Chapter 12 - The Man Behind the Curtain)

Thomas Vale was seventy-one.
Billionaire.
Philanthropist.
Technology investor.
Publicly, he had retired five years earlier.
Privately, he still controlled networks of companies across three continents.
Claire had met him twice.
Once at twenty-four.
Again at twenty-eight.
Both times Thomas praised her success.
Neither time did he mention knowing Daniel.
Or Grant.
Or the trust.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“I was wrong about him.”
Grant laughed bitterly.
“You were wrong about everyone.”
Daniel turned.
“I was wrong about you too.”
Grant said nothing.
Sophie opened Eleanor’s final archive.
Thomas had manipulated both men.
He encouraged Grant’s greed.
Encouraged Daniel’s paranoia.
When their partnership fractured, Thomas absorbed contracts from both sides.
Daniel disappeared.
Grant became financially dependent.
And Claire unknowingly commercialized technology whose ownership remained legally complicated.
Thomas benefited from every outcome.
Rachel said, “Why not eliminate Claire years ago?”
Sophie answered.
“Because Claire made the technology legitimate.”
Claire understood.
Her companies converted Daniel’s research into products used by millions.
She became the public face.
The clean owner.
The success story.
Thomas needed her alive.
Until she controlled the trust.
Then she became dangerous.
Claire asked, “Where is Thomas?”
Sophie looked at her.
“Seattle.”
“Why?”
“He arrived yesterday.”
Grant stood abruptly.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
“He wouldn’t come here.”
Sophie said, “He did.”
Grant shook his head.
“If Thomas is here, this is already bigger than the trust.”
“What does that mean?” Claire asked.
Grant paced.
“Thomas never appears personally unless he needs to control the ending.”
Claire thought about the airport.
The canceled trip.
The kidnapping.
The trust.
Everything had happened within twenty-four hours.
Not coincidence.
Pressure.
Thomas was forcing decisions.
Claire’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
An elderly man spoke.
“Claire Parker.”
She recognized the voice.
Thomas Vale.
“Thomas.”
“I’m disappointed we had to meet this way.”
“We haven’t met.”
“Oh, we have.”
Claire looked around.
“Where are you?”
“Close.”
Grant motioned for her to hang up.
Claire ignored him.
“What do you want?”
“Daniel’s key.”
“No.”
“Then the records.”
“No.”
Thomas chuckled.
“You inherited Daniel’s stubbornness without sharing his blood. Fascinating.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“What happens if I refuse?”
“You’ll spend years trying to distinguish criminals from allies.”
“I’ve had practice.”
Thomas laughed again.
Then his voice became colder.
“Ask Daniel why he selected you.”
Claire looked toward Daniel.
“What?”
“Ask him why a child unrelated to him became beneficiary of sixty-three million dollars.”
Claire stared at Daniel.
Thomas continued.
“Your father knows.”
Grant went pale.
“Don’t.”
Claire whispered, “Dad?”
Thomas said:
May you like
“Grant Parker isn’t your biological father.”
The call ended.
