Chapter 10 - The Door She Chose

Three years after the night in the bathroom, Lena returned to the forty-third floor of Vale Tower.

The apartment had remained under court control during the investigation. After Adrian’s conviction, ownership transferred to Lena as part of the restitution judgment.

She could have sold it immediately.

Instead, she waited until she was ready to enter.

Margaret came with her.

The elevator opened directly into the living room.

Most of the furniture had been removed. Dust covered the floor where the dining table once stood. The city remained unchanged beyond the windows, beautiful and indifferent.

Lena walked through the apartment slowly.

She passed Adrian’s former office.

The guest-room closet.

The kitchen counter where he had placed her hidden laptop.

Finally, she reached the bathroom.

The damaged door had been replaced.

She stood in the doorway but did not enter.

“Do you want me to stay?” Margaret asked.

“Yes.”

They remained there together.

Lena had imagined the room many times since the trial. In memory, the walls always seemed darker and the space smaller.

Now it was simply a room.

Cold marble.

Empty cabinets.

A sealed window.

A place where something terrible had almost happened and something powerful had begun.
