Chapter 12 - Charles Comes Back)

Charles Danner walked into a police station in Providence at 4:13 the next morning.
Alive.
Injured.
And carrying a gun he placed on the pavement before officers approached.
The blood in his car had been his.
He had cut his own arm and staged the airfield scene.
Grant learned this from Ross over the phone.
"He wanted Vale to think he was dead?"
"That's his claim."
"Why not go to police?"
"Because he says Vale has people inside law enforcement."
"Do you believe him?"
"We believe fear can contain truth and lies at the same time."
Charles requested federal protection.
In return, he offered documents.
Lots of them.
The first proved Northbridge Advisory was a laundering vehicle for payments related to Sparrow.
The second showed Charles had altered Laura's trust amendments.
The third was worse.
It was a chronology titled Family Stability Plan.
Year 1: reinforce grief narrative.
Year 2: introduce replacement attachment.
Year 3: establish behavioral concerns in minor.
Year 4: consolidate medical and legal documentation.
Trigger event: G.H. incapacity, death, or removal.
Result: spousal control pending guardianship review.
Grant read the page twice.
"Replacement attachment."
Ross looked uncomfortable.
"Camille."
Grant felt nauseated.
Their marriage had been a line item.
A phase.
A strategy.
"Did she know this whole plan?"
"Charles says she knew parts."
"She married me because a document told her to."
"Grant—"
"No. I need to say it correctly."
He pushed the paper away.
"I brought a woman into my daughter's home because I thought I had found a second chance. She was a step in a plan."
Ross let the silence sit.
Then he placed another document down.
Charles had kept insurance.
Copies of messages from Vale.
One message, dated the week before Mia's birthday, said:
If C cannot stabilize M, remove C from field and initiate clinical route.
Grant's eyes narrowed.
"Clinical route."
"We asked Charles."
"And?"
"He says he doesn't know."
"He's lying."
"Probably about some things."
Grant looked at the message.
"Remove Camille from field."
Ross nodded.
"She may have become expendable."
Grant felt no sympathy.
But he understood why she had been frightened of something beyond jail.
Charles also claimed Vale had never cared primarily about the trust money.
The trust provided leverage.
Harper Biomedical was the real target.
Specifically, its archival data and current diagnostic infrastructure.
"Why?" Grant asked.
"Charles says Vale believes the company owes him."
"Because my father used him?"
"Because your father betrayed him."
Grant frowned.
According to Charles, Martin Vale helped suppress the original Sparrow failure. In exchange, Thomas Harper promised him a permanent financial interest in future technology developed from the program.
Later, Thomas cut him out.
Vale kept copies of everything.
For years, he used those records to extort money from people connected to the concealment.
Then Laura found S-09.
"What happened when she found the child?" Grant asked.
"Charles says that's when Vale became afraid."
"Why?"
"Because S-09 wasn't simply evidence of a failed scan."
Grant waited.
Ross looked at his notes.
"Charles claims the participant's family had been paid to disappear after the study. But Laura found the participant living under a different name."
"Still not unusual if there was a settlement."
"Except the participant had been enrolled in additional studies."
Grant stared at him.
"By Harper Biomedical?"
"Not officially."
"By Vale?"
"Possibly."
"Studies of what?"
"We don't know yet."
Grant stood and walked to the window.
Below, Mia was playing in Evelyn's garden with Anna.
She was laughing.
A real laugh.
Grant had not realized how long it had been since he heard it.
Ross joined him.
"Charles says Vale's phrase 'Sparrow never ended' refers to a private research network that continued collecting data after the original project."
"On children?"
"Initially."
"And now?"
"We don't know."
Grant looked at him.
"You keep saying that."
"Because there are things we don't know."
"Then what do you know?"
Ross's face became serious.
"We know Vale was near Mia's school. We know he directed Camille to discredit her. We know he wanted Laura's evidence. We know Charles believed Vale would kill him for leaving."
Grant's gaze hardened.
"So my daughter stays protected."
"Yes."
"School?"
"Remote for now."
"Travel?"
"Limited."
"House?"
"Security review."
Grant nodded.
Then Ross handed him one final page.
Charles had drawn a location from memory.
A warehouse outside Briar Glen.
Vale had used it for meetings.
Federal agents raided it that afternoon.
It was empty.
Almost.
They found burned files, dismantled hard drives, medical storage cabinets, and a wall covered in photographs.
Twenty-three photographs were old.
Children.
Sparrow participants.
The twenty-fourth was recent.
Mia.
Pinned beneath her photograph was a handwritten note.
L.H. REPEATED THE ERROR.
Grant stared at it.
"What error?"
Ross said, "We don't know."
Grant looked at the initials.
Laura Harper.
Repeated the error.
Then he noticed something in the evidence photo.
On the wall beside Mia's picture was another photograph partly hidden by the frame.
A woman.
Grant pointed.
"Zoom in."
Ross enlarged it.
The image pixelated, then sharpened.
Grant did not recognize the woman.
But Evelyn, standing behind him, made a sound.
Grant turned.
"You know her?"
Evelyn's face had gone white.
"Yes."
"Who is she?"
Evelyn sat down slowly.
"Her name is Rebecca Vale."
"Vale?"
Evelyn nodded.
"Martin's daughter."
Grant looked back at the photo.
May you like
"Why would Laura have known her?"
Evelyn whispered, "Because Rebecca was S-09."
