Chapter 15 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE PORTRAIT

The Mercer estate stood empty behind locked iron gates.
Federal agents entered first.
Elena, Brianna, and Naomi followed after the security team cleared the ground floor.
Furniture had been covered with white sheets. Dust softened the marble floors. The wedding flowers were long gone, but Elena could still remember where Daniel had grabbed her arm and where the silver tray had fallen.
She did not stop walking.
Brianna led them to Celeste’s former dressing room.
The portrait of Edmund Mercer still hung above the empty fireplace.
Behind it was the safe where Brianna had found the black ledger.
The safe door remained open.
Investigators had removed everything fourteen months earlier.
Brianna inserted the brass key into a narrow opening beside the frame.
A section of the wall released with a quiet click.
Behind it was a second door.
Naomi looked at her.
“You knew about this?”
“I knew my mother kept something here. I never knew how to open it until I found the key in a jewelry box.”
The hidden room was no larger than a closet.
Metal shelves covered three walls.
Most were empty.
On the floor sat a wooden document case bearing the Mercer family crest.
Inside were old trust agreements, property deeds, birth certificates, and letters dating back nearly fifty years.
Brianna lifted a folder with her name written across the front.
The document inside established a trust created by her grandfather.
Its original value was six million dollars.
The money was intended for Brianna’s education, future business, and personal independence.
She had never known it existed.
Attached amendments showed that Celeste had transferred control of the trust to herself after Edmund Mercer died.
Later transactions moved nearly all the money into Westbridge-related companies.
“My mother stole from me too,” Brianna said.
Elena placed a hand on her shoulder.
Naomi examined the signatures.
Several were supposedly Brianna’s.
They had been signed when she was nineteen.
“I was studying in Paris that year,” Brianna said. “I wasn’t even in the country.”
At the bottom of the case, Elena found a small photograph.
It showed Celeste, Marcus, Victor, and Lydia standing outside a bank in Zurich.
The photograph had been taken eight years earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
Account Six confirmed. Lydia retains access.
Naomi immediately called the financial-crimes division.
Before she finished speaking, the estate alarm activated.
Metal shutters began lowering over the windows.
The front doors locked automatically.
From somewhere inside the walls came the smell of smoke.
“They know we’re here,” Brianna whispered.
A speaker hidden in the ceiling crackled.

Then Lydia Crane’s voice filled the room.
“You should have left your mother’s secrets buried.”
