Chapter 7 - The Empty Chair

Adrian ordered Emma back toward the stairs.
She refused to move.
The sound came again.
A slow scrape across concrete.
Jonah drew his service weapon and unlocked the steel door.
The underground room was larger than anyone expected.
Metal cabinets lined the walls. Computer monitors covered a long desk. Shelves held decades of financial records from the Vale Group, Hart Foundation, and several companies Adrian had never seen.
At the center of the room stood a chair.
It was empty.
A portable heater still glowed beside it.
Someone had been there minutes earlier.
Adrian crossed to the monitors.
One screen displayed a live feed from the hospital nursery.
Lily was visible inside her bassinet.
Emma rushed forward.
“Who has access to that camera?”
Jonah checked the network connection.
“It is not connected to the hospital system. Someone installed a separate device.”
Adrian called security.
Within seconds, the hospital team searched Lily’s room and discovered a tiny camera hidden inside a flower arrangement delivered that morning.
The card attached to the flowers bore Vivian’s name.
Vivian denied sending them.
Emma stared at the live feed until the screen went dark.
Caleb searched the cabinets.
“Adrian, you need to see this.”
He held a series of files labeled with dates.
Each contained information about women Adrian had dated before meeting Emma.
Their financial histories.
Medical records.
Private photographs.
Background investigations.
Emma’s file was six times larger than the others.
Inside were reports beginning when she was sixteen.
“They were watching me before I knew any of you,” she said.
Adrian turned toward Jonah.
“Who created these files?”
Jonah examined the paper.
“Different investigators. Different years. All paid through Grant’s firm.”
Emma found a photograph of herself at eighteen, standing outside her father’s office.
Richard Vale was visible inside the building.
On the back, someone had written:
Subject remains unaware of the agreement.
“What agreement?” Emma asked.
Adrian opened another cabinet.
It held copies of two contracts.
The first was signed by Thomas Hart and Richard Vale twenty-one years earlier.
It established a joint investment fund intended to merge their companies.
The second contract was a private succession agreement.
If either man died or became legally incapacitated, control of the combined assets would eventually pass to their children.
Adrian read the final clause.
“Emma and I were supposed to inherit together.”
Emma looked at him.
“Before we even met?”
The agreement did not require marriage. It simply made Adrian and Emma joint beneficiaries.
But another handwritten page had been attached.
The partnership will be secured through the next generation.
Emma looked toward Lily’s image on the now-dark monitor.
“They wanted our child.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
Richard and Thomas had created a financial alliance before Emma and Adrian were adults.
Grant had spent years tracking them.
When Adrian and Emma met by chance at a charity event, everyone assumed it was coincidence.
The files suggested otherwise.
Their invitations had been arranged by Grant’s office.
Their first business dinner had been scheduled through a foundation Thomas once controlled.
Even the table where they first spoke had been selected in advance.
“Our entire relationship was engineered,” Emma whispered.
Adrian moved in front of her.
“No.”
“The meeting was.”
“Yes.”
“The opportunities after that were.”
“Possibly.”
“Then how do we know anything was real?”
Adrian took her hand.
“Because they could arrange a room. They could not decide what I felt inside it.”
A printer activated behind them.
A single page emerged.
No one had touched the machine.
Jonah took the page.
It contained a photograph of Grant entering the hospital earlier that morning.
Beneath it was a message.
You opened the room too soon.
Now he knows you found the original agreement.
Leave before the house locks.
A heavy mechanism engaged overhead.
May you like
The steel door slammed shut.
The lights went out.
