Chapter 6 - The Party Built on a Lie

Adrian arrived at the ballroom with Vanessa on his arm.
Although they separated before entering the main hall, several photographers captured them stepping from the same car.
Vanessa did not seem concerned.
“By tomorrow,” she whispered, “no one will question why I was beside you.”
Adrian adjusted his cuffs.
“They may question it if Clara appears.”
“She won’t.”
“You don’t know her.”
Vanessa smiled.
“You burned the dress.”
The memory made Adrian uncomfortable, but not guilty.
He had not intended to destroy the entire gown. He had planned to burn one sleeve, enough to make it unwearable.
When Clara caught him, anger had taken control.
For years, he had lived beneath the invisible weight of her name.
He was Adrian Cole, but every door seemed connected to Clara Bennett. Even when no one mentioned her, he imagined them wondering whether he deserved his position.
Vanessa never made him feel small.
She praised his decisions, admired his ambition, and agreed that Clara’s quietness reflected weakness.
“You built this division,” Vanessa often told him. “You should be the one in control.”
Adrian wanted to believe her.
That evening, the ballroom had been decorated with enormous blue banners bearing his name. A stage stood beneath the central chandelier. On it rested a silver plaque announcing his appointment as regional president.
Adrian greeted investors and accepted congratulations.
Each compliment strengthened the lie.
By nine o’clock, Malcolm would announce the promotion. After that, Adrian believed the board would have no choice but to confirm it.
Public embarrassment was something corporations avoided.
He had built the evening into a shield.
Vanessa approached him near the champagne tower.
“Have you heard from Malcolm?”
“No.”
“The board members are disappearing.”
Adrian glanced around.
Several directors were absent from the ballroom.
“Probably a private reception.”
“Without you?”
Before he could answer, the event coordinator hurried toward them.
“Mr. Cole, there is a delay in the program.”
“What delay?”
“I wasn’t given details.”
“Then find them.”
The woman nodded and left.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Something is wrong.”
Adrian reached for another glass of champagne.
“Nothing is wrong.”
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Clara entered in red.
May you like
And every lie Adrian had told suddenly had a witness.
