STAY ALIVE EIGHT MINUTES / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Gala

The Hartwell Foundation Gala took place inside the Grand Meridian Hotel on a cold September evening.

More than six hundred guests attended.

Politicians, surgeons, investors and reporters gathered beneath crystal chandeliers while a string quartet played near the ballroom entrance.

Adrian stood beside Lena throughout the reception.

To everyone watching, they appeared perfectly matched.

He wore an all-black suit tailored precisely to his frame. Lena wore a pale-blue floral dress, diamond earrings and the bracelet her father had given her when she graduated from college.

Cameras followed them across the ballroom.

Adrian kept one hand near the center of Lena’s back.

The touch looked affectionate.

It also allowed him to guide her wherever he wanted.

“Smile,” he whispered as they approached the photographers.

Lena smiled.

The restructuring vote was scheduled for the following morning.

Adrian expected her to approve the agreement transferring Hartwell’s debt into shares controlled by Vale Capital.

He believed the board had already been secured.

He believed Lena had stopped asking questions.

He believed the documents hidden in his private office would remain hidden.

At nine fifteen, Lena received a message from Margaret.

Daniel has access. Fifteen-minute window.

Lena turned toward Adrian.

“I need to fix my makeup.”

“You look beautiful.”

“I’ll be five minutes.”

“I’ll come with you.”

“To the bathroom?”

He smiled.

“I’ll wait outside.”

Lena’s heart tightened.

They crossed the ballroom together.

Near the corridor, one of Hartwell’s senior surgeons approached Adrian with a question about the next morning’s vote. The interruption was not accidental.

Vincent had arranged it.

Lena continued walking.

Instead of entering the restroom, she stepped through a service door and followed a hotel employee staircase to the private business level above the ballroom.

Daniel Cho waited near an emergency exit.

“You have ten minutes,” he said.

He handed her an access card.

Adrian maintained a temporary office in the hotel for private meetings with investors. The room contained a desk, two chairs and a locked case holding his business laptop.

Daniel entered a security code.

The case opened.

Lena connected an encrypted drive and began copying the files.

Six minutes remained.

Folders appeared one after another.

Hartwell transfer schedules.

Board payment agreements.

Private messages between Adrian and Malcolm Reese.

A document titled Contingency L.H. attracted her attention.

She opened it.

The file contained medical notes, photographs of prescription bottles and a prepared legal petition declaring Lena mentally incapable of managing her trust.

The petition included statements from a psychiatrist Lena had never met.

Adrian planned to have her declared incompetent if she rejected the restructuring deal.

Her father’s requirement that she remain actively informed would then become the weapon used to remove her.

The document also contained instructions for controlling the public story.

Recent widow suffers emotional decline.

Husband steps in to protect family company.

Lena felt physically cold.

Adrian had built two paths toward Hartwell.

If she cooperated, he would use her vote.

If she resisted, he would erase her credibility.

A message appeared on her phone.

Adrian: Where are you?

She looked at the transfer progress.

Eighty-three percent.

Another message arrived.

Adrian: The bathroom attendant says you aren’t there.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“He knows.”

Ninety-one percent.

Footsteps sounded beyond the office door.

Daniel removed the access card.

“We need to go.”

“Ninety-six.”

The handle moved.

“Lena.”

Adrian’s voice came from the hallway.

The transfer reached one hundred percent.

Daniel pulled the drive free.

They escaped through the emergency exit as the office door opened behind them.

Daniel ran down the stairs toward the service level.

Lena entered a corridor leading back to the ballroom.

Adrian caught up with her near the elevators.

He did not raise his voice.

“What were you doing upstairs?”

“I got lost.”

“You used a restricted elevator.”

“I followed a sign.”

“Where is Daniel Cho?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian looked at her handbag.

The drive was hidden inside the lining.

“Give me your phone.”

“Why?”

“Because I asked.”

Two guests stepped out of the elevator.

Adrian immediately smiled and greeted them.

Lena understood that the crowd protected her.

For now.

She linked her arm through his.

“People are waiting for us.”

They returned to the ballroom together.

Adrian delivered his speech at ten o’clock.

He spoke about Thomas Hart’s vision, Lena’s courage and their shared commitment to medical innovation.

The audience applauded.

Lena stood beside the stage and watched the man who had planned her public destruction praise her strength.

When Adrian invited her to join him, she walked beneath the lights.

He handed her the microphone.

“Would you like to say a few words?”

The question was a test.

Lena looked across the ballroom.

Margaret stood near the back.

Daniel had disappeared.

Vincent Moretti sat alone at a distant table, watching her.

Lena smiled.

“My father believed a company’s character is revealed by what it protects when no one is watching.”

Adrian’s expression changed slightly.

Lena continued.

“Tomorrow, Hartwell’s board will make a decision that shapes the company’s future. I hope every person involved remembers that numbers can be corrected, buildings can be replaced and reputations can be rebuilt.”

She turned toward Adrian.

“But trust, once deliberately destroyed, cannot be negotiated back into existence.”

The ballroom became silent.

Adrian took the microphone.

“Beautifully said.”

He placed an arm around her.

The guests applauded uncertainly.

Near midnight, Adrian guided Lena into their private car.

He waited until the doors closed.

Then he looked at her.

“What did you take from my office?”

Lena watched the hotel lights disappear behind them.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

May you like

Adrian leaned back.

For the first time, he stopped pretending to believe her.
