Chapter 14 - The Morning Claire Took Everything Back)

At 8:00 a.m., Grant Parker lost access to Parker Family Holdings.

At 8:03, Linda’s supplementary card linked to Claire’s corporate account stopped working.

At 8:07, Evan received notice that the loan Claire had guaranteed would be restructured directly in his name.

At 8:15, three federal agencies received encrypted evidence packages.

At 8:30, Claire’s companies announced independent ownership and licensing reviews.

At 9:00, Thomas Vale’s attorneys called Rachel.

At 9:04, Rachel hung up on them.

At 9:11, they called again.

This time Claire answered.

Thomas was not on the line.

His attorney was.

“Ms. Parker, releasing confidential commercial information could expose you to enormous liability.”

Claire looked across the conference table at Daniel.

“Tell Mr. Vale I appreciate his concern.”

“He is prepared to negotiate.”

“I’m not.”

“You may want to reconsider.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand how exposed you are.”

Claire smiled.

“That sentence has controlled my family for thirty years.”

She disconnected.

By noon, news organizations began reporting that federal investigators were examining historical technology licensing agreements connected to several major corporations.

No names had officially been released.

Yet.

Grant watched from a television in Rachel’s conference room.

“You’ve started a war.”

Claire stood beside him.

“No. I stopped surrendering.”

He looked at her.

For the first time, Grant seemed smaller.

Not physically.

Psychologically.

The giant from Claire’s childhood had become an aging man surrounded by consequences.

“I’m going to prison,” he said.

“Possibly.”

“You could stop it.”

“No.”

“I’m your father.”

Claire studied him.

Despite Richard Shaw.

Despite the lies.

Despite everything.

Grant had changed diapers.

Attended school plays.

Taught her to drive.

Sat outside the emergency room when she broke her wrist.

And later stole from her.

Humiliated her.

Forged her signature.

Love did not erase harm.

Harm did not erase every memory of love.

That was the cruel complexity Claire had wanted to avoid.

She said, “You were my father every time you protected me.”

Grant looked hopeful.

“And you were my father every time you hurt me.”

His hope disappeared.

“You don’t get to claim one and deny the other.”

Grant nodded.

A tear rolled down his cheek.

Claire had never seen him cry honestly.

She didn’t rescue him from it.

Linda entered.

“I need somewhere to stay.”

Claire looked at her.

“The house is yours.”

“The accounts are frozen.”

“Your personal retirement account isn’t.”

“It won’t cover everything.”

“Then reduce everything.”

Linda stared.

“You’d let your mother struggle?”

Claire almost laughed.

“You own a mortgage-free four-bedroom house worth over a million dollars.”

Linda looked offended.

Claire continued.

“You aren’t struggling. You’re experiencing budgeting.”

Evan covered a smile.

Linda noticed.

“You think this is funny?”

“No,” Evan said.

Then he looked at Claire.

“But I think we deserved it.”

That afternoon, Evan did something Claire never expected.

He transferred the remaining money from the account Grant had created for him back to the forensic team.

$417,000.

“I don’t know how much came from you,” he said.

“We’ll trace it.”

“If it’s yours, take it.”

“What will Melissa say?”

Evan laughed sadly.

“She left this morning.”

Claire raised an eyebrow.

“Because the Europe trip was canceled?”

“Apparently our relationship was more geographically dependent than I realized.”

Claire laughed.

For the first time in two days, it felt genuine.

Daniel entered.

His expression erased it.

“We found Thomas.”

Claire stood.

“Where?”

“His private jet is preparing to leave Boeing Field.”

Grant immediately said, “Stop him.”

Rachel was already calling investigators.

Daniel shook his head.

“It’s not that simple.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas isn’t listed as a passenger.”

Claire frowned.

“Then who is?”

Daniel handed her the manifest.

Claire read the first name.

Rebecca Reeves.

The missing beneficiary.

Alive.

The second name made Claire’s blood run cold.

Sophie Shaw.

May you like

Claire looked around.

Sophie was gone.
