Chapter 3 - The Missing Name

Three weeks before the promotion party, a white envelope arrived at the house.

Adrian opened it before Clara came home.

She found the invitation lying facedown on his desk.

The card announced a gala celebrating the appointment of Bennett International’s new regional president.

Adrian Cole.

Clara smiled when she saw his name.

Despite their growing distance, she was proud of what he appeared to have accomplished.

“What time should we leave?” she asked that evening.

Adrian continued reading his tablet.

“You are not required to attend.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

He looked up.

“It is primarily a corporate event.”

“I know.”

“There will be speeches, investors, and press.”

“I have attended corporate events before.”

“Not recently.”

Clara studied him.

“Do you not want me there?”

Adrian placed the tablet on the table.

“I want the evening to go smoothly.”

“And my presence would prevent that?”

“You have been out of this world for a long time.”

“This world?”

“Business.”

Clara almost laughed.

Instead, she asked, “Who is presenting the promotion?”

“Malcolm, probably.”

“Has the board approved it?”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Why would you ask that?”

“Because executive appointments require board approval.”

“It is a formality.”

“Then the board has not voted.”

“You are overthinking it.”

He stood and walked away.

That night, Clara checked her email.

She had received no board packet concerning Adrian’s appointment.

At first, she assumed Malcolm’s office had made an administrative mistake. She drafted a message asking for clarification but did not send it.

The next morning, Adrian apologized.

He brought her coffee and kissed her forehead.

“I’m under pressure,” he said. “Of course you should attend.”

Clara wanted to believe him.

Over the following days, however, he criticized every dress she considered.

One was too plain.

Another was too bright.

A third made her look older.

When she chose her mother’s pale-gold gown, Adrian said nothing.

His silence felt like approval.

Then Vanessa Clarke called during dinner.

Adrian left the room to answer, but Clara heard his voice from the hallway.

“She still plans to come,” he said.

A pause followed.

“No. I will handle it.”

When Adrian returned, Clara continued eating.

“Is there a problem?” she asked.

“Nothing important.”

“Was that Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“Why are you discussing whether I’m attending?”

His fork stopped.

“You misunderstood.”

“I heard you.”

Adrian leaned back.

“Vanessa is responsible for seating.”

“She needed to know whether your wife would attend her husband’s promotion?”

“She needed an accurate guest count.”

Clara looked at him for a long moment.

“Where am I sitting?”

“What?”

“At the party. Where is my seat?”

He did not answer.

The following afternoon, Clara called the event coordinator herself.

The woman sounded confused.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Cole. I don’t see your name.”

“Perhaps I’m listed as Clara Bennett.”

There was a long silence.

“No, ma’am.”

“Who is seated beside Adrian Cole?”

Another silence.

“Vanessa Clarke.”

Clara thanked her and ended the call.

For the first time, she allowed herself to consider the possibility that Adrian’s cruelty was not the result of stress.

It was strategy.

He did not merely want her absent.

May you like

He wanted someone else in her place.
