lowered his head.

“I saw the email,” he admitted.

Robert’s voice sharpened.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“You said military ceremonies weren’t relevant to the engagement.”

Lydia stood.

“You both knew she had an important ceremony, and neither of you attended?”

Evan rose quickly.

“Lydia, please.”

“No. You told me your sister avoided the family. You never said the family avoided her.”

Robert attempted to regain control.

“This is not the time.”

Claire finally spoke.

“You’re right.”

Every face turned toward her.

“This is Evan and Lydia’s engagement dinner. They deserve a celebration, not a trial.”

Robert looked relieved.

Claire continued.

“But there will be no more lying.”

She walked toward the main table.

Guests moved aside.

When she reached Evan, she placed a small wrapped box before him.

“I brought this for you.”

Evan’s hands trembled as he opened it.

Inside was Margaret Hale’s silver compass.

Their mother had carried it during every family trip and later given it to Claire before her first deployment.

A message was engraved on the back.

Never confuse the easy road with the right one.

Evan closed his eyes.

“I don’t deserve this.”

“No,” Claire said. “Not yet.”

She turned to Lydia.

“I’m sorry your engagement dinner became this.”

Lydia looked near tears.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

Robert moved closer.

“Claire, we should speak privately.”

Claire looked at him.

“We had privacy three days ago.”

Then she returned to the table near the kitchen, picked up her coat, and walked toward the exit.

This time, Theodore and Eleanor walked beside her.
