Chapter 5 - The Memory Card Under the Desk)

Grant did not insert the memory card into any device in the house.

Detective Patel had warned him not to.

At 1:17 a.m., a digital forensics technician arrived with a sealed evidence bag and a clean laptop. Grant watched as the card was copied bit by bit.

There were fourteen audio files.

No video.

The earliest recording was dated eight months before Mia's birthday.

The technician looked at Grant.

"Do you want Detective Patel present?"

"Yes."

Patel joined by secure call.

Grant put on headphones.

The first audio began with rustling fabric and Mia humming.

Then Camille's voice.

"You will take the pill."

Mia said, "It makes me sleepy."

"It's vitamins."

"Vitamins don't make me forget."

Grant stopped the recording.

He pulled the headphones off.

"What pill?"

Anna covered her mouth.

The technician did not react.

Patel's voice came through the speaker.

"Keep going if you can."

Grant put the headphones back on.

Camille again.

"Your father wants you to take it."

"No, he doesn't."

"Do you think he tells you everything?"

A pause.

Then Mia cried out.

"Ow!"

"Swallow it."

"I don't want it!"

A sound like a glass hitting a table.

Camille's voice became low.

"If you spit it out again, I'll tell your father you tried to hurt me."

The file ended.

Grant stood so abruptly the chair fell backward.

Anna began to cry.

"I saw the bottles," she said.

Grant turned.

"What bottles?"

"In the upstairs cabinet. Mrs. Harper said they were supplements."

"You never asked?"

"I did."

"And?"

"She told me if I questioned how she cared for Mia again, she'd fire me and report me for stealing."

Grant stared at her.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

Anna looked ashamed.

"I tried once."

"When?"

"The weekend you went to Denver."

Grant remembered a voicemail from Anna. Camille had told him Anna was upset over scheduling.

"I called you."

Grant felt sick.

"Camille deleted the message?"

Anna nodded.

"She took my phone that night. She said employees didn't get to create drama in her marriage."

Grant looked toward the sealed memory card.

"Why did you stay?"

Anna's answer came immediately.

"Because I couldn't leave Mia alone with her."

Grant sat down again.

The second recording was worse.

Camille and Dr. Pike were speaking in the upstairs sitting room.

Pike: "The dose is too high for her weight."

Camille: "Then lower it enough that she can function."

Pike: "You told me the goal was anxiety management."

Camille: "The goal is documented instability."

A silence.

Pike: "That isn't medicine."

Camille: "Don't become ethical now, Leonard."

Grant stopped the file.

Detective Patel said, "Mr. Harper, do not contact Pike."

Grant's hands shook.

"He's drugging my child."

"Potentially. We need the original prescription data and toxicology if anything remains in her system."

Grant stood.

"I'm taking her to the hospital."

"Good."

At 2:06 a.m., Mia was admitted through a private pediatric entrance.

Grant never left her side.

Blood was drawn. Urine was collected. A pediatrician examined the bruises. A social worker spoke gently to Mia. Because the suspected medication exposure might have been intermittent, nobody promised immediate answers.

At 4:40 a.m., Detective Torres arrived.

She carried a folder.

"We obtained an emergency preservation order for Dr. Pike's clinic records."

Grant looked up.

"And?"

"Someone attempted to delete Mia's file at 3:12 this morning."

"Who?"

"Remote login. We're tracing it."

Mia was asleep in the hospital bed.

Grant lowered his voice.

"Camille?"

"We don't know."

Torres glanced at the child.

"But whoever did it knew we would look."

Grant remembered Camille's small smile as she left the villa.

"She knew."

"Maybe."

"No. She knew."

Torres did not argue.

The third audio file on the memory card contained Charles.

He and Camille were arguing.

Charles: "Pike is becoming nervous."

Camille: "Then pay him."

Charles: "There are limits."

Camille: "There are forty-eight million reasons to extend them."

Grant stopped the recording.

Torres's face hardened.

"That helps."

Grant looked at her.

"Helps what?"

"Establish motive."

He almost said the money was not enough to explain it.

Then the fourth recording began.

Mia had captured it from inside her closet.

Camille's voice was muffled but recognizable.

"I didn't marry Grant for forty-eight million."

Charles answered, "Then what exactly are we still doing?"

Camille said, "Finishing what Laura interrupted."

Grant's breath stopped.

Charles: "Laura is dead."

Camille: "Her death wasn't the objective."

Charles: "Lower your voice."

Camille: "The company was."

Grant replayed the line.

The company was.

Harper Biomedical had grown from a regional medical device manufacturer into a global diagnostics company. Grant owned a controlling interest, but Laura's trust still held eighteen percent of voting shares for Mia.

Together, Grant and Mia effectively controlled the company.

If Mia were declared incapable and Grant were somehow removed—

Grant looked at Torres.

"This isn't about her inheritance."

Torres nodded slowly.

"What happens to your company if you die?"

Grant stared at her.

"My shares go into a family voting trust."

"Controlled by?"

He knew the answer before he said it.

"My spouse, until Mia turns twenty-five."

The room became silent.

Grant looked at his sleeping daughter.

Then at the memory card.

"What happens if both Mia and I are considered incapable?"

Torres did not answer.

She did not need to.

At 5:30 a.m., a nurse entered with preliminary toxicology.

Mia's blood contained traces of a sedative not prescribed to her.

Grant felt the world narrow.

The nurse continued.

"The level is low. It appears she hasn't received a full dose recently."

Mia opened her eyes.

"I stopped swallowing them."

Grant turned.

She looked frightened.

"I hid them under my tongue and spit them in the plant."

Grant leaned over her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I thought you gave them to her."

He shut his eyes.

Mia reached for his hand.

"Anna said maybe you didn't know."

Grant looked across the room at Anna.

She had saved his daughter in ways he had never understood.

Then Detective Torres's phone buzzed.

She read the message twice.

"What?"

Torres looked at Grant.

"We found Dr. Pike."

"Where?"

"In his clinic."

Grant waited.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

Relief barely had time to form.

May you like

Torres continued.

"He's unconscious."
