Chapter 23 - DANIEL’S LAST BARGAIN

Daniel entered the federal conference room in handcuffs.

Elena had not seen him since the trial.

His hair was shorter. His face looked older. But when he saw her, he produced the same careful expression he had once used whenever he wanted forgiveness.

“You look well,” he said.

Elena sat beside Naomi.

“We’re not here to discuss me.”

Lydia sat across the table with her attorney.

Brianna remained behind Elena.

Daniel looked at his sister.

“You wore the dress again.”

“I wanted to remember the last day I believed you.”

Lydia slid a document across the table.

It described a final reserve account containing money not recorded in the verified ledger.

Two million dollars remained under the control of a nominee director.

Lydia would reveal the account in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Daniel laughed.

“There is no final reserve.”

“Yes, there is,” Lydia replied. “You created it after the wedding transfer.”

Daniel’s expression betrayed him.

Elena saw it.

So did Naomi.

The account contained the proceeds Daniel expected from the Westbridge sale. When the project collapsed, he moved what remained into a trust under another name.

“Whose name?” Elena asked.

Daniel did not answer.

Lydia did.

“Elena Vale.”

The room became silent.

Daniel had created a trust naming Elena as beneficiary.

He intended to use it as proof that she had profited from Westbridge if she ever reported him.

After his arrest, the money remained hidden because accessing it would expose the account.

“You were going to frame me,” Elena said.

“I was protecting myself.”

“You were destroying me.”

“I knew you would leave.”

“Then you knew what you were doing was wrong.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“I loved you.”

Elena looked at him without anger.

Love had been the word he used whenever he wanted his choices to become her responsibility.

“No,” she said. “You loved being believed.”

Naomi placed a waiver before him.

He could disclose the account voluntarily, or prosecutors could use Lydia’s evidence to seek additional charges.

Daniel looked toward Elena.

“Tell them I cooperated.”

“I won’t lie for you.”

“After everything we had?”

“What we had ended the first time you used my name without permission.”

Daniel signed.

The final account was frozen that afternoon.

The recovered money increased the victim fund by more than two million dollars.

When the meeting ended, Daniel called Elena’s name.

She paused at the door.

“Was any of it real?” he asked.

May you like

“My love was,” she replied. “That is why your betrayal mattered.”

Then she walked away before he could turn her honesty into another excuse.
